Comparative Summary

Few appliance showrooms earn the prestigious Diamond Certified award, which means they’ve been independently rated Highest in Quality and Helpful Expertise. Even fewer can also claim more than 70 years of industry experience, but that’s exactly the case for Asien’s Appliance, Inc. “We’ve lasted so long because we genuinely care about every customer, sale and installation,” says owner Bob Patterson. “Our salespeople are involved beyond just the sale, and since most of our business comes from referrals, everyone who works here is focused on ensuring our customers are happy and get exactly what they expect.”

Asien’s Appliance provides a variety of appliance services at its Santa Rosa showroom, including sales, delivery/installation, service and repair, extended warranties, and Brand Source financing. The company also offers in-home appliance service and repair services to customers throughout Sonoma County, and it’s qualified to work on a wide range of leading brands, including KitchenAid, Maytag, General Electric, Hotpoint, Viking and Sub Zero.

Unlike less experienced appliance stores that focus entirely on selling products and rely on subcontractors to perform installation work, Asien’s Appliance utilizes its staff of expert installers and sizeable fleet of service vans to handle every step of the appliance installation process for its customers. “We have five fully stocked vans, which is more than any other appliance showroom and ultimately gives us more control over our delivery time frames,” says Mr. Patterson. “Also, the fact that we use our own employees for installation jobs means we’re able to provide better quality control.”

Indeed, Asien’s Appliance’s comprehensive approach to quality control is one of its most distinguishing attributes. “We take our time and focus on the service aspect of the job,” says Mr. Patterson. “From removing the tape inside refrigerators and wiping them down so the stainless steel looks good to slimming appliances into holes and taking all packing materials with us when we go, we’re all about offering quality service.”

Industry Info

When looking to purchase a refrigerator, make sure you consider all your options.

Household appliance designs have undergone numerous changes in the last couple decades, especially when it comes to refrigerators. Only 10 years ago, refrigerators with side freezers were popular choices, but that trend has already gone out of style. “The main problem with side-by-side refrigerators and freezers is each section is tall and not very wide, so you can’t store platters and large food items,” says Bob Patterson, owner of Asien’s Appliance, Inc. in Santa Rosa. “Today, most refrigerators are sold with the freezer units at the bottom. Fresh food is higher up and more easily accessible, and the freezers come with sliding baskets and removable bottom drawers. It’s just a better, more practical design.”

Modern refrigerators also come with door options (single or French) that give homeowners a variety of options when it comes to appliance placement. “French doors require less space to open, which means they’re convenient if you have a small kitchen,” explains Mr. Patterson. “Single door refrigerators need a lot of space in front of them, but French door refrigerators don’t have that issue.”

Here are some other recent trends in refrigerator design:

Built-in beverage center. This extra space by the refrigerator door uses cold air from the freezer to chill beverages.

Fridge drawers. These are designed to expand space for refrigerated items, but their versatility allows them to be installed anywhere in a kitchen, and they come with special features like fruit baskets and wine holders.

Dry-erase door panels. These are good options for homeowners with children. The panels are covered top to bottom with a white, dry-erase surface that allows for easy writing and erasing.

Removable digital frames. These allow you to display photos without using magnets and feature “Fast Fill” technology that ensures a cool exterior. The interchangeable interface lets you plug in a DVD/CD player, digital photo album or MP3 player.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you deliver and install the appliances you sell?
A: Yes. We offer delivery and installation services Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm. Every person on our installation crew is certified by the manufacturers of the products we sell.

Q: What kind of time window do you give for deliveries?
A: We give a four-hour window, plus we have a ‘first delivery’ option, which means you’re guaranteed to be the first delivery of the day. For later deliveries, we’ll always meet that four-hour window, but the exact time will depend on the progress of earlier deliveries. Regardless, we’ll always call 15 minutes before arriving so you know when to expect us.

Q: Can you remove my old appliance after installing the new one?
A: Yes, appliance removal is included in our regular delivery service.

