Herb’s Pool Service, Inc. provides a full range of swimming pool and spa services for residential clients in Marin, Sonoma, and West Contra Costa Counties. In addition to handling everything from regular cleaning and maintenance to new pool construction, the company has the capabilities to remodel existing pools and spas; perform interior refinishing; install pumps, filters and heaters; and more.

Co-owner Sandy Scott says that even though Herb’s Pool Service prioritizes staying current with industry innovations, it hasn’t lost sight of the importance of the personal touch. “Like most industries, pool service has changed significantly over the years, so keeping up-to-date with new technology is critical. However, we also believe that no amount of technological sophistication can take the place of old-fashioned customer service. Our customers can expect to receive both.”

Herb’s Pool Service maintains two retail stores in San Rafael and Petaluma where customers can purchase the latest pool equipment, chemicals, and accessories. The company also builds and maintains waterfalls and other ornamental water features, and it’s able to perform warranty work for all major pool equipment manufacturers.

Comparative Summary

Few swimming pool and spa service companies earn the prestigious Diamond Certified award, which means they’ve been independently rated Highest in Quality. Even fewer can also claim more than 50 years in the industry, but that’s exactly the case for Herb’s Pool Service. “We’ve been family-owned and operated since 1958, and we’ve been providing the same versatile, high-quality services the entire time,” says co-owner Kathy Thompson. “Our customers know they can count on us to be there whenever they need help, and they really appreciate that.”

In addition to handling everything from regular cleaning and maintenance to new pool construction, the company has the capabilities to install pumps, heaters and filters; remodel existing pools and spas; build and maintain ornamental water features; and more.

Unlike less experienced pool service companies that use outdated technology and equipment in an effort to reduce their operating costs, Herb’s Pool Service prides itself on staying up-to-date with ongoing industry innovations. “When it comes to energy-efficient pool equipment, for example, a lot of companies aren’t familiar with some of the latest products, but we implement them whenever possible,” says Ms. Thompson. “Our training, expertise and capabilities give us an important edge.”

To further differentiate itself from its competition, Herb’s Pool Service maintains two retail locations in San Rafael and Petaluma so customers can come in to have their questions answered and peruse the latest pool products and accessories. “Our friendly staff members are very knowledgeable and happy to give information and advice,” adds co-owner Tina Offenbach. “We also offer free onsite water testing at both of our retail stores. Everything we do is meant to maximize convenience for our customers.”

Industry Info

When it comes to keeping your pool clean, remember that there’s such a thing as too much chlorine. Adding chlorine to your pool is one of the most important ways to keep it sanitary and free of moss and fungi, but you need to be careful about the amount you use. Not only can an excessive amount of chlorine make the water uncomfortable for swimmers, it can also cause health problems for both swimmers and the pool itself.

While the recommended amount of chlorine in a swimming pool is between one and three parts per million (ppm), it’s not uncommon to find pools with chlorine levels up to 10ppm. To make sure your pool’s chemistry is correct, have a pool maintenance professional test its pH and chlorine levels. If your pool has a correctly proportioned chemical balance, it’ll be significantly more comfortable for swimmers, easier on the skin and eyes, and devoid of a potent chlorine scent.

One of the most common ways a pool can get overdosed with chlorine is improper application methods. A floating chlorinator or mechanized dispenser will consistently and proportionately mete out chlorine throughout the day, but if you opt for putting chlorine tablets in your pool’s skimmer, it can result in uneven distribution.

If you’re interested in alternatives to traditional chlorine, recent industry innovations have given way to a variety of options. Here’s some information about three of the most common alternatives:

Bromine
A member of the same chemical family as chlorine, bromine uses a similar process of oxidation to kill bacterial microorganisms. Since its effects tend to last longer in high temperatures, it’s ideal to use in hot tubs and spas.

Saltwater chlorination
Another popular alternative sanitizer is saltwater chlorination, which generates chlorine by a process of electrolysis, resulting in reduced chemical potency. This method of chlorination also offers a smooth, even distribution, doing away with the “spiking” of chlorine levels that can occur when manually added.

Mineral sanitizers
While oxidizers like bromine and chlorine are known for their effectiveness, people who have sensitivities to high levels of these chemicals may benefit from mineral sanitizers. While not an independent sanitation solution, the application of minerals will allow you to run your spa with a lower level of chemical input, which will create a milder environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can you build me a new pool?

A: Yes. We’re licensed pool contractors, so we can build a new pool or remodel an existing pool on your property.

Q: Do you sell products that increase pool safety?

A: Yes, we carry a variety of products that enhance the safety of pools, including covers, fences and gate alarms.

