Comparative Summary

Advanced Instruments Hearing Aid Centers utilizes the gold standard of fitting procedures to ensure the best possible results. Known as Live Speech Mapping, this verification system makes certain that the hearing aids are properly adjusted and calibrated for each individual patient. This unique process uses a tiny microphone placed deep in the ear canal, combined with a pinpoint computer system, to customize the hearing aids to the individual acoustics of each patient’s ears.

While most company’s initial consultations usually run 30-45 minutes, Advanced Instrument sets aside a full two hours if necessary, making sure they get a full picture of each patient’s needs. After the fitting, Advanced Instruments offers counseling services during the hearing aid adjustment phase.

Since not all patients are able to travel to their offices, Advanced Hearing Aid is able to schedule home visits and provide service at a patient’s residence. An extremely customer-oriented company, Advanced Hearing Aid’s trained and friendly office staff will even provide fully insured transportation to their center, if necessary.

Advanced Instruments Hearing Aid Centers:

• Stay up-to-date on all hearing aid software
Why this is important:
One study has shown up to two thirds of new hearing aids are improperly fitted or adjusted. Advanced Instruments’ technologically advanced systems ensure the best possible results.
-It assists and expedites a new client’s hearing aid adjustments or upgrade

• Offers a friendly, comfortable, no-pressure environment
Why this is important:
Resolving hearing issues can be a sensitive and emotional experience, especially for first-time hearing aid users. Advanced Instruments works to create a comfortable, professional, and relaxed environment in which to experience the testing, recommendation and fitting process.

• Offers a three-year warranty on all new hearing aids
Why this is important:
-Hearing aids need periodic office cleaning and adjustments (a patients’ hearing and needs can change over time and the hearing aids can be adjusted to the changing needs of the patient).
-Hearing aids may require repair. If a hearing aid is not right for a patient, or doesn’t work properly, a solution or replacement will be offered within the limits of their warranty.

• Offers a 75-day no-risk evaluation period.
Why this is important:
-California State law requires a 30-day “trial” period for hearing aid fittings. Advanced Instruments exceeds this by providing a generous 75-day no-risk evaluation period. This allows the patient plenty of time to ensure they are getting the benefits of improved hearing and communication that motivated them to come in.

Industry Info

What to look for – and look out for – when choosing a hearing aid center. There are three things do when shopping for a hearing center, says Eric Stratton, owner and operator of Advanced Instruments Hearing Aid Centers in Vacaville and Fairfield. “First, find a location with posted hours and can check their references,” he says. “False claims and incorrect advertising may lead you to believe that they’re something they are not.” Eric recommends checking references online, with a center’s patients, and with doctors in the area.

“Second,” Eric continues, “Avoid any provider that feels high-pressure. If they’re selling you a ‘today-only’ price, that’s a sign they don’t have your best interest at heart. You should never feel rushed or pressured into purchasing anything,” he says.

“Third, make sure it’s a comfortable environment. You should feel welcomed and allowed to bring along a friend or relative with you to discuss your options. It is a profound event when someone is brave enough to walk in and look into hearing aids. It’s a process that should be fully respected.”

Here is a list of questions to consider when choosing a hearing a hearing aid center:

• How long has the business been in operation at that location?
• What are the hours of operation, and are the hours posted?
• Who is the owner? Is the owner local, or out of the state?
• If there is a problem, whom can I talk to?
• How long has the Hearing Aid Dispenser been licensed by the State of California?
• What other certifications and credentials do they have beyond the basic dispensers license? For example, the National Board Certification in Hearing Instrument Sciences; Audiologist with a Masters or PHD; Audioprosthologist, etc.
• How long is the warranty for? Who backs up the warranty (preferably the manufacturing laboratory)? What costs does the warranty cover?
• For how long is the “Loss and Damage” Insurance that comes with the hearing aids? Does the lab back it up? How much is the deductible?
• What do they say the life of a hearing aid is? The national average is 3 ½ – 4 years; hearing aids often last 5 to 8 years.
• Are you being offered hearing aids in a wide variety of models and prices, or just the most expensive ones?
• How long do you have to return the hearing aids for a full refund? State law (the Song Beverly Act) requires a 30-day trial period. Most labs give the dispenser 90 days. Better offices offer 60- to 90-day trial periods. During this period, the hearing aid is 100% refundable.
• Is there a fee for follow-up visits? If not, how long are follow-up visits included at no extra cost?
• Ask what the dispenser can do to help you get used to the hearing aids (sometimes programs for auditory rehabilitation are available).
• How many labs does the office use? Three or more? Or is the dispenser limited to just one or two labs? I would advise working with dispensers that are multi-line, with a wide variety of solutions for the patient’s needs.