Q: Are you available for emergencies?
A: Unfortunately, no. If you have a problem with an appliance, we can schedule you for the next available service window. If it’s a refrigerator, we’ll do everything we can to get there that same day, but we can’t guarantee it.

Q: Can you convert electrical appliances to natural gas or propane?
A: Yes. Many of the higher-end appliances we sell have natural gas or propane models, but we can also convert an appliance if that’s the only option.

Richard Landen: A Life of Learning

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SANTA ROSA — After growing weary of the rigors of upper management, Richard Landen decided to reroute his professional path. Nearly three decades later, he has no regrets about his choice. “I used to be a manager at Circuit City, back when that store was still in business,” he recounts. “They kept moving me from one store to another, and I finally got tired of it, so I decided to get out of management and go into a different department. I ended up transferring to the appliance sales department—that was in 1991, and I’ve been selling appliances ever since. I’ve been working at Asien’s Appliance since 2003.”

When asked about his favorite part of his job, Richard says it’s helping customers. “I have a lot of fun helping customers find what they’re looking for and working with them to complete their kitchens. Typically, they come in with rough ideas of what they want, and I basically get to fine-tune those ideas and help them find products that will meet their needs.”

A resident of Windsor (where he lives with his wife, Julie), Richard spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “Julie and I enjoy getting out and having a good time, whether it’s going to a San Francisco Giants game or going kayaking at Lake Sonoma,” he details. “We also like working on home projects together and spending time with our three grown children.”

In regard to a personal philosophy, Richard says he’s a big proponent of lifelong learning. “I learn something new every day. I’ve always told my kids, ‘Every morning when I get up, I know I’m going to learn something new that day.’ I don’t know everything, nor do I want to know everything, but I enjoy the fact that I get to keep learning and growing all the time.”

  • The Importance of Appliance Specifications

SANTA ROSA — When buying a kitchen appliance, it’s important to consider the specifications or “specs.” These include the appliance’s basic size dimensions, the types of power/water hookups it uses and the amount of power it requires. Each of these specifications is crucial to the installation of your appliance—if even one of them isn’t correct, it can cause major issues.

Say, for example, you’re buying a new range oven. First, you need to make sure its dimensions will fit within the allotted space. Keep in mind that you need to consider both its length and width—even if it fits widthwise into the space, if it’s too long, it may stick out too far forward from the counter. Next, you need to consider the range’s utility connections (is it gas or electric?) and make sure these connections are present and properly situated in the installation space. Additionally, you need to verify that your kitchen’s existing utility connections are able to provide the amount of power the appliance requires.

If you find an appliance you’re interested in buying, ask the sales representative for a print-out of its specifications. You can take this home (or, if applicable, give it to your remodeling contractor) and use it to verify that the appliance is compatible with your kitchen’s layout and utility connections. If there are compatibility issues, you may need to make alterations to your kitchen’s layout or utilities; in some cases, you may just need to choose a different appliance. In any case, knowing the appliance’s specifications ahead of time will help you ensure a wise purchase and a smooth installation.

SANTA ROSA — Host, Sarah Rutan: A critical aspect of buying a new appliance is determining its installation specifications. Today we’re in Santa Rosa with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Richard Landen of Asien’s Appliance to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Richard Landen: When purchasing an appliance, it’s extremely important to talk about specs. Specs will determine what will fit, what we can do and can’t do, where the electrical is positioned at, where the gas is position at; if even one of those isn’t correct, it can cause major issues when we go out to deliver it. So this is what we want to prevent in the very beginning.

Say, for example, when you buy a range. Range we need to know how wide it is. We also need to know where the electrical is at or where the gas is located at. Measure your space. Do you have enough width for it? Also, is the gas line in the right location for the new range you want to buy? Or is the electrical in the right position? If not, then you can have somebody come out and move them. That way when we come out, we can be able to pull your old product out, put your new product in, and everything goes smoothly. What we’re trying to prevent is any inconvenience to you. So by preparing ahead of time, then you know and we know that you’re ready.

