If your heating and air conditioning system needs to be repaired, there are a lot of service companies willing to do the job. However, it’s important to remember that due to the sophisticated nature of HVAC technology, system maintenance and repairs should only be performed by a licensed technician. Hiring an unlicensed, inexperienced company will not only affect the quality of your repair, it can also create a dangerous situation for everyone in your home.

An HVAC system is equipped with an automatic shutoff switch that’s triggered when a safety issue is identified, which can be anything from overheating to a clogged flue. In the event of a system shutdown, an experienced HVAC professional will be able to decipher the symptoms and get to the root of the problem, while an inexperienced person may not understand what’s really causing it. Due to a lack of expertise, the person may find a way to bypass the shutdown but neglect to fix the actual underlying issue, which can lead to consequences like fires or carbon monoxide emission.

When your HVAC system needs to be serviced, be sure to hire a licensed professional who will be able to offer safe, long-term solutions rather than temporary fixes.

  1. Thanks for the information. I agree that it is important to hire an HVAC professional with experience and licensing. Like you said, a licensed professional can “offer safe, long-term solutions rather than temporary fixes.” Taking care of your family and home is so important that it only makes sense to hire an expert.

Thank you for the advice on choosing a HVAC contractor! My house doesn’t have air conditioning and I’d like to get it installed before next summer. I’ll make sure to check out the contractors’ certifications and insurance policies and get an estimate. What would be a reasonable estimate for adding a cooling system to a small house?

I agree that nobody but someone experienced should ever try to fix their HVAC system. The only thing these people, like me, should do is clean their exterior and interior units. I really hate to think of what the damages would be like if someone bypassed the automatic shut off instead of fixing the problem. Even if the problem is minor it will still cost less to repair it sooner rather than later.

I disagree with James. The article isn’t saying that nobody should ever try and diagnose their HVAC system, but is instead warning against an inexperienced COMPANY coming to repair things. If you, as an individual, can figure out what’s gone wrong with your system, you’ll be much better placed to hire the right kind of specialist you need. Additionally, if you discover it’s a small problem, such as replacing a filter, you will save yourself (and the company you hire) a lot of wasted time and effort.

My mother’s AC unit stopped working and I took quick look at it and had no idea what was wrong with it. You wrote that a HVAC professional will be able to decipher the symptoms and get to the root of the problem. That is the kind of service we could seriously use right now, as I don’t want to accidentally damage the unit further and would love to be able to know it works perfectly.

I like your point about how important it is to hire a licensed technician. I think it’s also a good idea to try and find someone who offers a warranty. Warranties show that the technician believes in his or her work and that you probably won’t have to call them back soon.

Thank you for talking about the importance of finding a licensed professional to take a look at your HVAC units. I can see how looking for this can help you make sure you find someone that knows what to do and how to help you best. It is important to remember that consulting with the BBB can help you reduce the stress of finding a competent professional.

Our furnace hasn’t been blowing hot air for the past two weeks. It was great to read in the text that an HVAC system is equipped with an automatic shutoff switch that’s triggered when a safety issue is identified. We live in an old house so I am no expert but I would imagine that our furnace isn’t equipped with that feature. We will be sure to get our furnace inspected before anything else!

I’m in the process of putting the final touches on a new house and one thing I wanted to focus on was excellent air conditioning. No cutting corners, but I do want to start out with great units and finding a company or person with the right credentials for keeping it running smoothly for a long time. My aunt has had constant trouble with her stuff since I can remember, so she’s been a big “don’t be like her” reference for me.
