Let me give you an anecdote. We moved away for five year. When moving back, the reason we chose Los Altos is because of De Martini. Going there since 1999 and love the place.

They always have produce, some of the best in the area. All year around, they have good stuff at a good price.

I think they are wonderful. They have the ability to provide local fresh food. I have never brought home anything from their store with disappointment. They always have great things year round and I find myself not really wanting to shop anywhere else, and if I do it's minimal.

I think the fruits are the best thing about them.

“We value the importance of supporting our community and creating a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Comparative Summary

Most grocery stores buy produce in large quantities to save money, but DeMartini Orchard only buys what it can sell on a given day. Owners Craig and Tony Kozy took this approach when they opened their Los Altos produce store in 1984, and the brothers have been providing Silicon Valley customers with fresh, locally-grown fruits and vegetables ever since.

Finding fresh produce every day is one of DeMartini Orchard’s biggest and most important missions, says Craig Kozy. The company relies on its ongoing, long-term relationships with a network of local growers who supply a wide range of organic and conventional produce. In fact, for one buyer employed by DeMartini Orchard, the search for the freshest products begins every midnight in the markets of San Francisco.

Instead of asking customers to trust their claims to freshness, the Kozy brothers invite them to test products for themselves. According to Mr. Kozy, DeMartini Orchard is one of the only local markets that offers every one of its fruit items to sample.

The physical structure of DeMartini Orchard–what Mr. Kozy calls a “quirky old building”–is also unique. He says customers visiting for the first time are typically delighted by the artful display of products and the “beauty of everything.” Through abundant weekly specials and promotions, the Kozy brothers strive to keep prices as competitive as possible without compromising product quality. DeMartini Orchard also carries dairy products, cheese, bread, and fresh squeezed orange juice. The company is also an avid supporter of its local community. Whether they’re providing job experience for area students or donating to an upcoming fundraiser, the Kozy brothers take pleasure in supporting schools, houses of worship and charitable organizations.

Industry Info

Remember what your parents told you about eating your fruits and vegetables. A growing body of research shows that fruits and vegetables are critical to promoting good health. To get the amount recommended, most people need to increase the amount of fruits and vegetables they currently eat every day.

Many essential vitamins and minerals can be found in fruits and vegetables. Data overwhelmingly shows that people who eat lots of both as part of a healthful diet have less chronic diseases, including stroke and other cardiovascular ailments, and certain cancers.

Moreover, people worldwide are rediscovering the benefits of buying locally-grown produce. Because it’s fresher than anything in the supermarket, it’s often tastier and more nutritious. It’s also good for local economies, since buying locally grown food helps family farmers stay in business.

Food travels an average distance of 1,500 miles from farm to plate. Flown or trucked in from Florida, Chile or Holland, much of it can be quite old by the time it arrives at its final destination. In that week-long (or more) delay from harvest to dinner table, sugars turn to starches, plant cells shrink, and produce loses its vitality. In fact, studies show that imported produce that’s been sitting on a truck or shelf for a week loses its nutrients so quickly that food that’s frozen or canned soon after harvest is actually more nutritious.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM James Kozy

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

James Kozy: Staying Fresh

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

LOS ALTOS — James Kozy spent much of his childhood hanging around his father’s produce market—mostly wreaking small-scale havoc, by his account. It wasn’t until later in life that he learned what it truly meant to reap the fruits of one’s labors…in his case, quite literally. “My dad, Craig, started this business in 1985, so I was pretty much born into it,” he recounts. “As a little kid, I used to hang around the market, just messing around and scaring the register girls. When I got a little older, my dad started having me trim corn in the back, and things progressed from there. Later, while attending San Francisco State University, I worked at a Whole Foods Market, where I was exposed to another side of the produce industry. After college, I returned home and started working for my dad’s business full time.”

Today, as manager of De Martini Orchard, James appreciates the opportunity to apply his college education to his family’s business. “As a communications major, I’ve enjoyed taking over the marketing here, which includes handling our social media accounts and print ads, among other things.” However, at the end of the day, James says his favorite part of his job is interacting with the market’s customers. “Sometimes people come in and are unsure of what they should buy or what’s in season, so I enjoy educating them and passing on the knowledge about what we do.”

