Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for data recovery companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For DriveSavers Data Recovery, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: apply its comprehensive industry knowledge and pioneering approach to data recovery on every job, regardless of the size. “Our superior expertise and relationships with numerous manufacturers enable us to recover a larger percentage of data than most companies,” says Senior Manager John Christopher. “We do whatever it takes to return our customers’ data systems to normal, and they really appreciate that.”

DriveSavers Data Recovery has been providing data recovery services for clients throughout Northern California and beyond since 1985. The company’s main focus is recovering data from crashed and broken computer hard drives, but it also has the capabilities to retrieve information from smartphones, tablets, digital camera cards and various removable media devices.

Unlike companies that offer numerous services in addition to data recovery, DriveSavers Data Recovery is completely focused on restoring its clients’ data systems, which, according to Director of Customer Support Gary Blount, has directly contributed to its high success rate. “People come to us because we focus on one thing and do it all in one facility,” he says. “Our customer service representatives, data recovery specialists and engineers are all very knowledgeable about the data recovery process, so our customers always get the same high level of care.”

Another distinguishing attribute of DriveSavers Data Recovery is its dedication to ensuring all data is handled sensitively and with complete confidentiality. “Every employee has to pass a background check, and we’re annually certified with a network security audit, a HIPAA Security Compliance Report and an SOC 2 Type II audit,” explains Mr. Blount. “From large corporations to individuals, our goal is to keep every client’s data private and confidential.”

Industry Info

Choose the right data recovery company to maximize your chances of getting back your important data.

If your computer crashes or you face a disaster that renders your computer inaccessible, your first thought might be, “How do I get my files back?” The best course of action is to find a data recovery service provider. But according to John Christopher, Senior Manager of Marketing Communications at DriveSavers Data Recovery, it’s vital that you choose the right company the first time. “Often, the first attempt at recovering data is the only attempt we get,” he explains. “If you keep a bad hard drive running, it can destroy the media and make it impossible to get your data back. If you choose an inexperienced data recovery provider or a one-man shop that simply tries to run software, you risk losing your only chance to get back your important data.”

Critical data isn’t just something large companies and government agencies keep on their computers—homeowners also have irreplaceable data on their laptops and desktop computers, including wedding photos, videos of children, personal documents, and banking and financial information. To avoid data loss and increase the chances of retaining your data, consider the following tips:

  • Backup your data on a regular basis, and always run a backup before upgrading your computer system. Keep a copy of your backup files in the cloud or offsite.
  • Immediately shut down your computer if you hear any unusual sounds such as grinding, repetitive clicking or whirring sounds. Call a professional data recovery firm right away.
  • Be sure to install and use updated virus protection software. New computer viruses appear frequently so always maintain the antivirus updates to protect your data.
  • Install a high-quality surge protector or an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to protect your computer equipment from power spikes and interruptions.
  • Avoid using home remedies found on the Internet to recover your vital information. If your data is important, call a professional data recovery provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How soon can I get my data back?
A: We offer around-the-clock priority service, so we can restore your data right away if it’s an emergency. For less urgent situations, we offer one- to two-day service. We also offer five- to seven-day service if your need isn’t urgent.

Q: Do you offer an evaluation service?
A: Yes. You can send or bring in your hard drive or computer and we’ll evaluate its recoverability. There is no charge for the evaluation, and afterward, we’ll call and tell you what we’ve determined.

Q: What types of operating systems and equipment can you restore?
A: We work on all types of operating systems and storage devices, including laptops and desktops; iPhones and iPads; tablets and smartphones; SSD devices; RAID, NAS and SAN devices; and digital camera media.

Q: How do I know if my data is worth restoring?
A: It really comes down to the value of the data. If the lost data is important to you or critical to your business, restoration is definitely worth it. However, if it’s insignificant or can easily be recreated, you may not require data recovery.

Q: Do you provide bilingual services?
A: We serve customers worldwide, so we offer services in many languages. We have a list of toll-free phone numbers on our website that customers can call to get service in their native language, including Spanish, French, German and Gaelic.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Mike Cobb

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Mike Cobb is a veteran of the computer service industry and director of engineering at DriveSavers, Inc., a Diamond Certified company since 2013. He can be reached at (800) 440-1904 or by email.

Mike Cobb: Digging for Data

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

NOVATO — When asked how he got into the computer service industry, Mike Cobb says it all began with a high school job working for his father. “My dad ran a driving school when I was growing up. He also loved computers and started using them for data entry and marketing when it was still pretty cutting-edge. My first interactions with computers were doing data entry for his business and creating labels for mailed marketing materials.”

