Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for water and fire damage restoration contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Reactic Restoration, the keys to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction are simple: always put the needs of its clients first and work with their best interests in mind. “We understand that experiencing fire and water damage can be very stressful, so we put ourselves in our customers’ shoes and fight for what’s right for them,” says Business Operations Manager Ray Krigel. “Our goal is to make sure each client’s insurance company does what’s best for the situation, not just what’s cheapest and easiest for them.”

Reactic Restoration has been providing water and fire damage restoration services for residential and commercial clients throughout the Greater Bay Area since 2007. The company is available 24/7 to handle emergencies, and it also has the training and equipment to clean air ducts, inspect crawl spaces, and perform mold testing and removal.

Unlike restoration contractors that hire inexperienced technicians in an effort to reduce their operating costs, Reactic Restoration maintains a staff of industry professionals who are trained to help clients through every step of the remediation process. “From our managers to our technicians to our customer service staff, everyone who works here is passionate about providing clients with courteous, thorough services,” says Mr. Krigel. “Remediation work can be confusing if you’ve never dealt with it before, so we make sure to address each client’s concerns and keep them informed every step of the way.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Reactic Restoration is its dedication to quality control in every aspect of its work. “Whenever we start a project, the person who performs the initial inspection is the same person who handles the entire remediation process,” explains Mr. Krigel. “That way, the client always knows who to talk to and we can make sure everything is completed to their exact specifications and adheres to the highest standards of quality.”

Industry Info

Take simple steps to protect and preserve your belongings after a fire.

A good damage restoration contractor can save you a lot of time, money and hassle by salvaging, cleaning, and restoring items that other contractors may not know how to save, but even the best companies will leave some steps of the cleanup process to you. To ensure a quick return to your normal living situation, consider the following tips:

Leave the big cleanup to the professionals. Don’t attempt to wash walls, shampoo carpet or clean upholstery without approval from your restoration contractor—using improper methods can exacerbate the damage and permanently set stains. You should also get permission to clean heavy items and potentially hazardous areas.

Have electrical appliances and lights professionally inspected. Appliances that have been exposed to fire and water can be electrical hazards. Ceiling fans and lights should be inspected by an electrician to rule out wiring damage or electrical problems that could potentially reignite and cause another disaster.

Don’t track dirt and soot around your home. Limit moving around in fire-damaged areas of your home until they’re cleaned by a professional. If you must enter rooms that have been damaged by fire and smoke, put down towels, rugs or protective coverings before walking on the floor to avoid tracking dirt into other areas of your home.

Cover heating and air conditioning registers. Air movement can stir soot and ash within your home, so shut air vents and mask them with plastic in areas where you don’t need air circulation. In rooms that require heating or cooling, secure layered sections of cheesecloth over the air ducts to allow air flow.

Protect chrome surfaces. Chrome and stainless steel surfaces such as appliances, kitchen and bathroom fixtures, and sinks can become stained or damaged by soot. To prevent this, clean and protect them by lightly coating them with baby oil or petroleum jelly.

Care for your clothing. Regular dry cleaners can actually set in smoke odors, so talk to a cleaning professional about the best ways to clean your clothing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How can I learn more about your services?

A: You can visit our website, www.911remediation.com, for general information about our remediation work. You can also call us and talk to one of our customer service staff members—they’re carefully trained and have a lot of industry knowledge, so they can answer almost any question you have. If your question is complicated, one of our project managers can talk to you about your specific needs.

Q: Do you work on jobs of all sizes?

A: Yes, we do everything from small, $100 jobs to large projects that can cost up to $250,000. We’re ready for anything, and we adhere to the same high standards of quality on every job, regardless of its size.

Q: How do I proceed if I have water damage and need my insurance to cover the remediation services?

A: The first thing you should do is contact us, and your second call should be to your insurance company to file a claim. This is the only time you’ll be in contact with your insurance company. After that, we’ll take over all communications so you have one less thing to worry about after experiencing a loss.

Q: Is it important to deal with water damage right away?

A: Water leaks, flooding and other water damage situations are usually pretty urgent—if you wait too long, a secondary damage will occur: mold growth. That’s why it’s important to reach out to a remediation company as soon as water damage occurs so dry-out and cleanup can begin immediately. If we’re dealing with sewage water, we’ll also sanitize the affected area. Our customer service staff can help you decide the best course of action to take.

Q: Can I remove mold myself?

A: No. Mold is hazardous and can cause severe respiratory problems. It’s very important that you call a certified mold remediation company if you suspect your home or business has materials that contain mold. Any attempt to remove mold or disturb mold-containing materials can be hazardous to your health and the health of others who come into contact with the materials or the dust particles they leave behind.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Erez Gilad

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Erez Gilad is a 12-year veteran of the restoration industry and owner of Reactic Restoration, a Diamond Certified company. He can be reached at (510) 221-6767 or by email.

