Company Philosophy

“We take pride in our excellent listening skills—as our clients explain their visions, we interpret what they want and blend it with the realistic possibilities of their sites. Our goal is to create sturdy, elegant, aesthetically pleasing structures that last for generations.”

Comparative Summary

As deck specialists, DeckMaster Fine Decks is able to produce a higher quality of workmanship than many general contractors who only build decks as part of larger construction projects. “We combine the skills of a framer and the eye of a finish carpenter, so our decks look like nice pieces of furniture when we’re done,” says owner Weston Leavens.

Mr. Leavens is not only an award-winning local contractor; he’s also the inventor of DeckMaster Hidden Brackets, a concealed fastening system that’s now commonly used throughout the industry. He says he and his team pride themselves on making sure each customer has a rewarding, professional experience, from the way their pets and landscape are treated to the communication they receive throughout the process. “We provide clear communication from the initial consultation through the execution of the project,” confirms Mr. Leavens. “I’m on the job 90 percent of the time. If a question arises or a client wants to change something, I’m right there.”

DeckMaster Fine Decks works on one project at a time, so there are never any interruptions during a job. The company only hires experienced, highly-trained crewmembers to work on its projects, and its foreman has been with the company for more than six years. “Technically speaking, decks aren’t the most difficult part of homebuilding, but our expertise and attention to detail set us apart,” says Mr. Leavens. “We’re very flexible–if a client sees something they want to change as their project progresses, we can make adjustments to satisfy them.”

DeckMaster Fine Decks works closely with its clients to find the right design attributes to fit their sites, views and long-term needs. The company seeks out the best materials and uses industry-best products such as AZEK synthetics, EverGrain composites and Superdeck staining products. To supplement its construction services, it also provides free consultations that include topics such as legal considerations (code requirements, permits, zoning), project designs, site evaluations and troubleshooting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much will my deck cost?

A: There’s no simple answer, because it’s not based on square footage or similar factors. We have to come out and look at the project site to assess the price range, and then we’ll prepare an estimate based on the specific parameters.

Q: What are my choices for decking materials?

A: We work with a wide range of materials, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages based on the design and budget of your decking project. Before choosing a material, you should determine how much maintenance you’re willing to do.

Q: How much maintenance will my deck require?

A: It’s hard to improve on the look of wood, especially when it’s brand new. To keep it looking that way takes work and money—you can’t leave wood out in the weather and expect it to stay looking like new. Redwood, for example, is very soft and can erode without a good finish. Redwood decks need to be cleaned and stained every two years. Exotic hardwood decks need to be refinished, cleaned and restained annually.

Q: How do I know which composite or synthetic material to use?

A: It depends on the appearance you prefer and how much maintenance you’re willing to tolerate. AZEK synthetic products, for example, are very easy to clean up. If you spill something oily on EverGrain or Trex composite products, however, the stain will be absorbed forever.

Weston Leavens: Deck Master

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SEBASTOPOL – Weston Leavens always knew he wanted to work with wood for a living, but he also wanted to find an industry niche that offered the best of two scenarios. “I discovered that as a carpenter, you basically have two choices,” he explains. “You can be a framer, which enables you to work outside but all your work gets covered up, or you can be a finish carpenter, in which case your work remains seen but you’re stuck inside all the time.” Eventually, Weston found that building decks offered the happy medium he was looking for. “With deck building, I was able to work outdoors and create products that didn’t get covered up at the end of the job.” Twenty-five years later, as owner of Deckmaster Fine Decks, Weston continues to enjoy the balanced benefits that come with being a deck builder.

Weston’s major contribution to his industry is a groundbreaking technique that literally takes an inverse approach to traditional deck building. “As I spent more time in the industry, I found I was replacing a lot of decks that weren’t really that old,” he says. “In many cases, I found this was the result of water penetrating the nail and screw holes in the deck, which then caused its understructure to rot prematurely.” Weston surmised that if he could devise a way to attach the deck boards from below, he could avoid this issue and improve the deck’s aesthetic quality at the same time. “We ultimately came up with the hidden bracket system, which revolutionized the deck industry and is still the best way to build a deck.”

Originally from Southern California, Weston moved to Sonoma County in 1996 with his wife, Jenny, after deciding it was time for a change of scenery. “We were sick of city life and wanted to relocate to a more rural area,” he says. The Leavenses found just the atmosphere they were looking for in the small town of Sebastopol, where they continue to appreciate its characteristic tranquility and natural beauty.

Outside of work, Weston participates in everything from daily yoga to outdoor activities like kayaking and walking his dog, Bo. One of his lesser-known hobbies, however, is competing in chess tournaments. “I’m no Bobby Fischer, but I’m not bad,” he laughs. Weston also likes to hook up his camper and hit the road on occasion, which he says is the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow. “Jenny and I enjoy taking road trips to remote locations, so I think if I retired we’d plan a longer, more elaborate trip and check out some new places we’ve never been to.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite tree?
A: Redwood.

Q: Ever had a conversation with a famous person?
A: I once did a project for Lance Alworth, an NFL Hall of Famer who played for the San Diego Chargers. I actually didn’t know who he was at the time. I noticed he had some silver football trophies on his mantle, so I said, “It looks like you’re into football,” to which he casually replied, “Yeah, I played for the Chargers.”

Q: If you could time travel, would you go to the past or the future?
A: I have no idea—I’m still trying to figure out how to stay in the present!

