Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for flooring companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For California Custom Carpets, the key to keeping customers happy is simple: focus all its efforts on removing the stress from their floor buying experience. “We know the process of choosing new flooring can be stressful, so we offer a low-pressure environment with knowledgeable staff members who guide our customers through the process,” says Store Manager Curt Glaze. “By gaining an understanding of their circumstances, we can give them all the information they need to make smart decisions.”

California Custom Carpets has been offering carpet, hardwood, laminate and tile flooring products at its Dublin showroom since 1976. The company’s inventory also includes products like custom area rugs and window coverings, and its technicians have the training and equipment to install flooring for residential and commercial clients throughout Alameda and Contra Costa Counties.

Unlike less experienced flooring companies that overcharge their clients for both products and installation services, California Custom Carpets offers straightforward pricing in every aspect of its operations. “We keep our overhead costs low, so we don’t have to artificially inflate our prices just so we can lower them when we have a sale,” explains Mr. Glaze. “Each quote we provide is priced according to the size of the job and the actual cost of the materials, with no exorbitant markups. It’s honest pricing with honest value.”

Another distinguishing attribute of California Custom Carpets is its objective approach to customer service. “It doesn’t matter if a client wants to redo the floors in their entire house or just in one room, we treat their job with the same level of respect,” affirms Vice President Beverly Kent. “I can’t tell you how many times a customer has chosen us over a competitor merely because they liked the way we treated them.”

Industry Info

If you’re planning to sell your home, consider the benefits of upgrading its flooring.

When it comes to selling a house, homeowners naturally want to get the highest price they possibly can. That’s why they often invest in upgrades to increase their property’s appeal to potential buyers, as well as its actual resale value. One common upgrade is replacing or refurbishing flooring. Whether you’re thinking about replacing your carpet or refurbishing long-neglected hardwood floors, upgrading the flooring in your home can be an effective way to get more value out of your sale.

However, it’s important to understand that the value gained by upgrading flooring can vary significantly depending on the nature of the upgrade. “When it comes to upgrades, flooring falls into two categories,” says Curt Glaze, store manager of California Custom Carpets in Dublin. “Installing new carpet or vinyl flooring is considered a cosmetic upgrade, whereas installing hardwood or tile flooring is considered a construction improvement. The latter can actually increase the appraised value of your home, whereas the former will just make your home look nicer for buyers. However, in the end, either measure can potentially help you sell your home for a higher price.”

For this reason, when upgrading the flooring in your home, Mr. Glaze recommends being sure of your purpose. “If you have some money to invest in upgrades, it may be worthwhile to install an expensive flooring product that can increase your home’s appraisal value,” he suggests. “Keep in mind that the cost of installation will factor into your overall expense, so it’s important to do the math and look at cost versus value. On the other hand, if you don’t have a large budget for upgrades, an economically priced carpet or vinyl flooring product can effectively showcase your property for a much lower investment.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do your products ever go on sale?
A: We don’t really do sales—we view them as marketing gimmicks. A lot of flooring showrooms artificially inflate their prices just so they can lower them to have sales. In contrast, our products are reasonably priced to begin with.

Q: What’s the difference between solid hardwood and engineered hardwood?
A: Solid hardwood is a natural wood plank; engineered hardwood is a veneer of natural wood on top of a multilayered substrate. Engineered products offer several practical advantages—unlike solid hardwood, they can be installed anywhere and they don’t expand or contract with changes in temperature or humidity. They’re also less expensive than solid hardwood products.

Q: What’s the best carpet for my home?
A: A lot of people focus on the look of their carpet, but it’s also important to factor in things like lifestyle and budget. Carpet is categorized by the type of fiber it’s made from, such as polyester, nylon, SmartStrand or wool. All of these fibers have different characteristics and price points, so you have to ask yourself some questions. What type of lifestyle do you have? Are there young children or pets in your house? Are you planning to move in the near future? These questions (along with your budget) will help guide your decision.

Q: What’s your advice on carpet color?
A: Go as dark as you can stand to. White carpet is lovely, but it’s extremely hard to keep clean. Typically, a carpet’s color will look lighter when it’s installed than it does at the showroom, so that’s something to keep in mind. Basically, it’s all about finding a balance between having a color you like and having a color that’s practical for everyday living.

Q: Do you offer laminate flooring?
A: Yes, but we recommend choosing a rigid core vinyl product instead. Today’s vinyl flooring is comparable to laminate in price, but it offers better durability and looks just as good or better.