Jeff Teal: Applied Expertise

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SANTA ROSA — After nearly 30 years in appliance sales, it wouldn’t be a stretch to call Jeff Teal an expert in his field. “I’ve been selling appliances since 1991,” he affirms. “I started at Sears and worked at several different companies from there, eventually landing at Asien’s Appliance. I’ve been doing this for so long that it’s basically second nature. Besides being a people person, I know just about everything there is to know about appliances, so I’m able to answer most customers’ questions off the top of my head. Occasionally, I’ll get a question that I have to look up the answer to, but I don’t get stumped very often.”

Today, as a sales associate at Asien’s Appliance, Inc., Jeff says his favorite part of his job is educating customers. “I really enjoy helping people complete their kitchen projects. As a sales associate, I believe my job is less about selling the customer on an appliance and more about educating them so they can make an informed decision for themselves.”

A resident of Santa Rosa (where he lives with his wife, Tina), Jeff spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “I’ve been doing martial arts since 1978 and I continue to train and teach—mainly Danzan-ryū jujitsu,” he details. “I also volunteer with my youngest daughter, Hannah, at a local farm animal rescue organization called Goatlandia. We help with things like feeding the animals and cleaning their pens. For me, it’s both a chance to give back to the community and bond with my daughter.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Jeff says he’s all about straightforward service. “I’m a consumer as well as a salesperson, so I know what it’s like to be in the customer’s shoes. That’s why I don’t waste my customers’ time or try to coax them into buying certain appliances; instead, I try to be straightforward and just give them the facts. I also make it a point to ask questions and find out what they’re looking for so I can steer them in the right direction. That way, they feel heard and empowered to make the choice for themselves instead of feeling like they were coerced into buying something.”

  • The Benefits of an Induction Range

SANTA ROSA — Induction ranges have become an increasingly popular appliance option in recent years. What makes an induction range unique is its use of electromagnetic energy for cooking. Unlike thermal conduction, which heats cookware externally, induction utilizes electromagnetism to create heat energy inside the cooking vessel itself. This approach to cooking offers a couple of significant benefits:

    Performance

Not only do induction ranges cook faster than traditional ranges, they also respond much more quickly to adjustments. For example, you can boil water within 90 seconds and then bring it down to a simmer almost immediately. This fast, precise performance has made induction ranges attractive options for cooking enthusiasts.

    Energy efficiency

Although they require more amperage than traditional ranges, induction ranges are actually less expensive to operate. That’s because induction cooking minimizes energy loss, which makes it both a budget-friendly and eco-friendly option.

One important note about induction ranges: Because they rely on electromagnetic technology, they require magnetic cookware. Most metal cookware pots and pans should be compatible, but you’ll want to verify that before switching to an induction range.

SANTA ROSA — Host, Sarah Rutan: More and more homeowners are switching to induction ranges, and it’s no surprise why. Today we’re in Santa Rosa with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Jeff Teal of Asien’s Appliance to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Jeff Teal: Hello. Today I’d like to talk a little bit about induction cooking. Induction cooking is relatively new, but it gives you a lot better performance than electric. For those customers who are used to cooking with gas and having that instant adjustability of the flame, induction gives you even more power, quicker boiling times and whatnot than gas. It gives you a good, viable, green alternative if you choose to do solar or run off electric because it is so efficient.

You do need to use special pots and pans. Since it cooks with magnetics, you do need pots and pans that can accept the magnetism. In that case, it works wonderfully well. It’s a very good alternative to gas in keeping with the environment and less emissions and whatnot. So, it’s becoming very popular.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Eric Pemberton

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Eric Pemberton is a sales associate at Asien’s Appliance, Inc., a Diamond Certified company since 2002. He can be reached at (707) 874-8923 or by email.

Eric Pemberton: A New Challenge

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SANTA ROSA — Eric Pemberton had carved out a steady career in furniture sales, but when he saw the opportunity for a new challenge, he didn’t hesitate. “I’ve been in sales for a really long time—I’ve sold everything from audio CDs to insurance,” he recounts. “Eventually, I ended up at Ashley Furniture, where I worked in the sales department and later became store manager. After eight years, I was ready for a new challenge. Not long after, I saw an ad for a sales position at Asien’s Appliance and decided to go for it. It was a great decision—I really enjoy my job. In particular, I like the variety that selling appliances entails. Every customer is looking for something different and no house layout is alike, so that keeps things interesting.”

