If you’re planning to redesign or remodel your home, don’t overlook changes that will increase functionality and ease of living throughout the house. Even if you don’t have any major remodeling projects in mind, a few simple additions or alterations can pay big dividends by making daily chores much easier and adding value to your home if you decide to sell it later. Consider the following tips:

• Replace doorknobs with lever-style handles. Install “D-style” handles or pull hardware on cabinetry for ease of use and a finished look. While in the planning stages of a remodel, increase door widths to accommodate future lifestyle needs.
• Replacing carpeting with hard surface flooring will dramatically reduce indoor dirt and simplify cleaning, making it easier for people of all ages to maneuver.
• Reorganize shelves and pantries so the heaviest and most commonly used items are within easy reach. You can also install slide-out shelves in kitchen cabinets and pantries to improve access and increase storage.
• When replacing kitchen appliances, consider those that require less reaching and bending. Some refrigerator models come with a freezer on the side or bottom rather than the top, which makes it easier to handle heavy frozen items. Several manufacturers make refrigerators, freezers and dishwashers that slide out like drawers, which makes loading and unloading much easier. Always look for Energy Star rated appliances.
• When considering an addition for a two story remodel, stacked closets framed properly can easily accommodate a future residential elevator.
• For bathroom remodels, replace an enclosed vanity with a pedestal sink to enhance leg room. If you currently have a bathtub/shower combination but rarely use the tub, consider installing a walk-in shower with hand shower and thermostatic temperature controls. New countertop and flooring products can add color and drama with the added advantage of ease of maintenance.

Q: How much will my project cost?

A: Each project is different, but the real question to ask yourself is, ‘How much do I want to invest?’ Home improvements are investments in both your home’s value and your quality of life. We can either work from a set investment and build to fit that budget, or we can work from a wish list and complete the highest priority work first. Either way, our goal is to help you get the most out of your investment.

Q: Why do bathroom remodels take so long to complete?

A: Many people are surprised by how long a bathroom remodel takes, given that it’s such a small room. A bathroom remodeling project can involve eight different trades or more—and a minimum of four building department inspections that have to be coordinated. Arranging to have the right tradesmen onsite when they’re needed is challenging from a management perspective. But with our experience, you can be assured that we’ll deliver your bathroom remodel on schedule, if not sooner.

Q: Can I choose the materials to use in my remodel?

A: Yes. Our designers will work with you to choose materials that fit your lifestyle and meet your budget criteria.

Q: Will you work with my architect or other tradesmen with whom I’m familiar?

A: Absolutely. We work with many different architects, and we’re happy to work with any subcontractors you’ve had good experiences with, providing they conform to our subcontractor requirements and agreements. Working with people you know and trust is often the best way to ensure your satisfaction.

Q: Should I have a design in hand before making a commitment to start the bid process?

A: Yes. Having a solid design from the beginning pays off in the long run because it defines the scope of the job, reduces costs and speeds up the process. Investing in the design is money well spent.

Q: How do you handle changes once a project is underway?

A: We generate a ‘Change Order’ for our client’s approval. Changes are an inevitable part of this business. Unforeseen field conditions can generate a Change Order. As clients become more familiar with the plans, they often can increase the scope of work or change material selections. Jim Adkins: Finishing Strong

REDWOOD CITY – While he’s since made a successful career for himself, Jim Adkins’ involvement in the construction industry began with a rude awakening. “I started out as a teenager, working summers for my grandfather, Walter Springs Sr.,” he recalls. “I remember coming to work the first day and thinking I was going to do something easy like drive around in a truck or backhoe. When I walked into my grandfather’s office, he pointed to a brand new shovel in the corner and told me that when I learned how to use that tool, he’d give me the next one. Basically, I started my career making blisters!”

Despite a less-than-idyllic start, Jim went on to become well-versed in all aspects of construction and eventually earned his certification as a master finish carpenter. Today, as president of Springs Construction, Jim says he enjoys building relationships with clients as much as he does building their homes. “I always tell people that my favorite part of the job is handing the keys to the clients and telling them, ‘Here’s your new home!’ The whole process is very rewarding.”

A native of Northern California, Jim lived in various parts of the San Francisco area before finally settling in San Jose, where he lives with his wife, Chris, and their children, Laurel and Bryce. He says his favorite part about living and working in the Bay Area is its natural diversity. “You drive 45 minutes west and you’re at the ocean, and you drive four hours northeast and you’re in the snow. Essentially, you could go surfing and skiing in the same day if you wanted. Not a lot of places can boast that kind of versatility. The more I travel, the more I realize that I have a pretty good place to live.”

While he’s passionate about construction work, Jim’s other love is motorsports. “I watch drag racing and Formula One religiously, and I also follow Motocross and Supercross,” he says. “Whenever there’s a race in town, my son and I are there to see it.”

In both his life and career, Jim attributes his personal success in part to an ongoing process of self-improvement. “I just try to do a little better every day,” he explains. “Whether it’s my performance in the field or my role as a husband and father, my goal is to do things better today than I did them yesterday. I think that attitude has motivated me and helped bring me to where I am today.”

Q: What’s your favorite sport?
A: I’m a big motorsports fan. In NASCAR, I root for Jeff Gordon; in drag racing, I really like John Force; and in Formula One, my favorite driver is Kimi Räikkönen, who drives for Ferrari.

Q: What was your first concert?
A: Eddie Money at the Cow Palace, when I was 16 years old.

Q: What do you like on your pizza?
A: Pepperoni and extra cheese.

Q: If someone was making a movie about your life, what actor would you choose to play you?
A: Brad Pitt, because I’m extremely handsome! (Laughs)

Q: What Seinfeld character do you identify most with?
A: Kramer. He’s just a happy-go-lucky person—he has his friends and his ideas, and that’s about all he needs.

Q: What’s the best gift you ever received?
A: When I was 12 years old, I wanted a radio-controlled car called a Baja Buggy for Christmas. I was sure my parents got it for me, but Christmas morning came and there was no Baja Buggy. I was disappointed, but I was old enough to understand that my parents probably weren’t able to afford it, so I let it go. Later that afternoon, after some family members had come over, my dad said to me, “Hey, go open the drapes on that sliding door and let in some light.” I pulled back the drapes and there was the Baja Buggy!

    REDWOOD CITY —  Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re planning on a remodel, you’ll first need to know where to start. Today we’re in Redwood City with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Jim Adkins of Spring Construction to hear his advice on preparing for a remodel.

    Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Jim Adkins: Many people do not know where to begin when doing a remodeling project. Where do you begin? One of the most important aspects of any project is a budget that you can afford or that will be appropriate for your neighborhood. Remember, establishing a budget early on will drive the entire process through design, permit process as well as construction process.

    The next thing to think about is a time frame. Do you have time limits on this project? Does it need to be completed by a certain date? That will certainly affect the budget and potentially the project as a whole.

    Also, what are the city requirements? Is there something that your city requires you to do that will add additional costs that are unable to be met by your budget? Most cities have very good websites and have information that is readily available. If its not available, a trip to the billing department and talking to the planning and building officials is a great idea. Tons of information to be gained.

    Also, what is your wish list? What are you expecting to get more square footage? Do you want an additional bathroom? Or is there any special needs that are required for you to make this project a success?

    Next, you will need to hire a design professional and a general contractor. Hiring the two of them at the same time or at least engaging them at the same time is always a good idea. Remember, you have a budget to be met and a building contractor is the one who is going to establish that budget followed by the design that will give you what you want within that budget.
