Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for auto body shops that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For A-Rod Auto Collision, the best way to keep customers happy is to take care of their needs and exceed their expectations throughout every step of the repair process. “We have good hours, we’re flexible and we’re dedicated to providing positive experiences,” says owner Alex Rodriguez. “Our customers know they can stop by at any time to check on the progress of their vehicles or talk to our technicians, and they really appreciate that.”

A-Rod Auto Collision has been providing auto body repair services at its San Jose facility since 2016. The family-owned and operated company has the in-house capabilities to handle everything from dent removals to frame straightening, and it also offers painting and detailing services to customers who want to alter the looks of their cars.

Unlike less experienced auto body shops that hire minimally trained technicians, A-Rod Auto Collision makes sure all its employees are skilled, experienced and certified. “Our technicians have been working in the auto body industry for years, so they know what it takes to repair damage and provide quality repairs,” says Mr. Rodriguez. “We treat our customers’ vehicles like they were our own, which leads to better results. It’s a great feeling when we’re able to bring a car back to the way it was before the accident.”

To further differentiate itself from its competition, A-Rod Auto Collision backs its work with a lifetime warranty, which Mr. Rodriguez says is important for establishing trust with customers. “We want our quality of work and attention to detail to separate us from other shops, and our lifetime warranty is proof of that commitment. It doesn’t cover new hits or chips, but it will cover fading and problems with our materials and workmanship.”

Industry Info

When it comes to choosing a quality auto body repair shop, it’s important to do your homework.

Whether your vehicle has been in a collision, has dents or scratches, or needs a new paint job, choosing the right auto body shop is important. Not only will a quality shop give you better results, it will also provide peace of mind during and after the repair process. But every shop claims to be good, so how can you tell the difference?

Talking to experts is a good place to start. Alex Rodriguez, owner of A-Rod Auto Collision in San Jose, offer these tips:

Find a shop that communicates with you. Your vehicle might be in the shop for days or weeks, depending on the work that needs to be done. So, it’s important to find a shop that keeps you informed about the status of your vehicle. Mr. Rodriguez says good shops will use technology for simpler communication (phone, email, text) and allow you to visit so you can see the progress firsthand.

Demand certified repair technicians. “Insurance companies require I-CAR certification for anyone who works on your vehicle,” says Mr. Rodriguez. If a shop’s technicians don’t have the right certifications, it can make for a lower-quality repair and put you in jeopardy of losing insurance coverage or refunds.

Choose a shop that can work on your specific type of vehicle. If you have a common make and model, most shops can help you, but for electric vehicles, newer models and rare makes, Mr. Rodriguez encourages choosing a shop that has the requisite skills and tools. “A lot of shops don’t know how to work on certain vehicles or parts, especially electronics and computers,” he says. “Everything is electronic now, so there’s more to repair.”

Look for a shop that offers a good warranty. The work is going to look good when you pick up your car…it’s six months or six years down the road that really matters. So, it’s important to find a shop that offers a long warranty that covers materials and labor. Additionally, the shop should be willing to put its promises in writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will it take to fix my car?
A: It depends on what needs to be done. The work will go faster if we don’t have to order parts, but sometimes we discover additional damage, so it really depends on the situation. We’ll give you an estimated completion date based on your specific repairs.

Q: Do you offer color matching services?
A: Yes, but it’s important to understand that even color from the same manufacturer can vary, especially from plastic to metal or with older cars whose paint has faded. We try to match colors as closely as possible, but sometimes it’s not exact.

Q: What do you mean by “lifetime warranty”?
A: Our lifetime warranty covers workmanship and materials for as long as you own the vehicle. It doesn’t cover new hits or chips, but it will cover fading and problems with our process, materials or workmanship.

Q: Can you help me get a rental vehicle?
A: Yes. We can also give you a ride home or deliver your car to you when it’s ready. We’ll go out of our way to take care of you.

Q: Will you keep me updated on the progress of my vehicle while it’s in your shop?
A: Yes. You’re also welcome to stop by any time and talk with the owner or technicians about where we’re at in the process.

