With seamless gutters, a contractor can actually fabricate extra pieces on the spot that fit without any joints.”

Another advantage of seamless gutter systems is their ability to reduce noise created by storms. “When you hear a dripping noise from your downspouts, it’s usually because they’re the old, square-style models,” says Mr. Calderon. “Seamless gutters have round downspouts that are angled to provide a smoother flow, which creates less noise. They’re also sloped, so debris travels through them better and is less likely to get stuck, which makes maintenance much faster and easier.”

If longevity is an important characteristic you look for in a gutter system, Mr. Calderon recommends aluminum, but he warns that even though aluminum lasts the longest, it can also be easily damaged because it’s so thin. “Aluminum doesn’t deteriorate, so it will last a lifetime, but you’re probably going to have to replace a section or two due to physical damage,” he says. “If you want a system with more strength, I recommend stainless steel gutters. The products being made today are designed to last up to 40 years, whereas old galvanized steel gutters would only last 25.”