Getting fitted with hearing aids is not a one-visit arrangement. There will usually be several visits during the fitting period, and then periodic visits over the years for cleaning, annual testing, and hearing aid adjustments. Therefore you’re well served to work with an office you feel comfortable in, with an office “culture” or ambience that you like.

Find out what protocols the dispenser uses for fittings. Do they use Real Ear Measurement or Live Speech Mapping? These are fitting verification procedures used by good dispensers to assure the hearing aids are properly amplifying speech.

Are you being rushed to make a decision? Are you comfortable working with the dispenser and the office staff? Beware of “today only” pricing, i.e., “If you don’t get it now, the price will go up.” Usually the labs are very consistent in their wholesale pricing, and “today only” discounts are just high-pressure sales gimmicks, created at the retail end. Most labs publish an MSRP list (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price). MSRPs are much higher than hearing aids are actually sold and fit for in the real world.

It is a good idea to bring a spouse or family member when looking for hearing aids. You can use them as a sounding board to discuss the decision with. You can ask the dispenser for a list of patients they have fit for reference purposes.

You can have confidence in your choice of businesses to deal with by using a practice that has been awarded Diamond Certified.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you offer a warranty?

A: Yes, we offer a 3-year warranty on all new hearing aides.

Q: What happens at the initial visit?

A: We encourage you to come with a family member. After some paperwork you will both talk with one of our licensed hearing healthcare professionals. The discussion will include why you came in and what both of you have observed about your hearing. This time is for you to communicate your concerns and get your questions answered. If needed, we will discuss the anatomy of the ear and how hearing works. If you already use hearing aids, they will be cleaned and checked. You will then have a “video otoscopic” visual examination of your ear canals and eardrums. This is a special medical camera that projects the image of your ear canals on a video screen (like a TV screen). You will be able to see if there is anything (such as ear wax) blocking your ear canals. You will then get a standard hearing test, in a booth, with headphones on. This will help determine if you’re hearing in within normal limits, or if you could be helped with hearing aids. The results of the hearing test will be explained to you. Any thoughts or questions you have will be handled. If it appears hearing aids would be helpful, your options will be explained. We have many sets of demonstration hearing aids in the office and can let you hear with them. At this time, we like to have you hear your family members’ familiar voice with the hearing aids turned on. This part in particular is very interesting and a lot of fun! At this point, you decide what you want to do.

Q: What it is like to be fitted with a new hearing aid?

A: It is really a lot of fun. The instruments are adjusted to your comfort level and particular needs. You will hear speech more clearly, as well as many environmental sounds that were below your perception. Your own voice will sound a little different, but should be acceptable. In the first six weeks there are several appointments to monitor your progress and address any concerns. Also, you are taught how your hearing aids work and how to take care of them. We often gets hugs and thanks from family members whose lives are also made easier because their loved ones hear better!

Q: What is an Audioprosthologist?

A: Aside from being a licensed hearing aid dispenser, owner Eric Stratton has earned the advanced Audioprosthologist credential. Audioprosthology is the science, art and study of audio-prosthetics, or hearing aids.

Q: What causes a decrease in hearing clarity?

A: Most hearing loss occurs gradually from exposure to loud or constant noise. It may also be a result of certain illnesses and can also be heredity. Commonly, it is simply an evolution of our physiology over time (in other words, aging). The most common form of hearing loss is sensorineural hearing loss, commonly referred to as nerve loss or nerve deafness. This happens when the inner ear and auditory nerves do not properly transmit their signals to the brain.

Q: How do I know if hearing aids will help me?