Today, as a sales associate at Asien’s Appliance, Inc., Eric says his favorite part of his job is interacting with customers. “We get a lot of customers who are remodeling their kitchens, and I enjoy being a calming voice during what can be a chaotic time. It’s really fun to meet new people, educate them about their options and help them build the kitchens of their dreams.”

Originally from Montana, Eric resides today in Santa Rosa with his wife, Stacey, and their two children. Outside of work, he enjoys spending quality time with his family, participating in his local church and grilling in his backyard.

In regard to a professional philosophy, Eric espouses the wisdom of the Golden Rule. “I try to give my customers the same level of respect and service I expect to receive when I’m out shopping,” he explains. “When they leave our store, I don’t want them to feel like they were ignored or mistreated. I want them to walk out with a smile on their face, saying, ‘Wow, I’m glad we just met that guy!’”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Eric says he’d head for the hills. “I would probably move back to Montana. I’ve been all over that state and spent some time on the western side. I would probably find a little spot there in the mountains and just enjoy being in God’s country.”

  • Advantages of a Front-Load Washer

SANTA ROSA — If you’re in the market for a new washing machine, consider upgrading to a front-load model. Front-load washers have become an increasingly popular option in recent years, largely due to the many practical advantages they provide.

    These advantages include:

    Increased efficiency

A front-load washer uses roughly one-third the amount of water, detergent and energy that a top-load washer uses. Besides reducing the environmental impact of washing your clothes, this decreases the amount of money you’ll spend on detergent and utilities.

    Better cleaning

Whereas a top-load washer requires an agitator to clean clothes, a front-load washer’s sideways orientation creates natural agitation thanks to the effects of gravity. Besides being gentler on your clothes, this makes for better cleaning. In fact, front-load washers routinely outperform top-load models in cleaning tests.

    Faster spin cycle

Because front-load washers are capable of faster spin cycles, your clothes will come out slightly drier, which reduces the amount of work your dryer has to do.

    Stackability

Front-load washers offer the option of stacking a dryer on top, as opposed to the traditional side-to-side arrangement. Given the tight floor plans found in many California homes and apartments, this vertical stackability can be a valuable space saver.

SANTA ROSA — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re in the market for a new washing machine, be sure to consider the benefits of a front-load model. Today we’re in Santa Rosa with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Eric Pemberton of Asien’s Appliance to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Eric Pemberton: If you’re in the marketplace for a new laundry set, might I suggest front load laundry. They are becoming increasingly more popular these last number of years, all due to a couple of significant advantages over a top loader.

For starters, efficiency. Front-loaders use about a third the amount of water, energy, and detergent when compared to top loaders. They’re also gentler on clothes due to the lack of an agitator. Gravity works as the agitator in front load laundry. They routinely outperform top-load laundry in cleaning tests as well, so your clothes will come out cleaner.

Another big advantage is the faster spin cycles that the front loads allow. It is an average of 10% drier. Your clothes come out 10% drier than a top load, which gives your dryer an efficiency boost. It’s not working as hard to dry your clothes.

They’re stackable, so more apartment friendly. In tight spaces, you can either do side-by-side or stack them. Another nice feature about them is that because of their height and they don’t have that back panel, you can actually install them underneath countertops or low shelves if you need.

They were friendly, punctual and they did a good job.

They fixed the dishwasher and told us what was wrong with it. They were friendly, polite and patient as the customer was elderly and she would repeat herself.

They had a very good inventory of equipment and they had exactly what we wanted. They have reasonable prices and they are a good local, family owned business. They showed up to install when they said they would.

I thought the prices were reasonable, and they had a lot of inventory. I enjoyed it.

The amount of inventory, I had gone and looked at several places. I will be getting a new stove and will go there. The people are very knowledgeable, and they don't push you.
