Scott Bell: A Smooth Transition
By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter
ELK GROVE — When Scott Bell stepped in to help with his family’s pest control business, it wasn’t a difficult transition, in part because he was already acquainted with the industry. “My dad was a pest control technician, so I grew up around the business,” he explains. “After working as a technician for a number of years, he and my mom started their own pest control business in 1978. They started it out of their garage, and over the years, it grew significantly. I worked for the company for a short time after high school but ended up pursuing a career in sales and marketing. About 20 years later, my father passed away, so I stepped in to help with the business. While it was a different industry than I’d previously been working in, the transition wasn’t difficult because they were both service-related industries, so the goals were the same: take care of customers and keep them happy.”
Today, as marketing manager of Bell Pest Control, Scott says his favorite parts of his job are the rewards of working with others. “I enjoy working with our technicians to help them get better at what they do, and I also love hearing from clients who were happy with the services that we provided for them.”
A resident of Sacramento, Scott spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “I like going for walks on the beach and watching the big wave surfers,” he details. “I’m also an avid reader and I teach online business courses.” Additionally, Scott enjoys caring for his African gray parrot, Kae.
In regard to a professional philosophy, Scott espouses the value of great service. “My mom and dad always wanted this company to have a reputation for taking care of clients,” he explains. “They taught us that when we were kids—at the end of the day, service is the one thing that sets us apart. That’s why I’m so focused on helping our employees do their best. When we send someone to a client’s home, the best thing we can do to ensure customer satisfaction is make sure they’re properly trained.”
When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Scott says he would share his business knowledge and experience with others. “I would probably volunteer my time to work with young entrepreneurs and help them with business development.”
