Michael Davis: A Long Way to the Top
By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter
GALT — Michael Davis has been in the roofing trade since he was a teenager. Looking back, he credits his early initiation to a family friend in the industry. “My godfather owns a roofing company,” he recounts. “My dad and my brother both worked for him, so naturally I ended up there as well. I was 14 years old when I started and that’s where I received all my training. Basically, I fell in love with the trade and I’ve been involved ever since.”
More than two decades after beginning his career, Michael finally made the transition from employee to owner. “In 2017, my wife, Cintra, and I decided it was time to start our own business. I didn’t have much experience running a business, so I took some courses beforehand to educate myself and prepare for my new role. Three years later, it’s working out wonderfully. I consider starting this business one of my life’s greatest successes.”
Today, as owner of Davis Roofing Group, Michael says his favorite part of his job is the satisfaction of a job well done. “I like taking a project from start to finish and making the process as smooth as possible for the customer. When the job is complete, there’s a feeling of joy that comes from seeing them happy with the work we did.”
A resident of Galt (where he lives with Cintra and their three children), Michael spends much of his free time enjoying the outdoors. “We own six acres of property here in Galt, so we enjoy riding our dirt bikes and tending to our fruit trees, chickens, and ducks,” he details. “We also enjoy camping and other outdoor activities.”
When asked about the secret to his career success, Michael cites a strong sense of pride in his work. “I take a lot of pride in anything I do, whether I’m working around the house or installing a roof,” he explains. “When you take pride in what you do, I think that creates good energy, and people feed off that energy.” He also emphasizes the importance of honesty. “When I call a service provider about a problem I don’t know anything about, I expect them to be honest and very thorough with me. That’s exactly what I try to do for the customers we serve, and I think they appreciate it.”
When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Michael says he’d hit the open road. “I’d buy an RV and travel the country. However, I don’t plan on ever fully retiring—I’ll probably always have my hands involved in the business. Ideally, there will be a time when I can walk away and leave it for my kids to run. It’s a family-run business, and I’d like to keep it that way.”