Erez Gilad: Around the World

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Program Reporter

RICHMOND — Erez Gilad was raised on his family’s farm in Israel, and it was there that he learned the trade of his forefathers. As he matured, however, he began to develop bigger ambitions—ones that would eventually take him to the other side of the planet. “I moved to California in 2006, right after I completed my service with the Israel Defense Forces,” he remembers. “I had a friend who lived in the Bay Area and owned his own business, which was my dream. He told me about a colleague who was looking for someone to help establish a local restoration franchise. It seemed like a great opportunity, so I decided to take it. I started out doing carpet cleaning, just to become more familiar with the industry, and I gradually earned my general contractor’s license, as well as certifications in air duct cleaning and water and fire damage remediation.”

Today, as owner of Reactic Restoration, Erez says one of his favorite parts of his job is addressing the psychological aspects of the work. “When people experience a structural loss, they’re typically stressed, confused and angry. When we come into their homes with a friendly face and take control of the situation, it relieves a lot of their stress. I enjoy helping our customers and reassuring them that everything will be taken care of.”

Erez divides his time between the Bay Area and his home country, where he lives with his wife, Rinat, and daughters, Noya and Liya. When asked his favorite part about Northern California, he says he appreciates the harmonious integration of its diverse populous. “You have people from all over the world living together and accepting each other as human beings, which I love to see.”

Outside of work, Erez enjoys a variety of active pastimes, from soccer and yoga to running and swimming. “I also love spending time with my family,” he says. “We enjoy travelling all over the world and seeing new places, but we also like going to the beach and just playing in our backyard.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Erez says he would take his interest in travel to a new level. “I don’t know if I’ll ever retire—I’m the kind of person who always needs something to keep me going. However, if I did, I’d like to take a trip around the world. I recently read about a yacht that goes around the world in 180 days, which would be amazing.”

  • Professional Mold Remediation

RICHMOND — When it comes to removing an in-home mold infestation, proper procedure is critical, not only to ensure a thorough job but also to avoid further contamination. That’s why, if you have a substantial mold problem in your home, your best bet is to call a remediation professional.

The first thing a mold remediation company will do is contain the affected area by putting up plastic, which will keep mold spores from escaping while the work is taking place. In addition to being sealed, the work area is put under negative pressure to capture any airborne spores or particles that alight during the course of the job. Of course, while it’s important to contain the work space, it’s equally crucial for the workers themselves to be protected against contamination, which is why professionals always wear full protective gear.

In most cases, removing a mold infestation involves a lot more than just wiping down surfaces, especially if the mold is often rooted within drywall and/or structural wood. In this scenario, demolition will be necessary to ensure a thorough removal. After opening up the walls, the remediation team will sand down everything inside and place all affected materials in sealed plastic bags to prevent cross-contamination. Finally, they will use microbial wipes and HEPA vacuums to thoroughly eradicate any trace of the mold.

  • How to Minimize the Impact of Water Damage

RICHMOND — Water damage can be devastating, not only due to the damage itself, but also because it can throw a wrench in your daily routine. One way to minimize the impact of water damage is to deal with it immediately, as delayed action increases the chance for secondary damage like mold and mildew growth. After calling a restoration specialist, here are some steps you can take to curtail the damage before the professionals arrive:

    • Shut off your home’s water main, which is typically located at the sidewalk in front of your home. In the event of a broken pipe, shutting off this valve will stop the water from entering your home.

    • Try to identify the source of the leak—it’ll help the professionals solve the problem more quickly upon their arrival.

    • Open your windows and doors to provide maximum ventilation.

    • Mop as much standing water as you can. You can also use towels to dry wet areas.

Remember, when water damage occurs, hiring a professional to dry out the structure is the key to avoiding problems after the fact, particularly mold. By getting professional assistance and taking independent measures, you can minimize the effects of water damage on both your home and life.

RICHMOND — Host, Sarah Rutan: When it comes to removing a mold infestation, the professionals take a thorough approach. To get a firsthand view of the process, we’re in Richmond with Terry Barkai of Reactic Restoration, speaking on behalf of Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Erez Gilad.

Terry Barkai: We’re here today to talk about how to do mold remediation safely. Inside, we’re going to see how the structure is contained. The areas that we’re working on are completely sealed; negative areas running; and the guys inside cleaning up [00:00:18 unintelligible] to ensure that no bacteria or spores are still settled in. As you can see, all the guys are wearing PPE to make sure they are safe and your house is safe. HEPA vacuum – [00:00:32 did all the HEPA vacuum] that’s been done through all the wood members of the structure, to ensure the removal of all bacteria and spores.

And here, you will see now the guys put in all the affected materials in plastic bags to ensure there will be no cross-contamination once we get it out of the site. So, as you can see, some of the mold is just a surface mold that we can basically wipe down with antimicrobial. No chemicals are in use here. And that’s the importance of doing mold remediation safely.

Terry Barkai: A Restorative Career

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

RICHMOND — Terry Barkai used to build new structures for a living, but today his career is all about restoring damaged ones. “Before working in the restoration industry, I was in general construction,” he affirms. “I met Erez Gilad, the owner of Reactic Restoration, and we had a good connection. Not long after, I went to work for him. With all that was happening with the wildfires in California, fire damage restoration really interested me, much more so than general construction. I figured I could really excel in an industry that interested me, so I decided to give it a shot.”

