Comparative Summary

Scudder Roofing Company offers custom reroofing and general roof repair services to residential and commercial clients throughout the Monterey Peninsula. In addition to shake, shingle, tile and sheet metal roofing, the company provides solar panels and roofing systems, foundational waterproofing, siding and retrofit windows.

Pete Scudder founded Scudder Roofing Company in 1982 to put roofs over people’s heads and provide them with enjoyable construction experiences at the same time. Mr. Scudder says he facilitates his customers’ experiences by hiring, training and retaining the best teams possible. “We have a strict policy on how we train our people, both the teams in the field and the management staff in the office. Each year, we set out a vision of what we’re going to accomplish for our clientele, and we all rally behind it.”

On average, Scudder Roofing Company’s installation teams have been with the firm for 14 years, and Mr. Scudder says they turn their experience into value and quality for every customer. “We build long-term relationships with our employees. In this industry, the typical turnaround time is two to three years. We’re well beyond that.”

When a job is complete, Scudder Roofing Company conducts a thorough inspection with the client, foreman, outside superintendent and safety superintendent to ensure the work exceeds everyone’s expectations. “Almost 90 percent of our work is from repeats or referrals,” says Mr. Scudder. “We’re very proud of that. We’re not just roofing contractors; we protect people’s homes, which are often their most cherished investments. Our objective is to make the roofing process a great experience.”

Industry Info

When hiring a roofing contractor, put away preconceived notions and focus on informed research. “Unfortunately, our industry doesn’t have the best reputation,” says Pete Scudder, owner of Scudder Roofing Company in Marina. “I think contractors are second after car dealers in the number of customer complaints received.”

The National Roofing Contractors Association has compiled a list of questions and guidelines to use when hiring a roofing contractor, from asking for license numbers to knowing what to look for in a proposal. You can find the list at www.scudderroofing.com/how_to_choose_roofing_contractor.htm.

Mr. Scudder points out a few items that are potentially more important than others but that homeowners often forget to consider. “Make sure the people working on your home are actually employees, not subcontractors,” he says. “If they’re not employees, they may not be covered by insurance, which makes you liable if they’re injured on the job.” Mr. Scudder also advises to check with vendors that provide the materials to ensure the contractor is certified to install that particular product. “Sometimes the contractor will fail to pay the vendor, and the homeowner discovers the vendor has placed a lien on the house. Make sure you get proper lien releases from the vendors.”

Despite these setbacks, the roofing industry is seeing a Green revolution. “We’re really excited about the Greening of our industry,” says Mr. Scudder. “It’s not just about solar power. More and more roofing products are recyclable and manufactured using sustainable processes. When we tear off a roof, that demolition material is recycled instead of going into a landfill.” California has also adopted laws mandating the use of reflective roofing materials, which reflect the sun’s energy instead of absorbing it and creating more work for air conditioning systems. “These materials were originally used on commercial buildings,” says Mr. Scudder, “but now they’re making their way onto residential roofs. It’s a great trend.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What should I look for in a roofing contractor?

A: A lot of basic questions are answered by Diamond Certified’s website. Its screening process only allows the very best firms through. On our website, we also provide a comprehensive list of questions—drawn up by the National Roofing Contractors Association—that you should ask of any contractor. It covers basic questions about licenses and insurance and gives tips on what to look for in a proposal.

Q: Will I have the same foreman throughout my project?

A: Yes. We hold a pre-construction meeting and our estimator will introduce you to the foreman, supervisor and safety coordinator. That team will stay in place throughout your project. We’ll give you the foreman’s cell phone number and encourage you to call him whenever you have a question or concern.

Q: What’s Duro-Last roofing?

A: Duro-Last is a prefabricated, reinforced, thermoplastic membrane roofing material designed for flat or low-sloped roofs—primarily commercial and industrial buildings. It’s durable; easy to install; leak-proof; resistant to chemicals, fire and high winds; and virtually maintenance-free. More than one billion square feet of Duro-Last membrane have been installed throughout North America since 1978.