A resident of Sunnyvale, James deems the Bay Area an ideal location for someone in his line of work—and anyone who loves fresh produce, for that matter. “California is basically in the heartland of the produce industry,” he says. “The diversity of the fruits and vegetables we have here is pretty amazing. I’ll get customers visiting from the East Coast who are totally blown away by all the items we have that they’ve never seen before.”

Outside of work, James spends the bulk of his time engaged in outdoor activities. “I really like going camping and mountain biking, and lately I’ve been getting into rock climbing,” he affirms. “Locally, I like spending time at the Castle Rock Regional Recreation Area, but when I get a chance, I love going down to Joshua Tree National Park.” Considering his profession, it’s no surprise that James also enjoys cooking at home. “With all the great foods we have around here, it’s fun to bring stuff home and tinker around in the kitchen, seeing what works and what doesn’t.”

In his life and career, James espouses a simple yet relevant philosophy. “Stay fresh,” he says. “The world is constantly evolving, so it’s important to stay current with the times. I’m always looking for the next big thing, particularly if it’s something that will enrich my life and the lives of others.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite fruit?
A: Depending on the time of year, either a plum or a mango.

Q: What’s your favorite sports team?
A: The San Jose Sharks.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: South America.

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: Hanamaru in Sunnyvale.

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: Broken-down bicycles. I like to tinker with them, take them apart and put them back together.

  • The Benefits of Buying Local Produce

LOS ALTOS — When it comes to selecting produce, one simple principle can optimize your eating experience: Buy local. Since local produce is always in season, it’s fresher and tastes better. Consumers tend to assume that most produce items are available year-round, but this is only because they’re imported from all over the world. The reality is, produce that sits in cold storage while being shipped from another part of the world simply can’t match the taste of produce sourced from a local farm.

Another reason to eat local is it decreases your carbon footprint. When you buy imported produce, you have to consider the resources and energy expended to ship it from another part of the world (not to mention the pollution). In contrast, when you buy locally sourced produce, the impact your purchase has on the environment is substantially lowered. Plus, the money you spend goes to local growers and grocers rather than importers and foreign markets.

Considering that we live in California, one of the great food producers of the United States, isn’t it time you took advantage of the bountiful supply and variety we have right in our own backyard?

  • Video: Benefits of Eating Local Produce

    Complete Video Transcription

LOS ALTOS — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you want to enjoy the freshest produce, support local commerce and shrink your carbon footprint at the same time, it’s time to start eating local. Today we’re in Los Altos with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor James Kozy of De Martini Orchard to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, James Kozy: So, yeah, you want to eat as locally as fresh as possible. You always want to eat things that are in season. In summertime, you have your soft fruit: your peaches, nectarines, cherries. In wintertime, you have things such as your hard squash, your butternut squash, your spaghetti squash, and citrus, like mandarin and oranges. In the fall time, you start getting your apples and pears. You always want to eat what’s in season. Because that way you’re not having to import it from other countries or other areas, increasing your carbon footprint.

Also, eating what’s in season and fresh helps things taste better. Things are always going to taste better when they’re fresh. The fresher they are, the crisper, the juicier, the sweeter they’re always going to be. They’re not having to sit around in cold storage for days on end. You always want to eat what’s around you, what is indigenous to the area. You don’t want things having to be imported from, you know, let’s say, from out of state. Things coming from across seas, you also – a lot of things don’t grow in California but are available all year long.

Host, Sarah Rutan: To learn more from local top-rated companies, visit our Diamond Certified Expert Reports at experts.diamondcertified.info.

I post about it on social media all the time. I am a private chef and I only work with their produce. I had an event in Los Angeles and I drove instead of flying because I had to bring my produce with me.

The effort they put into bringing absolute fresh produce all the time, and they handle the produce beautifully which can make or break it.
