Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Miro Bokaric: The main point, main tip, for kitchen remodel in this case is that get your electrician on early stage, before you even thinking about remodeling. Because you’re going to have an idea what’s going to be your budget, how much electrical is needed, but the main important part is that electrician will be able to understand what exactly you want, where you want the under cabinet lights, overhead lights, or any kind of recessed lights in the kitchen. So in this case we have under cabinets through the cabinet lights and above the cabinet lights because the customer himself wanted the non-recessed lights. And he wanted – they wanted more lighting through original LED lighting through the ceiling, but not using recessed lights for some reason. And in that case, the best thing is that you prepare the wiring and set up the wires to certain locations through the blueprint or plans and make sure the height for each cabinets and location and lower cabinets and upper cabinets the difference.

And set up the electrical wiring from switch boxes which they are on the opposite side of the kitchen, as you enter to the kitchen, so again, focus to electrical is that electrical kitchen, electrical wiring, has to be minimum seven to eight circuits. Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Miro Bokaric: The case that you have new kitchen. You’re planning to build the brand-new kitchen. You want to have a nice state-of-the-art, 21st century lighting in your house, and oops, your house is actually old 1920s and 30s and has old wiring, existing wiring, old black knob into wiring. The best way for you is to get an electrician, of course. And what we could do is like check, make sure that your electrical panel is up to current standards, or up to code. In case you have an old fuse box, definitely replace it to a breaker box. Also, insurance will be lower. Your electric equipment in your house will be safe, and whole house will be protected, 21st century.

And focus to service, it’s like this one, let’s say you’re upgrading your service to 200-amp service. You require two-inch conduit, number two at wiring which is more details later, your panel has to be a certain height. There is limitations on the ceiling, on your heather, also you have to have a clearance in front of that panel. You cannot put garbage cans or any kind of equipment or make it in a closet. You cannot enclose your panel. It has to be exposed in any case for an emergency so that you can disconnect the breaker, turn off the power, and safely call the fire department or electrician to fix the problem.

The best thing is that in case you have a breaker box like this, focus the idea that some breakers have dots which they are like protection – more protection for you. So these breakers itself have points that arc fault in case of any kind of arc or any kind of fluctuation of power, these breakers trip. That means there’s no more power, no more danger. You’re free to call an electrician back. In case you have multiple breakers like this, focus the idea that these breakers are reason because you have multiple wiring in the system, and they’re sharing neutral which is more detail later. The idea that you have a sub-panel which is a big breaker, two-prong, that’s because you have additional sub-panel in the house which is closer to your location where you’re going to be kitchen remodel. You’re sitting, you’re watching TV, all of a sudden all of the lights are flickering. Your TV is losing power. Your refrigerator doesn’t work. You have a strange flickering in the bathroom. The best thing is to call an electrician, first available, and make sure that you guys do not try to do it by yourself. Focus to the idea that electrical could kill you, could hurt you, or could make more heart problems in case that you get shocked. So the best thing is that since we are electricians, we have testers, we have the equipment so we could physically reach to those enclosed spaces, open the panels, open the meter sockets, and focus the idea that breaker box is live. So we know which part we could test it, which part we could disconnect it, without damaging your equipment in your house.

In case that the PG&E problem is the wiring outdoor, which is most of the time from the weather and win and like some truck came by and ripped the wires, then definitely still call the electrician, make sure that the electrician is testing the electrical wiring on the main source, which is on the top of the building.
