Sean Lin: Into the Future
By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter
FREMONT — When Sean Lin started selling cars online during the early days of the internet, he had no idea what the future had in store for his career. “Back in 2000, I was working as a website designer and photographer,” he recounts. “One of my clients was a used car dealer. Back then, most used car dealerships still relied primarily on newspaper ads to sell cars. Unfortunately, it would take about two weeks to get an ad running, so I offered to take photos of a couple of cars and put them up on my client’s website. A couple of days later, they called to tell me that both cars had already sold. Soon after, we started utilizing new websites like craigslist and eBay to sell cars. After a while, I realized I could start selling cars myself and became a dealer. I also had some experience fixing cars, so I started doing in-house repair work. From there, I started fixing cars for my friends and family, and then I started taking on outside customers. That’s how Future Auto Care was born.”
Today, as owner of Future Auto Care, Sean says his favorite part of his job is solving problems. “It’s kind of like being a doctor: You have a sick car come in and you have to diagnose and fix the problem. I enjoy the process of problem solving, going through the procedure and getting my customers back on the road.”
A resident of Fremont (where he lives with his wife, Vanessa, and their two daughters), Sean spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “I enjoy ocean fishing—I have a boat in Santa Cruz—as well as cooking. However, lately most of my free time revolves around my family. We have two young daughters, so that’s what’s important right now.”
In regard to a professional philosophy, Sean espouses the importance of two aspects. “First, honesty is crucial, especially in this industry. A lot of customers want to know what they’re being charged for, so we make it a point to be transparent and communicate with them. Timeliness is another important aspect. I’ve heard horror stories of people who waited an entire day just to get an oil change. We do our best to respect our customers’ time and complete each job in an efficient manner.”
When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Sean says he’d take to the sea. “I’d go on a long cruise to relax and think about the future. That would definitely be a dramatic change, so I’d need to take some time to figure out what’s next.”
