Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for painting contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Stanford Painting, Inc., the most effective way to maintain a base of satisfied customers is to provide a better value and higher level of service than they’re accustomed to receiving. “Our clients understand that they’re getting a lot more from our services than other painting companies,” affirms CEO Jay Furlong. “They know that whenever they need anything from us, we’ll be there.”

Stanford Painting has been providing interior and exterior painting services for residential and commercial clients throughout Santa Clara County since 1988. The family-owned and operated company has the in-house capabilities to handle every aspect of the painting process (including preparation and post-project inspections), and it’s also qualified to stain and refinish cabinets.

Unlike less experienced painting contractors that strive to complete projects as quickly as possible and sacrifice quality as a result, Stanford Painting takes the time to make sure its clients are completely satisfied with every phase of its work. “We build a bridge with each customer from the first point of contact, and we have multiple layers of quality control,” says Mr. Furlong. “Before the job starts, we’ll walk around the house with the homeowner and go over the scope of the job so everyone is on the same page. Then the superintendent visits the job once a day to walk around with the foreman, talk about progress and discuss any issues. That happens every day until the end, when the foreman and the superintendent do a full inspection.”

Another distinguishing feature of Stanford Painting is its unique position as a community-based company. “We’ve painted thousands of houses in our community,” explains Mr. Furlong. “We see our clients at the store, and we’ve coached their kids in softball and basketball. Since we’ve formed these relationships with them, they trust us to handle their painting projects and are happy to invite us into their homes. Our company family has become part of the larger family of our community, and that means so much to us.”

Industry Info

When it comes to hiring a painting contractor, it’s important to focus on value and quality.
Sometimes it can be difficult to tell if you’re getting the value you expected from a painter. New paint may look great at first, but there can be hidden signs of cut corners. According to Jay Furlong, CEO of Stanford Painting, Inc. in Mountain View, you shouldn’t feel bad about double-checking your contractor’s work. “Get on the ladder and take a look—did they paint the trim around the tops of the windows?” he advises. “Did they prep and paint underneath the windows? It may not seem like a big problem because you never see the top of a window, but that’s the most vulnerable part. The water will go right into the wall if it’s not sealed. That attention to detail can tell you a lot about a contractor’s overall worth ethic.”

Preparation can be another weak spot for painting companies. In fact, many don’t approach jobs with a high level of commitment, particularly when it comes to preparation. “Paint stripping is time-consuming and takes a lot of elbow grease,” says Mr. Furlong. “Preparation is based on how badly the current paint layer has failed. The quick way to do it is to knock off the loose stuff and paint over it. The problem is, paint flakes are actually separated from the wall a couple of inches farther up, but you can’t see it. If you pull off the flakes but leave the rest and paint over it, it’s going to flake again within a year or two.” He says the answer is for painters to get aggressive with flaking paint by hand scraping, power sanding and removing every place that has separated from the substrate.

Quality control is another important factor. Mr. Furlong says painting companies should have a multilayered approach to quality and assign several people to check the work before it’s considered complete. “Before the job starts, there should be a walkthrough with the homeowner and the superintendent or foreman that covers the scope of the job so everyone is on the same page. Then, after the work has started, there should be daily visits from the foreman or superintendent. At the end of the job, there should be a full inspection to make sure it was done right.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will it take to complete my painting project?
A: We can give you that information during or after the initial walkthrough. Once we’ve calculated our estimated hours, we’ll add that to the bid. We’ll also let you know how many workers will be on the crew.

Q: Who will be on my jobsite each day?
A: Along with the painters who do the work, our superintendent visits the jobsite every day, and you’ll have his phone number in case you have any questions or concerns. Our foreman is also onsite every day, and he has his finger on the pulse of everything that’s going on.

Q: Will you give me a written bid or contract?
A: After we do a walkthrough and take notes about the job, we’ll show you the two forms that constitute the bid. One is the addendum that goes through all of the particulars, including the preparation work, the brand of paint and the product line. It gets very specific. On the front page, there’s a line that includes the price for the work, the deposit required and the payment details. The deposit is 10 percent of the total cost or $1,000, whichever is lower.

Q: Why are your prices higher than average?
A: We do much more extensive preparation and finish work, and we also use high-quality materials. It’s important to understand that most painting companies pay the same wages for qualified labor, because if you don’t pay your crew members, they’re going to leave. And if we use high-quality materials, we’re going to have a similar material rate. So, the difference comes down to how much time is spent on the job, and that’s a big indicator of the overall quality.