A: The American Medical Association concluded that 95% of people with hearing loss would benefit from hearing aids.

Q: Aren’t hearing aids just for old people?

A: Today , there are actually more people between the ages of 45 and 64 who have a hearing loss that those who are age 65 and older. Over the past 20 years, hearing loss in people ages 18 to 45 has increased by more than 26%. By the time Baby Boomers reach 65, more than 40% will have a hearing loss that should be treated.

Q: How can I tell if I have a hearing loss?

A: You can ask yourself the following questions: • Do you often ask others to repeat what was said? • Have family members or friends expressed concern about your hearing? • Do you turn up the TV or radio louder than others prefer? • Is it particularly difficult to understand conversation when there is background noise? • Does it seem as though others are mumbling when they speak to you? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you can benefit from a personal hearing evaluation from a licensed professional.

Q: What is the cost of a hearing evaluation and consultation?

A: At our offices we offer a complimentary hearing evaluation and consultation that is designed to determine if you could benefit from hearing aids.

Q: How much do hearing aids cost?

A: Most people require two of them. In 2008, across the U.S., the average price of a set of hearing aids was approximately $4,400. We are licensed and contracted to fit hearing aids from over 10 different laboratories. Hearing aids are available in various levels of technology, ranging from simple entry level, through mid-range technology, to very advanced levels of technology. We will work with your needs and budget to provide you with what you deem is best for you.

Q: I know someone who has hearing aids and never uses them. What if I don’t like them?

A: In our offices we allow a 75-day evaluation period for you to determine if they are satisfying your particular needs. You will get a full refund if you decide to return them during this period. The major ingredients for a successful outcome using hearing aids are:• Good quality hearing aids that are suitable for your needs • An office staff that has the tools, knowledge, experience, and the care factor to do an excellent job for you • A motivated patient who wants to hear better • A comprehensive guarantee. Most of our hearing aids come with a 3-year guarantee, which includes all office services

Q: Aren’t hearing aids large, ugly, and really noticeable?

A: Today, hearing aids are smaller and more sophisticated than ever. Some are so small and so effective, even you won’t realize you’re wearing them. Nor will anyone else.

Q: I have ringing in my ears, what’s that?

A: It is called tinnitus. More than 50 million Americans have it. It is a ringing, hissing or roaring in the ears when no external sound is present. It frequently causes depression and anxiety, and can be debilitating. There is usually no cure for tinnitus, but it can be managed with a great deal of success. People with it may or may not also have a hearing loss. Our offices offer solutions to help with this.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Eric Stratton

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Eric Stratton: Auditory Restoration

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

VACAVILLE — With a background in both communications and electronics, it’s no surprise that Eric Stratton found a career in audiology to be a perfect fit. “At the time I became interested in audiology, I was working on life safety systems in San Francisco—hauling around a ladder and a tool belt, climbing up high rises, and servicing elevators and fire alarm systems,” he remembers. “I found audiology very appealing because it involved electronics and improved the lives of others. Plus, hearing aids were a lot less heavy to lift than the materials I was working with!”

Today, as owner of Advanced Instruments Hearing Aid Center, Eric says his favorite part of his job is impacting people’s lives by restoring their hearing. “Hearing loss can be quite debilitating, which makes the change that much more significant when it gets corrected. When a family has become used to someone being the ‘weak link’ in the chain of communication, they’re amazed at the transformation that occurs when that person can suddenly hear what they’re saying. It truly reanimates them and enables them to go from being mere spectators to participants in the family’s social life, and that’s something I find really rewarding.”

Originally from Southern California, Eric attended college in San Francisco and later settled in Vacaville, where he now lives with his wife, Mariette, and their son, Tyler. He expresses an appreciation for the altruistic attitude that characterizes Solano County. “I read that Solano County has one of the highest percentages per capita of people who give to charities, whether churches or nonprofit organizations. I like the fact that I get to live in such a giving community.”

Outside of work, Eric spends much of his time outdoors, whether hiking or just relaxing in his own backyard. “I enjoy the world of plants and animals, which is why I like hiking through remote areas like the Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness,” he says. “I’m also interested in horticulture, and since I live in the country, I have the opportunity to pursue that in my spare time. In addition to gardening, I recently purchased a couple of beehives in hopes of encouraging the dwindling bee population.”

