Professional, the owners are working owners who came out and inspected the sight and job that was completed. I was surprised by the level of service that they provided, and I mean that in a good way.

The did everything they said they were going to do and solved other problems that I had. By them doing that, I ended up saving a lot of money.

It was an easy process from start to finish. They were very professional. I had an issue with door, and they came out to see it. They felt uncomfortable about an issue that the door had, so they called the manufacture to solve the issue. While fixing my door, they kept everything neat.

I really enjoyed working with Jeff. It was great when he came out to check up.

Jeff (L) and John Alexander are owners of Alexander Company.

Alexander Company installs replacement windows and doors for residential clients in San Mateo County and San Francisco. In addition to its professional installation capabilities, the family-owned and operated company maintains a large showroom in Burlingame that carries a wide variety of products, including vinyl, aluminum, wood and fiberglass windows made by leading manufacturers such as Simonton, Marvin, Anderson, and Milgard.

Owners John and Jeff Alexander are second-generation proprietors of Alexander Company—their father established the business in 1971 and taught them everything he knew about installation, sales, and management before retiring two decades ago. "This company has a reputation for working with integrity and quality, and my brother and I work hard to uphold that," says Jeff Alexander. "We stand behind our products on both the installation and sales sides, and we always keep up-to-date with industry standards and trends."

Alexander Company's partnerships with the window industry's top manufacturers allow it to act as both the dealer and contractor on its clients' projects, which ultimately saves time and money. "This is a one-stop shop—instead of purchasing windows and hiring a subcontractor to install them, our customers know they can trust us to handle everything ourselves," says Mr. Alexander. Comparative Summary

Few window companies earn the prestigious Diamond Certified award, which means they’ve been independently rated Highest in Quality. Even fewer can also claim more than 40 years of industry experience, but that’s exactly the case for Alexander Company. According to co-owner Jeff Alexander, this longevity is important for providing customers with peace of mind and ensuring their satisfaction throughout every step of their window projects. “We often visit homes to repair problems caused by other companies that are no longer in business,” he explains. “Our customers don’t have to worry about that with us–they know we’ll still be here if they ever have an issue in the future.”

Alexander Company installs all types of replacement windows and doors for residential clients in San Mateo County and San Francisco. In addition to its professional installation capabilities, the family-owned and operated company maintains a large showroom in Burlingame that carries a wide variety of products, including vinyl, fiberglass, wood and aluminum windows made by leading manufacturers such as Milgard, Simonton, Marvin, Andersen and Integrity.

Unlike less experienced window companies that focus solely on selling products and rely on subcontractors to perform installation work, Alexander Company utilizes its in-house staff of professional installers to handle every phase of its clients’ window projects. “Whether it’s retrofit or new construction, we do all the installation work ourselves, which saves our customers time and money,” says Mr. Alexander. “We also do all our own framing, trimming and stucco work. Our customers appreciate having everything under one roof.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Alexander Company is its comprehensive approach to quality control, which includes emphasizing safety and industry innovation on a continuous basis. “Quality control is very important to us, so we conduct weekly installation and safety meetings to update our staff on cutting-edge installation methods and products,” says Mr. Alexander. “Our goal is to always be at the forefront of what’s coming into the market without disregarding what has worked well in the past.”

Industry Info

If you’re considering replacing your windows, consider the advantages of dual pane products. The most substantial benefit of dual pane windows is their ability to provide superior insulation, which in turn increases energy efficiency throughout a home. The energy savings alone often make it a worthwhile investment to have your old, single pane windows replaced with double pane windows, but there are numerous other benefits that most people aren’t even aware of.

One of these benefits is the reduction of condensation throughout the home, which is a byproduct of dual pane windows’ superior insulation. The tightness of a dual pane window inhibits moisture from entering the home, which introduces practical health benefits such as decreasing the prevalence of seasonal illness and the accumulation of latent mold.

Dual pane windows are also effective at reducing outside noise. “Many times, that’s the first thing people notice,” says Jeff Alexander, co-owner of Alexander Company in Burlingame. “If you live in an area where outside noise is a bothersome issue, dual pane windows can really enhance the serenity of your home environment.”