It was while working for his father that Mike had his first data recovery experience. “During Christmas break one year, I was working on a report for my dad,” he recounts. “Before I had a chance to print it out, my dad decided to reformat the hard drive. Later, when I put in my floppy disk, the original applications had changed, so I couldn’t open the file I’d been working on. To get around this, I learned how to do the hexadecimal editor in ASCII, which enabled me to strip out my report and put it into a new format. Fortunately, I was still able to get the report finished by the end of Christmas break.”

Through these early experiences with computers, Mike developed an interest that led him to get his BS in computer science from University of California, Riverside. Following college, he landed a job doing technical support, where he gained further experience helping customers with data loss issues. In 1994, he joined the team at DriveSavers, Inc.

Today, as DriveSavers’ director of engineering, Mike says his favorite part of his job is coming to the aid of customers in the midst of data distress. “I like being the hero and reuniting people with their lost data.” In addition to the regular customers he serves on a daily basis, Mike occasionally gets the chance to tackle data loss emergencies for high-profile clients. “I think the one that meant the most to me was former President Gerald Ford,” he says. “He actually sent me a personalized signed photo to say thanks!”

Originally from Southern California, Mike now resides in Sonoma County with his family. Outside of work, he spends his time engaged in a variety of active pastimes. “I’m very involved with the Boy Scouts, along with my kids,” he says. “My son recently became an Eagle Scout at the age of 16, and I’m very proud of him. I also enjoy playing tennis, especially doubles because I like the teamwork aspect. My favorite tennis partner is my wife—we make a great team.”

In his life and career, Mike espouses the importance of having a “can do” attitude. “One of my favorite quotes is from Confucius, which goes, ‘The man who says he can and the man who says he cannot are both correct.’ When it comes to data recovery, this means not giving up until we’ve exhausted every possible means. If there’s any question of whether the data can be recovered, we don’t quit—we keep at it with the hope that there’s still a chance.”

When asked how his life would change if he retired tomorrow, Mike says he’d become more involved in charity work. “My wife and I have often discussed doing something meaningful to help others after we retire. In particular, we’d like to be active in helping the homeless in some capacity. Of course, besides volunteering, we’d also like to do some traveling, particularly around the United States.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Spain. My wife and I recently visited Italy on our first trip to Europe, and Spain is next on the list.

Q: What’s your favorite dessert?
A: Birthday cake with fruit filling.

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: I’m actually trying to get rid of things these days, but I used to collect $2 bills. I got a couple of uncut bills from Washington, D.C. during a high school trip and that got me started.

Q: Would you rather live in the city or the country?
A: The country.

Q: What’s one website you visit on a daily basis?
A: Snopes.com.

  • The Importance of Backing up Computer Data

NOVATO — We all know we should floss our teeth every day, but we don’t always do it. The same goes for backing up our computer data: as important as it is, many of us either procrastinate or forget about it altogether. However, much like your teeth, if you aren’t proactive about maintaining your sensitive data, you put yourself at risk of losing it.

Data lives in a lot of places, from desktop and laptop hard drives to external drives to the cloud. Regardless of where your data lives, the important thing is that it lives in multiple locations—preferably at least three. Why? Devices can fail unexpectedly, and once your data is lost, it’s often gone forever. By copying your data to a variety of locations, if one of your devices fails, you’ll still have it saved elsewhere.

  • Video: Backing Up Your Data

    Complete Video Transcription

NOVATO — Host, Sarah Rutan: If your computer contains photos, documents and other sensitive data, you’ll want to make sure it’s fully backed up. Today we’re in Novato with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Mike Cobb of DriveSavers to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Mike Cobb: We all know we need to floss our teeth every day. But we don’t always do it. We need to also back up our data every day, but we don’t always think about it. So, what’s important? What is data? Data is what lives on your computer that you can’t live without or you don’t want to miss if it goes away. So, we need to back that up. Where is your data? It’s on your computer. It’s on a flash drive.

It’s on a RAID system if you’re in a business environment. It’s on the cloud. So, why is it important to back up? It’s important because if you lose it on whatever that device is, it’s gone forever. So, all devices fail. Your hard drive, your SSD, and your flash. SO, that’s why you want to have multiple copies onto different devices. So, if you have your data, your important data on a hard drive, back it up to a flash drive.

Back it up to an external hard drive. And then if you can, back it up to the cloud. If you have trouble making a backup or figuring out your plan to back up, call an IT professional. They’ll be more than happy to help you out. And if you promise to do that today, I’ll go home and floss my teeth.