Q: Can you help me choose colors for my painting project?
A: Yes, we’ll go through the entire custom deck of paint colors and help you choose. One of our best guidance points is to spend the weekend driving around and looking at houses with paint colors that you really like. We can go to those houses, match the colors, get samples and put them on your house. We can also match your home’s current color or the color on a paint chip. Our color consultation process is part of the overall price, so there are no extra fees.

Q: Is one brand of paint better than the others?
A: You have to be careful when you hear that one brand is better than another. Some brands certainly excel over others, but each brand has multiple grades of paint. For example, if you get the bottom grade of Benjamin Moore paint, it’ll be lousy. You should be willing to pay a little more to get a better paint because it will last longer.

Jay Furlong: A Fresh Coat

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

MOUNTAIN VIEW — After finishing college, Jay Furlong could have pursued a career in his field of study, but instead he decided to start fresh in the painting trade. “I have a degree in mechanical engineering and product design,” he explains. “During the summers in college, I did handyman work with a friend, including some painting. After graduation, a lot of my colleagues got design jobs, but I didn’t like the idea of sitting at a cubicle or even working for a boss—I liked the freedom of doing my own thing. I looked at my options and decided to get into painting. Besides having some experience, I’d taken some color design classes in school. Plus, as trades go, painting has a fairly low barrier of entry—all you really need is a roller and some brushes to get started.”

Today, 30 years after founding Stanford Painting, Inc., Jay talks about his two favorite parts of his job. “One is our company’s family atmosphere—we have a very close-knit team, and everyone knows whenever there’s a wedding or a new baby. The other is interacting with our customers. Working in people’s homes is a great way to get rooted in your community, so I really enjoy making connections and building relationships.”

A resident of Palo Alto, Jay spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “I like staying fit and going on runs with my dogs in the redwoods and at the beach,” he details. “I also do a ton of stuff with my daughters, Casey, Allie and Jaime. We love cooking and going camping together.” Additionally, Jay enjoys taking occasional trips to Canada and Hawaii, the respective settings for his upbringing.

In regard to his professional career, Jay espouses the importance of having the right focus. “Any business needs to be profitable to stay afloat, but instead of worrying about money, I focus on keeping my employees and clients happy,” he explains. “I do my best to support my employees and make sure they’re getting what they need to thrive in their careers. For my clients, I focus on providing the best possible experiences, as well as a great value for their money. I think when you have the right focus, your profit margins pretty much take care of themselves.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Jay says he probably wouldn’t. “I’d probably start another business,” he laughs. “Two of my daughters will be done with college soon, and we’ve talked about a couple of business ideas, so maybe I’d start something up with them.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: LuLu’s at Town & Country Village in Palo Alto.

Q: What’s your favorite kind of music?
A: ’80s music, especially hard rock.

Q: What was your first pet?
A: A squirrel monkey named Chi-Chi. When I was a child growing up in Canada, my mom would catch me on the phone calling the local zoos, trying to buy a monkey. She said, “If we ever move to a tropical place, I’ll get you a monkey.” Lo and behold, we moved to Hawaii two years later, so she followed through and got me a monkey.

Q: What’s your favorite snack?
A: Corn chips and guacamole.

Q: If you could time-travel, would you go to the past or the future?
A: I’d go back to the 1980s. Maybe it’s because I was a teenager then, but there’s just something special about the ’80s.

  • Preparing Your Home Exterior for Winter

MOUNTAIN VIEW — Prior to winter, it’s a good idea to prepare your home exterior for the windy, rainy weather. You can do this by inspecting your home exterior for any moisture-vulnerable areas and sealing them with an appropriate product. These include any areas of exposed wood (which should be sealed with primer) and any gaps or holes (which should be filled with caulking or patched with an appropriate exterior sealant). By keeping water from permeating your home’s wood, this annual step can go a long way toward prolonging the life of your house paint.

  • House Painting: Upfront Cost vs. Long-Term Value

MOUNTAIN VIEW — When choosing a contractor to paint your house, it’s important to weigh upfront cost against long-term value. As you look at different bids, you’ll likely see a wide range of cost estimates and naturally be attracted to the lower ones. However, in terms of long-term value, you may actually save money by choosing a higher-priced contractor.

In many cases, low bids are low for a reason. To undercut competing bids, a painter needs to cut costs, and the simplest way to do that is to take shortcuts on the job. This may consist of using inferior paint products, neglecting proper prep work and/or only applying one coat of paint (a quality job should have two). All of these shortcuts can cause a paint job to fail prematurely.