Q: After my car gets painted, how long do I have to wait to wax it?
A: New paint has a 30-day cure time, so don’t do anything heavy to your car during that period. You can hand-wash it, but don’t add wax until the 30 days are up.

Q: What can I do to keep my car clean and protect its paint?
A: The most important thing you can do is protect your car from birds. Bird droppings will stain fresh paint, so find a way to keep your vehicle covered.

Alex Rodriguez: A Family Operation

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN JOSE — For years, Alex Rodriguez and his family had talked about starting an automotive business. Finally, by aligning their skills and resources, they successfully followed through with their dream. “I come from a big family, and we’ve always worked on each other’s cars,” explains Alex. “A few of my relatives have professional auto body experience and we’d often talk about starting our own business. After working for 34 years as a construction equipment operator, I was getting ready to retire and I had the money to purchase a business, so we all decided it was time to make it happen.”

Since founding A-Rod Auto Collision in San Jose in 2016, Alex says the shop continues to be a family operation. “We have everyone in the family here, including my wife, my brother-in-law and some cousins. My son and my nephew are also involved, learning about the business and growing their knowledge and skills.”

When asked how he likes to spend his free time, Alex replies that he’s usually working. “People think I’m crazy because of how much I work. Even on Sundays, I’ll get up and come into the shop to clean and catch up on things.” However, Alex says he does enjoy spending time with his family outside of the shop. “We get together for parties and holidays, and sometimes for no reason at all. As a matter of fact, I was doing some barbecuing the other night, and before long we had 20 people at the house!”

When asked about a professional philosophy, Alex says he’s all about being available for his customers. “About six years ago, I was in a collision, so I took my truck to a local body shop. I went in and approached the estimator, but he didn’t have time to talk to me. Neither did the manager or the owner. It was a pretty lousy experience. Later, as I was preparing to start my business, I told myself that we would always be available for our customers. That’s the way I want our shop to be—I want customers to feel like they can approach us and get taken care of. Whatever their needs or concerns, we will make time for them.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Alex simply replies that he wouldn’t. “Everyone I know who retires goes downhill pretty quickly. You’ve been active all your life and then you sit there, and before too long you’re gone. So, I don’t have any plans to retire at the moment. I don’t want to get too comfortable; I want to stay active. Plus, I enjoy what I do, so why would I stop?”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What was your first car?
A: A Volkswagen Beetle.

Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?
A: An early bird. I get up at 4am every day, even on the weekend.

Q: Are you a dog person or a cat person?
A: A dog person. I’ve had dogs all my life.

Q: What’s your favorite holiday?
A: New Year’s Eve. We get the family together and have a little fiesta.

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: Classic cars. I have a ’57 Chevy Nova, a ’44 Dodge pickup truck and a ’38 Oldsmobile, to name a few.

  • How to Assess a Scratch on Your Vehicle

SAN JOSE — If there’s a scratch on your vehicle’s body, you may assume the area will need to be repainted. However, this may not be the case. Vehicle body scratches often look similar, but their impact can vary substantially depending on how deep they are.

So, how can you tell whether a scratch requires repainting? It’s simple: run your fingernail over it. If you can feel a groove as your nail runs over the scratch, this means it has penetrated the paint and needs to be repainted. However, if you don’t feel any change in texture as your nail runs over the scratch, it likely hasn’t penetrated the paint. In this case, all you need to do is buff it out. You can do this yourself or take it to your local auto body shop. Within minutes, the scratch should be gone.

SAN JOSE — Host, Sarah Rutan: If there’s a scratch on your vehicle’s body, you may assume it needs to be repainted. However, this may not be the case. Today we’re in San Jose with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Alex Rodriguez of A-Rod Auto Collision to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Alex Rodriguez: A lot of customers come up with their problems, they say that the car is scratched up. If you’re running your fingernails, they don’t hang on the scratch, you don’t need no paint or any of that stuff. You can bring it to anywhere to buff it out and they will go away.

We run into a lot of it with the customers, “Oh, my car is scratched up here, can you paint it out?” We don’t need to paint out, we just buff it out and it will be good.
