Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for kitchen and bath showrooms that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Amarant Design & Build, the best way to keep customers satisfied is to focus on setting, meeting and exceeding their expectations, regardless of the size of their projects. “We establish expectations for our clients early in the process and always meet those expectations,” affirms owner Scott Amarant. “We carry every project all the way from concept to completion, and that includes providing a workmanship warranty and follow-up service that we feel are unmatched in the industry.”

Amarant Design & Build has been providing all types of appliances, decorative plumbing and decorative hardware at its Dublin showroom since 1978. As a full-service design studio, the company has direct access to products made by industry-leading manufacturers like Toto, Kohler and Grohe, and it also has the in-house capabilities to perform residential and commercial installations throughout the East Bay.

Unlike design/build companies that lack experience with certain aspects of remodeling and are forced to limit their services as a result, Amarant Design & Build has the training and equipment to handle projects of any size. “A lot of companies’ capabilities end at kitchen and bathroom remodeling, but we’re able to do things on a much larger scale,” says Mr. Amarant. “For example, we can build an entire house from the ground up, all while applying the same efficient, organized approach as we do in our smaller projects.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Amarant Design & Build is its streamlined approach to communication and job execution. “We give our clients one point of contact, so whenever they have questions or concerns, they only have to call one person,” explains Mr. Amarant. “In terms of the work itself, we handle every step of the process and maintain accountability for the entire project. That way, our clients don’t have to worry about any finger-pointing if something goes wrong.”

Industry Info

If you’re thinking about remodeling your kitchen, make sure you’re aware of cutting-edge material and appliance options. Things are constantly changing in the construction and remodeling industry, with new, innovative products and technologies being developed all the time. So, if you’re planning a kitchen remodel, don’t underestimate the importance of staying up-to-date on the various options that are available to you.

Dekton countertops
One of the latest countertop materials on the market, Dekton is an engineered stone product that’s made by Cosentino, which is the same company that developed Silestone. “Dekton is similar to porcelain in character, but it has an incredibly high density,” says Scott Amarant, owner of Amarant Design & Build in Dublin. “You can’t scratch or stain it. You can even take a hammer to it and it won’t chip. That’s not to say it’s indestructible, but it’s the closest thing to it.”

Dekton was initially developed to be a siding for high-rise buildings, but Cosentino got the idea of applying colors and patterns to it and using it for countertops. Now, homeowners have the opportunity to get one of the most durable and low-maintenance countertop materials on the market.

Galley Workstation sinks
Sometimes called “the Swiss Army knife of kitchen sinks,” the Galley Workstation sink is revolutionizing the way homeowners utilize their kitchens. “The body of a Galley is a two-tiered stainless steel liner, so when it’s not in use, it can be covered with cutting boards to create additional counter space,” explains Mr. Amarant. “When in use, the sink’s double-tiered design allows you to slide accessories like bowls and strainers beneath surface components like cutting boards, which makes it easy to maneuver between various tasks and functions. You can even get a portable induction burner, which will allow you to cook at your sink as well.”

Steam ovens
“This is another product that’s growing in popularity with homeowners,” says Mr. Amarant. “Cooking with steam not only retains flavors better than traditional oven or stovetop cooking, it also retains more of the nutrients in food, so it’s a healthier way to cook. You can even use a steam oven to do small-scale baking and roasting.” In order to accommodate a variety of needs and tastes, some manufacturers are now making combination conventional oven and steam oven appliances, so discerning homeowners can get the best of both worlds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much will it cost to complete my remodeling project?

A: The cost of your project will primarily depend on your tastes. Doing a home remodeling project is a lot like buying a car: you can either get a little Fiat for $15,000 or spend $350,000 at a Bentley dealership. In the same way, the base price for a small kitchen remodel is typically in the $35,000 range, but depending on what types of materials and appliances you want, that same kitchen can easily exceed $70,000. It’s primarily the finishes that determine the overall price, not the labor, so it will depend on the level of quality you’re looking for.

Q: Do you use quality products?

A: Always. Every product we carry in our showroom comes with a lifetime warranty. We don’t bother with products that aren’t going to last a long time.

Q: How long will it take to complete my project?

A: It depends on the scope of the work. For example, an average kitchen remodel takes three to four weeks to complete, but if we’re doing a lot of structural work and moving things around, it could take up to three months. Once we determine the scope of the work, we’ll put the schedule in writing and commit to meeting those dates.

Q: Do you use subcontractors?

A: It depends on the size of the project. For smaller projects, we typically keep everything in-house. Our technicians are trained in all aspects of construction, from plumbing and electrical to painting and finish work, so we usually don’t need subcontractors. However, if we’re doing a large project like building a home, we’ll bring in subcontractors to keep the price competitive and complete the job in a timely manner.

Q: What’s your process for initiating new clients?