Let’s say you hire the cheapest contractor at an upfront cost of $5,000. Seems like a good deal, right? However, if they do a subpar job and the paint fails four years later, it won’t seem like such a bargain in hindsight. By contrast, if you pay $10,000 for a quality job that lasts 10 to 14 years, you’ll save money in the long run. In this way, a job with a higher upfront cost may actually be less expensive than a lower-priced one, due to the long-term value it provides.

Regardless of whether their bid is low or high, you shouldn’t hire a painting contractor based on price alone. Here are a couple of additional steps you should take before hiring:

Read bids carefully. Look for a detailed breakdown of the work to be performed and materials to be used. This tells you the contractor has done their homework and gives you a clear expectation of what you’ll receive. In contrast, a vague, bare-bones bid not only leaves the contractor’s thoroughness in question, it also gives leeway for shortcuts to be taken, as the thoroughness and quality of the job are left unspecified.

Do your research. Look at a company’s online reviews and check with the Better Business Bureau to see if it has many complaints on file. A company’s reputation will tell you a lot about the quality you’re likely to receive.

  • Exterior Painting Procedure in Three Steps

MOUNTAIN VIEW — When it comes to exterior painting, proper procedure is crucial to ensure long-lasting results. In essence, this procedure boils down to the following three steps:

    Surface preparation

Before any paint or primer can be applied, the surface needs to be clean and ready for application. This includes treating any mold, mildew or dry rot; power washing the entire structure; scraping off the old paint; and power sanding to smooth down the surface.

    Priming

Primer ensures a strong bond between the surface and the finish paint. If you apply paint directly to the surface without primer, it’s going to peel off prematurely. This goes for both wood and metal surfaces, so make sure all surfaces are properly primed before moving on to step three.

    Painting

Typically, an exterior paint job should consist of two coats—this will give the overall job more staying power. When correctly applied, a quality paint job should last a minimum of eight to 12 years.

  • Video: The Importance of Paint Preparation

    Complete Video Transcription

MOUNTAIN VIEW — Host, Sarah Rutan: One of the keys to a long-lasting exterior paint job is proper surface preparation. To learn more, we’re in Mountain View with Frank Hampton of Stanford Painting, speaking on behalf of Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Jay Furlong.

Frank Hampton: Here we are in Palo Alto California at Gamble Gardens. We painted this house about thirty years ago and we’re doing it a rest-we’re just lucky enough to do it again. We want to show you the proper ways to prep your house. First what we do we treated the mildew areas, we power wash the entire structure, we go through and as you see we hand-scrape the paint off, we power sand it, we smooth it down, and the next step is going to be priming and painting.

It’s important to prime all exposed areas just because if you don’t prime it and you put paint directly on the surface, it’s just going to peel off and you’re going to have to paint it again in two years. So it’s really important to put a good primer on the raw, exposed surfaces: raw metal, raw wood. Because what it does, it creates a whole new surface to put any kind of paint you want on.

If you do it properly – you put one coat of primer on, two coats of finish – a good quality paint job should last anywhere from eight to 12 years. Ours have been lasting 15, easily.

  • Video: Getting the Most Value for Your Painting Project

    Complete Video Transcription

MOUNTAIN VIEW — Host, Sarah Rutan: When looking at bids for a house painting project, it’s important to weigh upfront cost against long-term value. Today we’re in Mountain View with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Jay Furlong of Stanford Painting to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Jay Furlong: When choosing a painting contractor to paint your house, something that’s very important to consider is the long-term value versus the upfront cost. You may get a much more attractive upfront price from a contractor. And if that job’s not done properly, it will only last a couple of years. So, a $5,000 price tag that lasts 2 years is a much different proposition than a $10,000 job that’s done properly that will last you 10 to 14 years.

So, when you’re looking to pick a painting contractor, look at some of the details. The kind of work they’re going to do, the preparation, the number of coats, the quality of the paint. And don’t focus as much on the upfront cost. Because that may not be the best value for the situation.

  • Video: Preparing Your Home Exterior for Winter

MOUNTAIN VIEW — Host, Sarah Rutan: A simple annual step can go a long way toward protecting your home exterior from winter weather. To learn more, we’re in Mountain View with Frank Hampton of Stanford Painting, speaking on behalf of Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Jay Furlong.

Frank Hampton: Before the rain comes, you want to prepare your house for the wintertime when it gets here. To get your house ready for winter, you want to go over all exposed surfaces, such as wood, any holes on the house, you want to patch those, you want to prime the exposed wood so it doesn’t absorb water and lift the paint.

By caulking all gaps and openings, that just helps the paint last because the water does not get into those cracks or holes in the future. And again, always two coats on your house.