Q: How much roof area do I need for a solar system?

A: You need about 100 square feet of surface area per kilowatt of generating capacity (one kilowatt is generally the smallest we install). A typical home system of four kilowatts would require 400 square feet of roof area with good southern exposure. How much power you need will depend on your particular energy requirements.

Q: What kinds of rebates are available for solar panels?

A: The state of California provides a $2,500 cash rebate for each kilowatt—that’s $10,000 for a typical four-kilowatt system. There’s also a federal tax credit of $2,000 for home solar systems.

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Pete Scudder: Outdoor Education

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

MONTEREY – While he initially got into roofing as a means to supplement his academic career, Pete Scudder soon grew to prefer his outdoor learning environment to the confines of the classroom. “While attending Monterey Peninsula College, I worked part time for a local roofing company,” he remembers. “For about a year, I worked during the day and went to school at night, until eventually I realized that I really enjoyed working a trade and being outside all day.” Shifting his focus toward a full-time career in roofing, Pete entered an apprenticeship program for shingling and subsequently obtained his license. After spending several years refining his skills at various roofing firms, he struck out on his own and founded Scudder Roofing Company in 1982.

Today, after more than three decades in business, Pete says one of his favorite aspects of his job is interacting with people. “I enjoy working together with good customers and good colleagues. We have a great community that supports us, and I’ve had the pleasure of meeting a lot of fine people through this industry.”

Since relocating from his hometown of Walnut Creek to attend college, Pete has remained on the Monterey Peninsula, where he lives with his wife, Karen. Referencing his close proximity to Monterey Bay, he says there’s much to appreciate within his adopted locale. “There’s a lot to do here, including great community events and plenty of outdoor activities. Whether you want to go hiking, do some wine tasting or just lay on the beach, we have it all.”

Outside of work, Pete engages in a variety of pastimes, from hiking and cycling to fishing and cooking. In addition to these personal hobbies, he makes it a point to stay active in his local community. “I’m involved with Voices for Children through CASA, as well as the Boy Scouts and the Marina Rotary Foundation,” he says. “A major goal of these groups is to help disadvantaged youth by pairing them with good mentors and guiding them toward opportunities that lead to a better life. It’s very rewarding to be a part of that.”

In his life and career, Pete believes a willingness to listen to others is a critical ingredient of success. “The best advice I can give is to be patient and listen well,” he affirms. “By heeding the input of customers and colleagues alike, you can learn new ways to improve your business and provide a better all-around service.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Pete says he’d get to work on a laundry list of maintenance items. “I have a few things I’d like to get accomplished around the house, but once I get caught up, I might consider taking off to Europe for a month or so!”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite holiday?
A: Thanksgiving, because it’s all about family and isn’t quite as commercial as some of the other holidays.

Q: What was your first concert?
A: In 1973, I saw Elton John at the Cow Palace in Daly City.

Q: Pancakes or waffles?
A: Pancakes.

Q: If you could drive any car, what would it be?
A: A Porsche 911 Carrera S.

Q: Music or talk radio?
A: It depends. I usually listen to talk radio when I’m driving around for work and music when I’m at home on the weekend.

  • How to Prepare for a Re-Roofing Project

MONTEREY — A residential re-roofing project is no walk in the park—in fact, it can be tantamount to experiencing a mild earthquake. For this reason, it’s important to consider several aspects when preparing for a re-roofing project.

Ensure the safety of your children and pets. The presence of workers on your roof can cause a lot of noise and vibrations, which is why many homeowners opt to stay at hotels and check their pets into kennels for the duration of their re-roofing projects. If you decide to stay at home during the job, warn your children to be careful and avoid work areas where there may be falling debris. Also, it’s a good idea to collaborate with your contractor to make the jobsite as safe as possible for all parties.