Q: What’s your favorite animal?
A: My dog, Bo. Everybody wants to know what his breed is, so we call him a Sonoma Shepherd because he’s just a mix.

Q: How do you like your eggs?
A: Scrambled.

Q: Who makes you laugh?
A: Bill Cosby and Eddie Izzard.

  • A Cutting-Edge Product for Non-Wood Decks

SEBASTOPOL — Many people love authentic wood decks, but not everyone wants to deal with the maintenance they require. That’s why, over the last two decades, we’ve seen a profusion of non-wood or “composite” decking materials hit the market, each of which has achieved varying degrees of quality and performance.

From the beginning, composite decking manufacturers have faced two main challenges. The first is achieving the appearance of authentic wood; after all, homeowners may not want the maintenance that comes with real wood, but they do want the aesthetics. The second challenge is preventing excessive heat buildup in warm weather, a common problem due to the sheer density of composite materials.

One of the most recent products to hit the market comes closer than ever to meeting these challenges: Zuri® Premium Decking by Royal®. Zuri decking features a simulated wood grain that mimics natural wood more accurately than any previous product. Additionally, Zuri decking resists heat gain when in direct sunlight—in fact, it’s so precisely engineered that it stays within a few degrees of the temperature that similarly colored natural woods would reach under comparable conditions.

Zuri decking’s performance highlights don’t end there. It’s also durable—five times tougher and more scratch-resistant than any composite product on the market. Furthermore, it provides superior resistance against color fading, so if you have to replace a deck board in five years, it will likely match up perfectly with the older ones.

  • The Benefits of Hidden Brackets

SEBASTOPOL — If you’re in the market for a new deck, you may find yourself overwhelmed with choices, as material options range from composites and synthetics to hardwoods and softwoods. However, an equally important factor to consider is how you want to attach the deck boards to your structure.

Many deck builders are still nailing or screwing decks together from the top down, which can cause several problems down the road. Besides being unsightly, protruding nails and screws can be a tripping hazard. In addition, water can penetrate the nail and screw holes and cause premature rot, which shortens the deck’s lifespan.

A good way to avoid these kinds of issues is to use a hidden bracket system. With hidden brackets, joists are attached beneath the deck boards, which allows the builder to insert the screws on the deck’s underside. The end result is a clean, unblemished deck surface that’s as safe and durable as it is aesthetically pleasing.

  • Video: A Better Product for Composite Decks

    Complete Video Transcription

SEBASTOPOL — Host, Sarah Rutan: When planning to build a composite deck, it’s important to purchase a high-quality product. Today we’re in Sebastopol with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Weston Leavens of Deckmaster Fine Decks to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Weston Leavens: Everybody loves decks, but nobody wants to do the maintenance that most decks require. So, that’s why in the last 20 years or so, we’ve seen a profusion of non-wood decks. All different composites have hit the market with varying degrees of quality and varying degrees of success. Some have had real problems, some have been okay. But the big challenge for a composite deck maker is people don’t really want to see decks that look like plastic, and they also don’t want decks that get really hot.

Heat has been a big problem with wood plastic composites because they’re very dense and they build up a lot of heat. So, you can actually blister your feet on a hot deck. So, the different manufacturers have been looking for ways to reduce the heat on decks and also give them a more natural surface.

The product that we’ve been really excited about is called Zuri Premium Decking and it’s a PVC composite. It actually has a simulated wood grain. It looks more natural than anything else. And the way it’s designed, it actually is much cooler to the touch on a hot day.

So, I just wanted to show you here. This is the Zuri decking, and you can see how all the boards are different. They actually take a print of the wood, so it looks more like wood than anything else I’ve seen. And this surface that they have is actually five times tougher than any other composite decking on the market. It’s extremely durable. So, dog toenails, high heels, just moving furniture around, really nothing is going to mar this decking.

The other thing is that even on a warm day like today, the deck is warm like anything else, but it stays within a degree or two of a wood of a similar color. So, if you have a real dark wood, it would get hotter and lighter woods like cedar might be cooler. So, the Zuri decking is going to stay within a degree or two of a similarly colored wood.

And that’s about it. It’s just a great looking deck. It has better fade resistance than anything else we found. If you have to replace a board in five years, it will probably match up perfectly with the older deck boards. So, this is the decking that we’re most excited about today. It’s called Zuri Premium.

  • Video: Hidden Brackets for Deck Installation

    Complete Video Transcription

SANTA ROSA —  Host, Sarah Rutan: Today we’re in Sebastopol with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Weston Leavens of Deckmaster Fine Decks to learn about hidden brackets that you can use for your deck installation.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Weston Leavens: If you’re in the market for a new deck, you may find yourself overwhelmed with choices. There are composites, synthetics, hardwoods, softwoods but one thing you really need to consider is how you are going to attach those deck boards to your structure.

Many people are still nailing or screwing decks down from the top down and we’ve all seen the problems that come from that type of construction. Everybody has tripped on nails and seen ugly screw heads.

What I recommend is a deck master hidden bracket. We attach it to the joists from below and then we screw your deck boards up from below so that you never have any penetration on the surface of your deck. The end result is just a clean, unbroken surface and you never have to worry about tripping on a nail head.

So no matter what decking you are using whether it’s a soft wood or an exotic hardwood or synthetic or composite, use the hidden brackets that are going to make your deck look the best and last the longest.