In his life and career, Eric applies a maxim coined by Abraham Lincoln: ‘Whatever you are, be a good one.’ “I want to be the best at what I do, which is why I’m constantly looking for ways to improve,” he explains. “The Diamond Certified rating is a good example of that. I know of other businesses in town that are Diamond Certified, and they’re all top-notch companies run by wonderful people, so I’m proud to be part of that circle.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Eric says he’d devote more effort toward his horticultural pursuits. “I’d probably spend more time gardening and cultivating my yard. When you have a few acres of plants and trees that need tending, it’s a lot of work, so that would definitely keep me busy.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: Ever read a book more than once?
A: “Galaxies like Grains of Sand” by Brian Aldiss, which I read several times when I was a boy.

Q: Do you consider yourself a dog person or a cat person?
A: Both—I like dogs and cats alike.

Q: What’s your earliest memory?
A: Learning how to walk. I remember it feeling like a big win when I didn’t fall—I just kept on stumbling forward until I got where I wanted to go.

Q: What’s the strangest food you’ve ever eaten?
A: Grasshoppers.

Q: What’s your favorite snack?
A: Fresh Bing cherries.

  • The Secondary Effects of Hearing Loss

VACAVILLE — Since hearing loss is a gradual regression, most people who experience it fail to notice the symptoms. In fact, it’s common for those with hearing loss to be in denial about it, blaming their communication issues on the assertion that other people don’t speak clearly or loudly enough.

This highlights one of the great complicating factors of hearing loss: our use of language to communicate. Due to the complexity of verbal interaction (including the wide variety of tonal inflections), sufficient hearing is just as important as clear articulation. If someone speaks to you and you misunderstand even a single word, it can throw off your understanding of the whole conversation. In this regard, while deficient hearing leads to the obvious symptom of having to ask others to repeat themselves, there are several secondary symptoms as well. Some of these include increased irritability, greater incidence of misunderstandings and arguments, increased mental absence, and reduced social engagement.

Considering these secondary symptoms, it’s easy to see how hearing loss can have a detrimental effect on people’s ability to communicate and, by extension, their relationships and social lives. So, if you think you may be experiencing the symptoms of hearing loss, it’s crucial to do something about it sooner than later.

  • Video: Dealing With Hearing Loss

    Complete Video Transcription

VACAVILLE — Host, Sarah Rutan: In most cases, hearing loss can be a slow and gradual process, which is why it is important to heed the signs and seek preventive treatment. Today, we’re in Vacaville with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Eric Stratton of Advanced Instruments Hearing Aid Center to learn about some of the common symptoms to be aware of.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Eric Stratton: Hearing loss is very gradual. When people come into my office for a hearing test for the first time, they have this question in their head, “Is there really anything wrong with my hearing? I don’t think there is, I hear just fine. I mean, if people wouldn’t turn their heads around when they’re talking to me I can hear them a lot of better. And they don’t pronounce as well as they used to, but I’m doing fine with my hearing.” And then on the other hand, the family member says, oh, you know, my husband or my wife or my parents, they don’t hear well at all. I keep on having to repeat myself.

Some of the common signs of hearing loss are do people have to repeat themselves? Do you have to say “huh” or “what” very much? Is the television on too loud? Just common, everyday problems like that could indicate that you’re not hearing everything very well. It’s a very gradual process. I often point out to folks when they come in that if they went to bed the night before with normal hearing and then woke up with the hearing that I’m testing them with, they would really notice the difference. But it had been a five-year process, just a slow amount every day so you don’t notice the difference.

One of the problems with dealing with this is that we use language to communicate, and language has a lot of very interesting tones and sounds to pronounce the words. If somebody is speaking to you and you just misunderstand one word in a sentence because you couldn’t quite hear clear enough, it can throw off the understanding of the whole sentence. Doing something about it will really make a big improvement in your communications, your affinity for your family members, how much they like you, and cause a lot less trouble in the future. So, I think it’s a good idea to do something about it.