Lesser known attributes of double pane windows include the addition of UV coating and argon gas filling, both of which constitute what’s known as “low emittance,” or low-E. “Today, all double pane windows are required by code to have a UV coating,” says Mr. Alexander. “UV coatings cut out a lot of the heat gain from the exterior as well as heat loss from the interior, and they significantly reduce potential UV damage to furniture and draperies. Some people think the coating is going to darken their windows, but it’s usually effective enough to not require a tint, although that option is available if you want to cut out a bit more light or have more privacy.”

The process for argon gas filling is as follows: The space between the glass panes (formerly filled with air) is filled with argon or krypton gas, both of which are nontoxic, nonreactive, clear, odorless substances. The space is filled with gas and not air because gas is denser and thus less conductive of heat, which makes double pane windows even more effective barriers between the exterior and interior of a home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How soon can you start my project, and how long will it take to complete?

A: We typically start a project four weeks after the initial order. The duration of a job varies depending on size—we can finish most jobs in one or two days, but it could take up to a week if it’s a large project.

Q: Do I need to get a permit or schedule an inspection for my window project?

A: Permits are required in many cases, but we’ll take care of that whole process, from pulling the permits to ensuring everything is up to code. We can also coordinate with the city to schedule an inspection if necessary.

Q: Will I need paint work done after my windows are installed?

A: It depends on the nature of the installation. Most retrofit installations don’t require painting, but if they do, we can recommend some good companies.

Q: Is your work factory-authorized and certified?

A: We always work toward the standards that the product manufacturers recommend. We’re also one of the few authorized installation dealers for industry leader Marvin.

Q: Why should I choose you over a lower bidder?

A: If you compare our estimates to other companies, we’re typically either in the middle or on the high end. The price of a window project tends to have a direct effect on the end result, from the products that are chosen to the quality of the installation itself. With that in mind, we believe our pricing is very fair and competitive. We’re going to do the job properly, and we’ll be there for our customers if they ever have an issue down the line.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Jeff Alexander

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Jeff Alexander is second-generation owner of Alexander Company, a Diamond Certified company since 2012. He can be reached at (650) 525-4171 or by email.

Jeff Alexander: A Clear Opportunity

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

BURLINGAME — Long before he was second-generation owner, Jeff Alexander could see the clear opportunity his family’s window contracting business represented. “My dad started Alexander Company in 1971, and my brother, John, and I started getting involved as teenagers,” he recounts. “At first, we were helping in the field, but we gradually moved into sales and management. As the company continued to grow, we both saw a lot of opportunity for the future and decided to stick with it. Today, we’re second-generation owners, and since we both have kids who work for the business, we’re looking at possibly a third generation.”

After four decades in the business, Jeff says he still enjoys the simple satisfaction that comes from seeing the results of his work. “I like the transformation that occurs as we take a project from start to finish. It’s very satisfying to see how our work improves a home’s appearance and enhances the homeowner’s view.”

A resident of the San Francisco Peninsula, Jeff expresses his appreciation for work and life in the Bay Area. “I can’t think of a better place to live and work. Besides the nice weather, there’s a lot of opportunity here, which has helped us build a good customer base over the years.”

Outside of work, Jeff spends his time on a variety of active pastimes. “I enjoy playing golf and going to professional sporting events. Besides being a Giants and 49ers fan, I’ve jumped on the Golden State Warriors bandwagon in the last couple of years, as a lot of other people have.” Jeff also likes getting out and about with his wife, Rosie, and exploring San Francisco, the Wine Country and other parts of the Bay Area.

In regard to a professional philosophy, Jeff emphasizes the importance of integrity. “Our aim is to supply our customers with honest, professional service and run our business with integrity,” he affirms. “Basically, we try to treat our customers the same way we’d want to be treated.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Jeff says he’d head to a tropical locale. “I would probably take a trip to Hawaii and just take a couple of weeks to rest and regenerate. After all, what better way to decompress than by relaxing on a beach?”

Ask Me Anything!

A: Waterfront Restaurant in San Francisco.

A: Summer—I enjoy the warm weather and long days.

A: It depends on what I’m doing. When I’m running around during the day, I usually listen to sports talk radio, but when I’m home on the weekends, I like listening to music.

Q: What was your favorite toy as a child?
A: My bicycle.

Q: What do you like on your pizza?