Q: Do I need to get my pool serviced during the winter?

A: Yes, most pools need to be serviced weekly during the winter, and some even need more attention in colder months, depending on the location and weather. For example, if you get a lot of runoff or debris in your pool during the rainy season, you should take care of that as soon as possible. A pool’s chemicals don’t fluctuate as much in the winter because of reduced usage, but the chemicals still need to be routinely tested and adjusted.

Q: How much evaporation is normal for a pool?

A: If your pool is uncovered, you can expect one to two inches of water to evaporate per week. There are also additional factors that can affect the rate of evaporation—if it’s really windy out, for example, you’re going to lose a bit more water. We can perform tests to determine if your pool has a leak or if it’s just normal evaporation.

Q: Can you test my pool water?

A: Yes, we can perform a free water analysis in our onsite testing lab. All we need is a two-cup sample of your pool water and we can have the results very quickly.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Tim Lindelli

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Tim Lindelli: Family Ties

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN RAFAEL — As a third-generation employee at his family’s business, Tim Lindelli’s roots in the swimming pool industry go deeper than most. “My grandfather started Herb’s Pool Service about 58 years ago, and it’s been a family business ever since,” he says. “I started helping out during the summers as a kid, whether at the shop or on different jobsites, and following high school it just seemed natural for me to work here full-time and learn about other aspects of the business.” After 18 years, Tim says he continues to enjoy working alongside his family. “I’ve had friends who’ve worked for their family businesses, and most of them talked about how hard it was, but my own experience has been really positive. We don’t have any problems working together; rather, it actually brings us closer together, so I guess I’m pretty fortunate.”

As project manager for Herb’s Pool Service, Tim says he enjoys the process of working with customers to achieve their visions for their swimming pools. “I like going out to people’s homes, talking with them to get a feeling of what they’re looking for and then building the perfect pools for them. I love seeing how happy our customers are with the end results of our work.”

A lifetime North Bay resident, Tim grew up in Novato before later settling in Petaluma, where he lives today with his wife, Cindy, and their two daughters, Kayley and Ashley. “Both of my daughters are very involved in dance, so my wife and I spend a lot of time driving them to rehearsals and attending recitals,” he says. In his free time, Tim enjoys outdoor activities like golfing at the Petaluma Golf and Country Club and boating with friends and family at Lake Shasta.

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Tim says he’d take a long vacation. “I’d probably take my family on a trip and go visit some places we’ve never seen. We’ve been to a few of the tropical islands, but other than that, we haven’t gone too far outside of the United States, so we’d start checking some of those destinations off the list.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite sports team?
A: The San Francisco 49ers.

Q: What’s your favorite restaurant?
A: Cucina Paradiso in Petaluma.

Q: What’s your earliest memory?
A: As a kid growing up in Novato, there was this big hill near my house. My mom used to bring home cardboard boxes from pool filters and we’d use them to slide down the hill, which was always a lot of fun.

Q: Have you ever had a conversation with a famous person?
A: Working in the pool business in Marin, I’ve had the opportunity to meet quite a few famous people. One in particular who stands out is Chris Isaac, just because he seemed like such a nice, down-to-earth guy when I talked with him.

Q: What was your favorite TV show when you were growing up?
A: “The Dukes of Hazzard.”

Q: What’s your favorite dessert?
A: Crème brûlée.

  • Planning Ahead for a New Swimming Pool

SAN RAFAEL — When a homeowner decides to install a swimming pool, the goal is typically for it to be ready in time for the upcoming summer season. However, many people fail to realize that building a new pool is a lengthy process, which is why it’s necessary to plan several months in advance to meet your summer deadline.

The construction of a new swimming pool entails many phases, from the initial design and engineering to obtaining building permits to the construction itself. The permit process alone can take several weeks and potentially hold up the entire project. Add to that allowances for unexpected issues and it’s easy to see just how time-intensive a pool project can be.

If you want to ensure your pool is ready for the summer, contact a pool contractor no later than the beginning of the year. By getting the ball rolling in January, you’ll be sitting cool in your new pool by June.

    Complete Video Transcription

SAN RAFAEL — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re planning on installing a pool, you’ll want to be sure to plan right so that you’re swimming by summer. Today, we’re in San Rafael with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Tim Lindelli of Herb’s Pool Service, Inc. to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Tim Lindelli: So, if you’re thinking about building a swimming pool, one thing to think about would be to plan ahead. If you can start planning in December, that gives plenty of time for the design process, the permit process, which can take up to six weeks. So, that way you can realistically be swimming by June.

If you were to decide to move forward with the project in April, realistically, you’re probably looking at late July by the time you’re swimming.
