Our customers appreciate that because it shows we truly care about their homes and businesses.”

Baltodano’s Drywall offers free consultations so its customers have a chance to discuss their ideas and make sure they’ll work for their particular projects. “We like to collaborate with our clients as much as possible so they get exactly what they want for their new walls,” says Mr. Baltodano. “Our number one goal is to ensure they’re satisfied with the results of our work.”

Company Philosophy

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for drywall contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Baltodano’s Drywall, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: do the job correctly the first time, every time. “We don’t like spending time redoing things we’ve already done–we lose money and it’s an inconvenience for our clients,” says owner Luis Baltodano. “That’s why we use high-quality products and take as much time as necessary to ensure the long-lasting integrity of our work.”

Baltodano’s Drywall has been installing drywall for all types of new construction and remodeling projects in the East Bay, San Francisco, and Marin County since 2012. The company has the in-house capabilities to handle every phase of the drywall process, and its technicians also have special expertise with hand-texturing–an old-world technique that’s used to create custom patterns in walls.

Unlike less experienced drywall contractors that pay little attention to jobsite cleanliness, Baltodano’s Drywall makes every effort to minimize the mess both during and after the job. “Most drywall companies are in such a hurry to get the job done that they don’t pay attention to the state of the worksite,” says Mr. Baltodano. “In contrast, we always take precautionary measures like putting down floor protection, and we try to keep things reasonably tidy throughout the workday.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Baltodano’s Drywall is its commitment to staying on the cutting edge of industry innovation. “Whenever a new product or piece of equipment comes out, we get it and take classes on how to use it properly so we can do the best possible work,” says Mr. Baltodano. “One of the more recent pieces of equipment we use is the latest HEPA sander, which is equipped with a high-filtration vacuum system that minimizes dust.”

Industry Info

Before hiring a contractor to work on your drywall project, make sure they’re properly licensed. If you’re in need of drywall services, your first inclination may be to choose a company that offers the lowest price. However, according to Luis Baltodano, owner of Baltodano’s Drywall in Brentwood, this might not be such a good idea. “If a company is quoting a price that’s significantly lower than other drywall contractors, it should be a red flag, particularly when it comes to licensing,” he says. “Since maintaining proper licensing entails a substantial cost, an unlicensed contractor doesn’t have as much overhead, which means they can offer lower prices and underbid legitimate contractors.”

Mr. Baltodano also cautions homeowners about having drywall work performed by a professional in a related trade. For instance, even if a painting contractor is licensed in his particular field, that doesn’t mean he’s fit to handle your drywall needs. “Some painters advertise drywall work, but you should be aware that painting and drywall require two different licenses, not to mention distinct spheres of expertise. If your painter says he can provide both services, ask to see both licenses.”

Consider quality when choosing drywall materials.
Most consumers assume all drywall materials are the same, but as Mr. Baltodano explains, failing to differentiate quality can lead to second-rate results. “To ensure a good final product, you should use a high-quality drywall mud,” he advises. “With a low-quality mud, there’s a greater tendency for cracks to form and corners to break. You’ll see these cheap materials used a lot in tract homes, which is why they constantly need repairs. To avoid the extra hassle, I recommend skipping cheap materials and going with something high-quality.”

As drywall materials continue to develop and improve, Mr. Baltodano says it’s best to choose not only a quality material, but a current one as well. “The latest drywall material out right now is Plus 3 mud, which is really light and thin, so there’s less chance of breaks and cracks occurring while it’s being hung. Also, Plus 3 produces minimal dust, which reduces its impact on indoor air quality.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long it will take to complete my project?

A: It depends on the extent of the work, but once we put together a price estimate, we’ll be able to give you a timeline.

Q: Can you give me an estimate on the spot?

A: We usually need to take measurements first so we can go back to our office and put the estimate together. We prefer to spend time crunching the numbers to ensure accuracy, especially if it’s a large project.

Q: Do you offer free consultations?

A: Yes, we offer free consultations so our customers have a chance to meet us and discuss their ideas for their projects.

Q: Do you work with plaster?

A: No, we strictly work with drywall.

Q: What is hand texturing?

A: Hand texturing is an old-world technique for adding texture to freshly applied drywall. Unlike sprayer-applied textures produced by machines, hand texturing enables craftsmen to create one-of-a-kind patterns.

Luis Baltodano: Stepping Toward Success

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

BRENTWOOD — When Luis Baltodano got his first job out of high school, he didn’t know he was taking his first step toward a long-term career. “After high school, I needed a job, so I just started calling around to different companies in the Bay Area,” he recounts. “Eventually, I found work with a small drywall company in the East Bay. I started as a laborer, worked my way up to being a taper and eventually became a journeyman drywall finisher. After working for a couple of different companies, I decided I was ready to do my own thing and started my own drywall business.”

Today, as owner of Baltodano’s Drywall, Luis cites multiple things he enjoys about his job. “I like helping clients with their projects and educating them about what we do. I also like being my own boss—it’s a big responsibility, but it’s very rewarding.”

Originally from Nicaragua, Luis came to the United States in 2000 and resides today in Antioch with his wife, Concepcion, and their two children. Outside of work, he spends most of his free time staying active. “I weight train daily at home and play soccer on the weekends,” he details. “I also like being involved in my kids’ sports activities. For example, my daughter does boxing, so I enjoy supporting her in that.” Additionally, Luis and his family enjoy going camping a few times each year.

In regard to his professional career, Luis espouses the importance of respecting clients and their homes through on-the-job cleanliness. “A lot of drywall companies don’t think about cleanliness, but it can make a big difference in terms of customer satisfaction,” he explains. “That’s why we make a point of keeping a clean worksite and take extra measures to protect each customer’s home and property. It all comes down to treating the customer’s house like it was our own.”

  • Tips for Drywall Repair

BRENTWOOD — From relocated electrical outlets to damage caused while moving furniture, there are many scenarios that require drywall repair. If you’re planning to patch an area of drywall in your home, you’ll need to make sure you’re using the correct procedure—otherwise, the results could be compromised.

One common mistake is failing to give drywall mud proper reinforcement. For example, when filling in the gap between an electrical outlet and the adjacent sheetrock, novices often think they only need to apply some drywall mud. However, it’s also important to apply some fiberglass tape in between coats of mud. This will give the repaired area an added measure of stability.

Another important step when repairing drywall is to blend the patched area with the rest of the wall. Simply take a wet sponge or rag and smooth out the edges of the patch. A lot of drywall companies neglect to do this final step, but it’s crucial to ensure a pleasing end result.