Today, as business operations manager of Reactic Restoration, Terry says he has two favorite aspects of his job. “First, I like that it’s very dynamic—every day brings something totally new. The other part I enjoy is helping people. When someone is experiencing a crisis and you get to help them out of it, it’s a very fulfilling feeling.”

A resident of Walnut Creek (where he lives with his wife, Eti, and their son), Terry spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “I enjoy the outdoors, especially if there’s water involved,” he details. “My family and I like to go swimming and boating at local spots like the Sacramento Delta over at Bay Point. I also enjoy playing basketball with my son and visiting old friends.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Terry says the customer is always his top priority. “At the end of the day, my biggest concern is making sure our customers are comfortable and satisfied with our work. By performing the job in a conscientious and professional manner, we leave them feeling safe and secure in the knowledge that we’ve taken care of everything.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Terry says he’d build his dream house. “I’d build a big house near a river, with lots of amenities, including a home theater and a basketball court. That way, the next time we have to shelter in place because of a pandemic, I’ll have plenty of things to keep myself entertained.”

  • Fire Damage Restoration Procedure

RICHMOND — During the past few years, wildfires have become an increasing concern in California. In 2020 alone, more than four million acres were burned statewide, along with more than 10,000 structures. If your home was affected by wildfire, you may need to hire a fire damage restoration contractor to handle repairs and remediation. However, before hiring a contractor, it’s good to get a basic understanding of the protocols and procedures involved in performing a proper restoration. Here are some steps a fire damage restoration contractor should perform:

    • First, the contractor will clean the entire affected area, whether it’s just one room or your entire house. In addition to wiping everything down, they’ll use vacuums to remove any soot and other residue.

    • After cleaning, the contractor will apply an odor-counteractive product like Sentinel to remove any residual odors on top or inside of the affected materials.

    • Finally, the contractor will run special machines (typically a hydroxyl generator and an ozone generator) in the affected area to remove any remaining odor molecules. These machines will need to run for anywhere between 12 and 72 hours, depending on the extent and severity of the damage.

  • Repairing Fire Damage on Concrete Surfaces

RICHMOND — When it comes to repairing fire damage, the methods a contractor employs vary depending on the character of the affected surface. For example, cleaning fire, smoke, and soot damage on concrete surfaces requires a different method than cleaning damaged drywall and wood. The most effective method is dry ice blasting, which utilizes special machinery that enables highly pressurized cleaning to remove all smoke and soot residues from the affected concrete surfaces.

If a contractor doesn’t have this machinery, they’ll have to do a thorough wipe-down of the affected surfaces. What makes dry ice blasting superior is its ability to penetrate and remove residues from all the tiny, porous areas in the concrete. A simple wipe-down just doesn’t have the same impact. So, when hiring a fire damage remediation company, be sure to ask about the techniques and machinery it employs.

  • Video: A Technique for Repairing Fire Damaged Concrete

    Complete Video Transcription

RICHMOND — Terry Barkai: Today I wanted to discuss a special technique we using when we have projects with fire, smoke, and soot damage over concrete-type of material, versus the normal residential drywall and wood. In those cases, what we utilize is dry ice blasting. As you can see, the guys here using the compressor and the special machine are putting a lot of pressure on the concrete, using the dry ice blasting and removes all the residues of smoke and soot from the surfaces. If a company or contractor does not have the ability to use this method, what they will have to do is a wipe-down of the surfaces. What makes dry ice blasting much more superior and much more effective is that with that technique, you can actually penetrate all the small, little, porous areas and remove all residues. A simple wipe-down like the old days just wouldn’t work in these cases.

  • Video: Fire Damage Restoration

    Complete Video Transcription

RICHMOND — Tomer Ezra: Hello, my name is Tomer, and I’m from Reactic Restoration. In the past couple of years, California wildfires have become an increasing issue. Just in 2020 alone, over four million acres have burned throughout the state of California. With wildfires, your house may be affected, but you might not be able to see it to your naked eye. Not so much as when you would have a fire inside of your kitchen, and all of the wall’s completely burnt, but it is equally as important to make sure that you take the necessary steps to remediate your house.

The way that a restoration company would come in and remediate your house is, they would do it in three different steps. First, they would come in and clean the entire affected area. This may be your whole house, or maybe just your kitchen. First, they would clean and wipe down all of the walls, and then vacuum all of the soot and smoke residue that may remain inside of your house. The next step that they would take when everything is nice and clean inside of your property is apply Scentinol, which is a odor-counteractive material that we use to make sure that all affected materials don’t have any remaining odors left inside them or on top of them.

The next step that we take is placing special machines inside of your property, or even the affected rooms, to ensure that there are no remaining odor molecules inside of your property. The way that we do this is taking the hydroxyl generator, as well as the ozone generator, and running them anywhere between 12 to 48, maybe even 72 hours, depending on how affected your property is. Any time you’re getting a remediation process done on your property, make sure you get it done as soon as possible so you can get back to your normal lifestyle and go back to living that happy life that you live.

Any time as well that you’re hiring a remediation company, make sure that you understand the protocols and the necessary steps that they should be taking in order to make sure your house is nice and taken care of in the proper form.
