Sam Anderson: An Unexpected Opportunity
By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter
PLEASANTON — Looking back on his plumbing career, Sam Anderson recounts how he entered the field through an unexpected (and serendipitously timed) opportunity. “I had just been laid off from my job working in a warehouse and was thinking about joining the army,” he remembers. “I was actually walking into the recruitment office when I got a phone call from my friend’s dad. He owned a plumbing business and he offered me an apprenticeship with his company. I didn’t know anything about plumbing, but I decided to take the offer. It ended up being a good fit. After I completed my apprenticeship, I wanted to keep learning, so I went on to get my license.”
In 2020, Sam started his own plumbing business. Today, as owner of Anderson Plumbing, he says his favorite part of his job is coming to his customers’ rescue. “I’ve always enjoyed the opportunity to help people out of tough situations. When your plumbing system isn’t working, it can really disrupt your daily life, so I like being able to fix my customers’ problems and get them back on track.”
A resident of Pleasanton, Sam spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “I have two daughters, so when I’m not working, I’m usually spending time with them,” he says. “They like going to the park, swimming and other fun activities. My daughters are my world, so I’m just trying to set them up for a good life.” As far as personal hobbies go, Sam expresses his passion for playing music. “I play guitar and piano and I’ve played in a few bands. Music is a huge outlet for me—it has always been a good way for me to express myself and meet people.”
In regard to his professional career, Sam believes in the value of educating customers. “Many people just don’t have a good understanding of their plumbing systems,” he says. “That’s why I try to give my customers plenty of information and advice. I like bringing them up to speed and explaining how I’m able to fix their plumbing problems. That way, they get an understanding of what I’m doing and know they aren’t being taken advantage of.”
