Raul Carrera: A Crystal Clear Opportunity
By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter
VALLEJO—When Raul Carrera was given an opportunity to purchase the window cleaning business he worked at, the choice was crystal clear. “I’ve been cleaning windows for more than 20 years,” he says. “My uncle and cousin were window washers, and they trained me in it when I was young. Later, I got a job working here at Crystal Clear Window Cleaning. When the owner decided to retire in 2018, he offered me an opportunity to buy the company. I had been working here for 12 years at that point, so I was very familiar with the company’s operations and customer base. It was a great opportunity, so I took it, and I’m very happy that I did.”
Raul says graduating from employee to owner has been a positive transition. “On one hand, things haven’t changed too much—I’m still working in the field like I always have. But on the other hand, I now have the power to implement certain changes that I think will improve things for the company and our employees, so that’s a great thing.”
A resident of Vallejo (where he lives with his wife and two children), Raul spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “My main hobby is working on cars,” he details. “When I was a kid, my dad taught me how to change oil and things like that, and ever since then I’ve loved automotive work.” When he’s not under the hood of a car, Raul enjoys spending quality time with his family, whether it’s an afternoon at a local park or a weekend getaway to Lake Berryessa.
In regard to a professional philosophy, Raul espouses the virtues of going the extra mile. “I believe the customer is always right, and sometimes you have to do a little extra to make them happy,” he explains. “I’ve worked for other companies that would charge more for anything beyond the basic scope of the job, but that’s not how I operate. If the customer asks for something extra, I usually just take care of them, because if they’re happy, it’s going to reward us in the long term.”
When asked what he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Raul says he would hit the open road. “I enjoy driving long distances, so if I retired, I’d probably take a road trip across the United States. I’d also spend more time repairing and restoring cars.”
