PHCC logoThe Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association (PHCC) promotes the advancement and education of plumbing and HVAC professionals and advocates for improvements in public health and environmental safety. Since its founding in 1883, the PHCC has assisted in establishing an apprenticeship system, worked with lawmakers to enact sanitation regulations, helped develop improvements in plumbing fixtures and created educational programs to keep its members up-to-date on industry advancements. The association’s goal is to “become so relevant that PHCC contractors are the best choice for professionalism, reliable products and knowledgeable service.”

History
The United States’ oldest trade association, the PHCC was founded in New York City at a time when increasing numbers of households and commercial buildings were installing indoor plumbing, which meant municipalities had to create and maintain sewer systems. From these beginnings, the PHCC has always positioned itself as an organization that not only promotes professional excellence but also protects public health. Today, its 3,500 members come from the plumbing, heating, air conditioning, solar heat and radiant heat industries. They work in residential, commercial and industrial settings.

Industry Stewardship
The PHCC plays an important role in the creation of industry safety standards. The association speaks on behalf of its members as it works with legislators on regulations affecting the work performed by industry professionals and the products they use. Additionally, the PHCC has literally written the book on plumbing installation: the National Standard Plumbing Code, which is the go-to resource for installation and a publication heavily relied upon by permitting agencies as they draft public safety laws.

Professional Development
The PHCC is dedicated to helping its members succeed throughout every step of their careers, from apprenticeship to owning a business. The association places a strong focus on education and provides members with access to many online training resources. The PHCC also holds annual trade shows and conferences where members can network and learn about industry developments. The PHCC Educational Foundation was established in 1987 to improve industry standards through education and professional training. Today, it provides dozens of scholarships for vocational training and organizes instructional programs aimed at apprentices, technicians, and business owners.

Community Action
The California chapter of the PHCC takes an additional role in community service by participating in Copper for Kids, an effort to collect scrap copper to benefit children in foster care.