Q: Do you sell area rugs?
A: We don’t stock area rugs, but we do make them to order. When we stocked area rugs in the past, it always seemed like they weren’t the right size, color or price point. We realized that if we custom-made rugs instead, we could provide exactly what our customers were looking for. We can make area rugs out of any of the carpet materials in our showroom, and they can be very ornate with borders, inlays, and other features.

Curt Glaze: A Perfect Fit

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

DUBLIN — Between his professional and personal experience, Curt Glaze found a career in flooring sales to be a perfect fit. “Before getting into flooring, I worked as a program manager for Hewlett-Packard,” he recounts. “I’ve always liked working with people. Personally, I also did a lot of remodeling on my home and always enjoyed the design aspects of it. So, when I decided to switch careers, I found that flooring sales was a good fit. Over the years of working in the industry, I’ve encountered everything from small fixer-upper homes to big-budget luxury remodeling projects, so when someone walks into the store, I usually understand the kinds of challenges they’re facing.”

As showroom manager of California Custom Carpets, Curt says his favorite part of his job is the interpersonal aspect. “I enjoy meeting new people and helping them find solutions to their flooring needs. Often, customers come in and have no idea what they’re looking for, what’s available or what they can afford. With our help, by the time everything is said and done, they’re usually really happy with the end result.”

A resident of Livermore, Curt spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “I enjoy reading, going for drives and doing outdoor activities like hiking. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve slowed down a little bit, so it doesn’t take much to make me happy.” Curt also likes keeping in touch with his two grown daughters, one of whom lives in Arizona and one of whom is currently attending college.

In regard to a professional philosophy, Curt says it’s all about treating customers fairly. “We try to do right by our customers and, if possible, give them a little more than they’re expecting. When I’m pricing a job, I’m figuring out what makes sense for the company in terms of the profit we need to make, but I’m also thinking about what’s fair to the customer. And during the job, if I do X, Y, and Z and we end up needing W as well, I’ll usually include W at no added cost to the customer. We just try to do the right thing, give the customer a good value and make sure everyone comes out a winner.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Curt says he’d head back to the ranch. “I’d go to Arizona to spend some time with my daughter. She trains horses and that’s one of my passions as well—I actually grew up working on ranches. So, the plan when I retire is to go annoy her.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What was your first job?
A: Technically, the first time I got paid to work for somebody else, I was 10 years old, picking up trash at a drive-in theater for 50 cents an hour. But my first “real” job was working on ranches as part of the hay crew when I was 12 or 13.

Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?
A: Both. I enjoy being up early in the morning, but I also like to stay up and read. Sometimes I get caught up in a book and go to sleep later than I’d planned to.

Q: What kind of books do you like to read?
A: I read a lot of historical fiction, as well as classic fiction and the occasional crime drama. I also enjoy poetry.

Q: What’s your favorite snack?
A: Snickerdoodles.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Lately, I’ve been thinking that I haven’t seen much of Canada. I’d like to go to Calgary, Alberta for the Calgary Stampede, which has the world’s biggest rodeo.

  • Factors for Choosing a Flooring Product

DUBLIN—There are many types of flooring, and within each of these types is a range of styles and attributes. As a result, when shopping for flooring, it’s not always easy to determine which product is right for you. In the end, you’ll need to base your decision on several factors, including cost, durability and ease of maintenance. Consider the following examples:

    Hard flooring

When it comes to hard flooring, hardwood is as durable and beautiful a product as you can ask for. While it does require maintenance, it’s really not that difficult to care for. Plus, it adds to home resale value, which makes it a wise investment. However, hardwood is more expensive than most flooring types, and the fact that it requires maintenance can be a deal-breaker for some. If you’re looking for something affordable and easy to maintain, a luxury vinyl plank product can be a good option because it’s inexpensive and also durable and waterproof.

    Carpet

As with hard flooring, your choice of carpet will depend on your particular needs and lifestyle. Wool carpet is very luxurious, but because of its high price, it doesn’t fit all budgets. Polyester carpet has a lot of great qualities but doesn’t possess the durability that other styles offer; it can be a good choice if you’re just doing a couple of bedrooms or only plan to stay in your home for the short term. Nylon and SmartStrand are both good mid-range options—they offer the best in stain resistance, durability, softness and style/color variety for an affordable price.