A: When a client decides they want to work with us, we schedule two meetings with them. The first is at our showroom, where we break down the good, better and best product options for their project. The second meeting is at the client’s home. At that point, since we have an idea of the products and materials the client wants, we can look at the jobsite, answer questions and put together an accurate estimate.

Scott Amarant: Building Perspective

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

DUBLIN — After 40 years as a building contractor, Scott Amarant traces his track record of success and innovation back to a simple adolescent interest. “I’ve been building since I was very young,” he affirms. “In addition to the construction side, I had a strong desire to participate in design. I drew my first set of line drawings when I was 11 years old. While my friends were reading comic books, I was reading about floor plans!”

Later, during his first couple of decades as a building professional, Scott worked in a consecutive series of capacities, from building decks for a hot tub manufacturer to constructing custom homes for property developers. Eventually, he came upon an innovative opportunity. “In the remodeling industry, I saw the concept of the showroom being overlooked,” he explains. “With this in mind, I focused on developing a new business model: the ‘design and build showroom.’ The main idea was to collaborate and build relationships with professionals from various sides of the industry. This approach worked well for us, and we continue to use it in our showroom today.”

As owner of Amarant Design & Build, Scott says his favorite part of his job is bringing out the best in people. “Within the last few years, I’ve come to realize the responsibility I have to both my customers and employees. I’ve enjoyed renewing my understanding of those relationships, which has given me a fresh perspective on how to bring out the best in the people who work for me.”

A lifetime resident of the San Ramon Valley area (where he lives with his wife, Dena), Scott expresses his appreciation for the Bay Area’s all-inclusiveness. “My wife and I have been all over the United States, from Santa Fe to Seattle to Maui. Every place was wonderful in its own way, but it wasn’t all-inclusive—it didn’t have everything. In contrast, here in the Bay Area, we have everything you could possibly want to do. I mean, where else can you go skiing and golfing in the same weekend?”

Outside of work, Scott likes to stay active, both physically and in his local community. “My wife and I are avid golfers, but we’re also active in our community, helping with charities and nonprofit organizations,” he affirms. “We also like traveling around the Bay Area, going wine tasting and attending various events.” Additionally, Scott enjoys spending time with family and friends, including his two adult sons, Jason and Jesse.

In his life and career, Scott espouses the virtue of maintaining a positive perspective. “I was fortunate to have an experience early on that taught me life is what we make it,” he explains. “In the end, how we perceive and act on the opportunities that present themselves will determine the way we go. Through it all, I’ve found it’s best to stay positive, always look for the best in people and understand that, even in difficult times, there’s an opportunity to gain greater wisdom and understanding.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Scott replies simply that he wouldn’t. “I actually had an exit plan in place, and we were moving toward that when it dawned on me: ‘What am I going to do with myself?’ I truly love my work, so I’ll probably always keep a hand in it and continue sharing in the successes of our clients and team members. I imagine I’ll eventually start to slow down as I get older…but maybe people will be polite enough not to tell me.”

  • Plumbing Tip for a Kitchen Remodel

DUBLIN — When planning for a kitchen remodel, one aspect to consider is the location of plumbing fixtures such as water shut-off valves, which control the delivery of water to fixtures like the faucet, dishwasher and refrigerator. In most cases, the shut-off valve for the dishwasher and refrigerator is situated behind the refrigerator, but if you’re redesigning your kitchen, you should consider adding another valve for these appliances, located under the sink or in a similarly accessible area.

An additional shut-off valve is a good idea because if your dishwasher or refrigerator starts leaking, you can simply reach under the sink and turn off the valve instead of pulling out the refrigerator, which can be difficult and time-consuming. In this way, an additional water shut-off valve can help you minimize water damage caused by a leakage emergency.

  • Video: Plumbing Tip for a Kitchen Remodel

    Complete Video Transcription

DUBLIN — Host, Sarah Rutan: When it comes to remodeling a kitchen, one seemingly minor detail can make a big difference later on. Today we’re in Dublin with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Scott Amarant of Amarant Design & Build to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Scott Amarant: I’m here today to give you some ideas about planning out your kitchen. A lot of folks are familiar with the plumbing that’s underneath the sink. There are shut-off valves there sometimes for the water dispenser, for the faucet, hot and cold. And oftentimes when a kitchen is planned and laid out, the shut-off valve is put behind the refrigerator. And this is a good thing to have because when you service and you pull it out you can turn that off there and you can disconnect it.

One additional valve should be installed for both the refrigerator and for the dishwasher so that if at any time you were to come into your kitchen and you would find water coming from the bottom of your dishwasher or perhaps from the refrigerator, you could simply reach underneath the sink and turn the valve off. So, by providing an additional valve for both the dishwasher and the refrigerator, you provide the ability for even a child to go in and be able to turn that off, not having to struggle with and pulling out a refrigerator or trying to in some way fight the water.