Make sure your indoor and outdoor possessions are protected. Put away or stabilize fragile items that are hanging on walls, as vibrations from the work can cause these to fall. Likewise, items stored in your attic or garage should be covered or removed to avoid being damaged by falling debris.

Consider the presence of dust. Due to the intensive nature of re-roofing, dust can be an issue if it’s not adequately addressed. If your home has open-beam or cathedral-style ceilings, it may be particularly vulnerable to vibrations, which can result in additional dust and falling debris. In this case, make sure your contractor adequately covers your home’s interior in order to minimize the clean-up afterward.

Overall, the most important aspect of preparing for a re-roofing project is to be proactive. Prior to the job, facilitate a walkthrough with your contractor and take note of areas in your home that may be of concern or require extra protection. By taking preparatory measures, you can avoid surprises on the day of the job.

  • Video: Getting Ready For a Roof Remodel

    Complete Video Transcription

MONTEREY — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re planning on re-roofing your home, you’ll need to know how to prepare before remodeling begins. Today, we’re in Monterey with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Pete Scudder of Scudder Roofing Company to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Pete Scudder: Okay. When preparing for a residential re-roof, there’s a few things to consider that are really important. You’re going to – it’s going to be like going through a mild earthquake at your house. So, kind of consider that when you’re putting your project together.

You want to make sure that any fragile items that are on the walls are stabilized or moved off completely. You want to make sure your storage area – so, that’s your attic, your garage, storage, those things – are covered with plastic tarps or removed as well. Because what can happen is when you tear off the existing roof system, debris can come down in there and get inside of boxes. And when Christmas comes around and you have to get inside there and get your stuff out, you’ll see a bunch of debris in there, which you probably don’t want.

Other things to consider is access and egress; how the trucks are going to get into your property. Can they be – can you use your driveway, are there other access points? Even neighbors’ driveways sometimes are used, if you’re friendly with your neighbor. But making sure you have good access points and making sure your driveway is stable enough to take the equipment that’s needed to go on your roof.

A couple of other things you want to think about is your pets; pets and young kids. They’re going to have a bunch of people on the roof and a lot of noise, vibration going on, and some might get scared, your pets might get scared. So, some people actually check their pets into a pet clinic. And they just have to let their kids know there might be some dangerous things going around the outside, meaning debris falling off the roof and those type of things.

So, you want to make sure that protection of the grounds has taken place, which is covering landscape, moving patio furniture, anything that you’re concerned about, protecting walking decks and, again, protecting children from walkway areas so they don’t walk under those type of fall zones.

Also, when you’re inside a house and you’re tearing the roof off, you have to prepare the internal piece. Like I said, it’s like going through a mild earthquake. But when we have to lift the skylights up, you can get dust down inside the house itself.

So, if you have any open beam ceilings, any cathedral type of ceilings, areas where the ceilings could actually vibrate and dust could come through those locations, that can get debris all over your house as well. So, you want to make sure if that’s the case, the contractor is going to cover everything so you don’t have the dust and clean it up afterwards, or something you’re going to think about doing prior to the job.

Probably most importantly is be real proactive; kind of think, kind of walk around the house. Hopefully you’re there with your contractor. He’ll walk you around and show you things that you want to – that you should expect, and where you could help him make his job a lot easier, and just kind of follow those things methodically, and just be there the day the job starts, because that’s a crucial point. Because the day the job starts, things start unfolding, you can see exactly what needs to happen and what doesn’t need to happen.

So, to sum it up, I would say, be proactive, think of it as a mild earthquake, you know. Put the fragile things away or tighten them up. Just make sure it’s a safe environment for everybody who is involved in the process, and you should have a successful project.

The work was outstanding. They explained everything before they did it. They actually took pictures of problems that I was unaware of. They explained everything thoroughly.

They gave me price choices and many options. Also besides the courtesy of the employees, they took care of making sure that all the debris was cleaned up everyday. I recommended them to a neighbor and Scudder Roofing actually gave me a referral check for one hundred and fifty dollars.
