Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for landscape contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Jerry Allison Landscaping, Inc., the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: combine personalized service with high-quality landscaping work to produce the best possible results. “We really stress quality in everything we do,” says President Jerry Allison. “Our goal is to exceed our customers’ expectations, so it feels great when we leave a client’s house and they say, ‘This is much better than I expected it to be.'”

Jerry Allison Landscaping has been creating custom outdoor living spaces for residential clients throughout Monterey County since 1974. In addition to offering landscape design, installation and maintenance services, the company utilizes a team of in-house masons, carpenters, irrigation specialists and electricians to build decks, patios, pergolas, outdoor kitchens and other structures.

Unlike landscape contractors that hire inexperienced workers or day laborers in an effort to reduce their operating costs, Jerry Allison Landscaping only employs highly trained industry professionals, some of whom have been with the company for 30 years. “We hire qualified people who really like what they do and are proud of their workmanship,” confirms Mr. Allison. “We always get comments from customers who say they’re happy having our workers around because they’re able to have fun while still doing quality work.”

Another distinguishing feature of Jerry Allison Landscaping is its ability to work closely with its clients and design landscape features that meet their specific needs. “We determine how our customers intend to use their yards and then give them reasons to do so,” says Mr. Allison. “If a client doesn’t have a reason to spend time in their yard, we’ll suggest outdoor entertainment like a bocce court. Our job is to come up with ideas that relate to homeowners and collaborate with them to create products they’ll love for years.”

Industry Info

Install low-water plants in your garden to save water, energy and time. Gardens that incorporate native, drought-resistant plants have become increasingly popular throughout the Bay Area in recent years, both because of their water saving abilities and their low maintenance requirements. These types of plants fall into four basic categories: native, low-water, drought-resistant and drought-tolerant. To determine which type is best for your particular situation, consider the following information:

Native
“Native plants are the best plants to grow in California because they’ve acclimated to the weather and soil conditions,” explains Jerry Allison, president of Jerry Allison Landscaping, Inc. in Watsonville. “There are some other plants that do well in California, like Mediterranean-style plants from South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Chile, but I always suggest using native plants.” Most native plants require little or no irrigation or fertilizer once they’re established, and they tend to be resistant to most pests and plant diseases, which means they rarely require pest control services or disease treatment.

Low-water
Plants that require little water to thrive may not be indigenous to the Bay Area, but they’re often used by landscapers because their low water requirements fit well with our dry summers. Lavender, Echinacea, some types of Salvia, Agastache (also known as Hummingbird Mint), cacti and succulents are popular types of low-water plants. Most only require sporadic watering during the dry summer months. “Water is becoming more and more precious, and how we use it is critical to the longevity of our landscapes,” says Mr. Allison. “The goal is to install plants that still look good even though they get a minimal amount of water. In fact, many California native plants will actually rot if they get too much water in the summer, and those are the plants you should focus on.”

Drought-tolerant
Plants that can thrive with little water are often native plants that have adapted to a region’s drought-like weather conditions. Some examples are Manzanita, Sage, Wisteria, Bougainvillea and Ceantothus. Plants from other desert and low-water areas such as the Mediterranean, Australia and parts of Africa are also popular drought-tolerant choices.

Drought-resistant
These plants are sometimes referred to as chaparral. They naturally grow in areas that have very little water, and they can withstand drier areas and longer droughts than drought-tolerant plants. Many native grasses and shrubs are drought-resistant, and they look just as good during dry summers as they do after frequent rains.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can you help me choose plants for my landscaping project?

A: Absolutely. We can take you to nurseries to look at different plants, and we can also bring plants to the jobsite and see what they look like on your property. If they don’t look right, we’ll just take them away and bring in other plants at no additional charge.

Q: Will you leave my project to start another job?

A: No. When we sign a contract and start a job, we work straight through until it’s finished.

Q: How long will my landscaping project take to complete?