  • The Truth About Engineered Hardwood Floors

DUBLIN — When it comes to wood flooring, many consumers have a perception that engineered hardwood is inferior to solid hardwood. In reality, that’s not at all the case. To learn more, let’s do a side-by-side comparison to learn some of the differences between these related flooring styles.

Solid hardwood floors are pretty self-explanatory: they’re made of solid planks, usually about three quarters of an inch thick. They can be finished in place or prefinished, but they can also be tricky to install and they’re generally pretty expensive.

Engineered hardwood floors also contain authentic wood, but in the form of a veneer that sits on top of a multilayered substrate. This veneer can vary in thickness from one to six millimeters. Since the flooring product contains less natural wood, it’s generally less expensive than solid hardwood, but it still offers the same look and feel.

The biggest advantage of engineered hardwood flooring is its increased stability, which makes it both easier and more versatile in terms of installation. With solid hardwood floors, you have to be very careful throughout the installation process, from allowing the product to acclimate to the home to installing it at the proper widths. Even after that, climate changes in the home over the course of a year can lead to problems with the floor cupping, peaking or buckling. In contrast, you don’t see these types of problems with engineered hardwood floors. They are susceptible to traumatic moisture (as any wood floor is), but beyond that, they’re perfectly stable and therefore make a lot more sense for most households.

Curt Glaze: Easiest way to break down the 500 or so carpet samples I have in here is by fiber. And obviously a wool carpet is very luxurious, but it’s also kind of expensive and doesn’t make sense for a lot of people or fit their budgets.

On the other end of the spectrum, polyester carpets have a lot of great qualities. But you’re probably not going to expect the durability, certainly not of a wool or of a nylon or a SmartStrand carpet. However, if you’re just doing a few bedrooms or you’re going to be in the house five, 10 years, might be a really, really positive way to, to invest

The bread and butter carpets is, 90% of the carpets I sell probably, are nylon or SmartStrand. And those are the two fibers that a top, all the others in terms of stain resistance and durability. Softness texture, variety of styles, all those sorts of things.

  • Video: Hardwood VS. Luxury Vinyl Plank

    Complete Video Transcription

Curt Glaze: You know, people come in with a lot of questions about what they should choose. For example, hardwood versus the luxury vinyl planks that have become really popular. I love hardwood; in my world, everybody would put hardwood everywhere because I just think it’s fantastic and beautiful. And it’s really not difficult to care for. And it adds to the appraised value of your home, which is a strong point in my opinion.

However, a lot of people, very busy, both parents working, three kids running to soccer practice, a large dog that likes to chase the tennis ball through the house. They might not appreciate hardwood as much. They might see their investment gets scratched up. And for them a luxury vinyl product is great because it’s a durable and it’s waterproof and it’s less expensive than the hardwood.

  • Video: The Truth About Engineered Hardwood Floors

    Complete Video Transcription

DUBLIN — Curt Glaze: Okay, a lot of times customers come into our showroom and they ask about engineered hardwood. And they somehow have a perception that it’s a lesser product, that it’s not durable, or that it’s cheap or for whatever reason it’s an inferior product to a solid hardwood product. That’s actually not at all the case – I spend quite a bit of time explaining this to people. You know, a solid hardwood floor is pretty self explanatory. It is a thick plank, usually about three quarters of an inch thick. Um, the ones I’d be talking about are prefinished. They’re beautiful floors. They’re desirable. However, they can also be a little bit tricky to install, and they’re generally pretty expensive. An engineered floor on the other hand, has the same wood as the solid floor, but in a veneer. And these veneers will have varying thicknesses from one to six millimeters, typically. And when you walk on an engineered floor or walk on a solid floor, your feet don’t know the difference.

The differences that come in are that there are advantages to the engineered floor. One advantage is that it is much easier to install and takes less acclimation. In an area like this where a lot of homes are built on slab foundation, you can install an engineered floor where a solid floor isn’t appropriate. Another advantage is because you’re using less of the feature wood that comprises the veneer as opposed to a solid floor. The product is generally less expensive. But the biggest advantage is that an engineered floor is more dimensionally stable. Solid floors, you have to be very careful, throughout the installation process – acclimating them to the home, installing them with the proper widths, and even after all that, you can have climatic changes in the home over the course of a year and have problems with the floor cupping or peaking or buckling. Those problems, you don’t see them with an engineered floor. I’ve never seen an engineered hardwood floor buckle or peak. They are susceptible to traumatic moisture, but your day to day life – they’re perfectly stable and they make a lot more sense for most consumers.