A: It depends on a lot of factors, but once we determine the extent of the work and set up a timeframe, we always stick to it.

Q: Do you work on weekends?

A: Occasionally we’ll work on weekends, but we try not to because we often have to pay our employees overtime, which adds to the overall cost of the project. If we have to work weekends on your project, we’ll inform you of the additional charges ahead of time.

Q: Do you work when it’s raining?

A: We’ll work in the rain if it’s a short-term situation, but if there’s a storm, we’ll take the day off to make sure we’re not wasting production. Scattered showers aren’t a problem, though—we have rain gear and we’ll just tough it out until it doesn’t make sense to continue.

Q: Why should I hire you instead of a landscape architect to do the design work?

A: Since we’re the ones who will be doing the work, we’re more closely related to the design and understand it innately. When landscape architects look at designs, they can interpret them different ways than the installers. Not only that, it’s cheaper for us to do a design and then build it because we’re not just bidding for one thing. Our main intention isn’t to do a design and send it out for different contractors to bid on—it’s to actually build a project that the client will be happy with.

Q: Is it beneficial to get a site survey of my yard?

A: Absolutely. We do site surveys as part of our design process. We have a CAD digital surveying tool that takes elevations at different site points, and we bring that information back to the office to help us with the design.

Jerry Allison: A Natural Development

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

WATSONVILLE — When Jerry Allison got his first proper landscaping job in 1974, he wasn’t new to the field; rather, it was something he’d long been acquainted with. “I’ve been doing landscaping work since I was a kid,” he remembers. “When I was 10 years old, I used to mow and edge my neighbors’ lawns, and I spent my high school years gardening to make extra money, so it was something that just came naturally to me.” Given his innate inclinations, it didn’t take long for Jerry to progress in the industry—after working at a plant nursery for two years, he got his contractor’s license and started his own landscaping business.

Today, as president of Jerry Allison Landscaping, Inc., Jerry says his favorite part of his job is bringing his clients’ projects from conception to completion. “I enjoy the process of taking something I’ve envisioned in my mind and making it a reality. That was always the most exciting aspect of the job for me, and it continues to be today.”

Having lived in a variety of locations during his childhood (mainly due to the itinerant nature of his father’s military career), when Jerry moved to Santa Cruz in 1974, he intended to stay put. Four decades later, he considers the city and its associated county an ideal environment for a landscaping professional to succeed. “There are a lot of amazing opportunities here in terms of landscaping projects, so it’s a great place to be doing what I do. Plus, this area has a lot of different soil types, which keeps things interesting and challenging.”

Outside of work, Jerry spends the bulk of his free time with his wife, Cecile, and their family. “My stepson, Scot, was the best man at our wedding, and today he works for my company as office manager and bookkeeper,” he says. “Cecile and I also have a daughter, Calla, and a grandson, Braden, who live in Southern California, so we visit them pretty regularly.” Jerry also makes it a point to stay physically active. “I swim two to three times a week and do a lot of biking with my wife. We recently agreed to do a triathlon with my daughter, so we’ve been doing a lot of swimming, running and biking in preparation.”

In his life and career, Jerry espouses the virtues of biting off more than you can chew. “Before I was a landscape contractor, I worked as a river guide,” he recounts. “When I started that job, I didn’t know what I was doing—in fact, during the first year, my coworkers called me the ‘rock magnet.’ But eventually, I learned the ropes and got really good at it. Ever since then, that’s pretty much how I’ve pursued everything: by jumping in, giving it my best effort and figuring things out as I go.”

When asked what his future retirement might look like, Jerry says he’ll have no trouble finding ways to stay busy. “I have a hard time not doing anything. For example, the first time I took time off after starting my business, Cecile and I went to Hawaii for what was supposed to be a relaxing vacation. The guy who lived next door to our rental house was in the process of building a rock wall, and I ended up helping him work on it because it looked more fun than just sitting around at the beach.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: Have you ever read a book more than once?
A: “The Catcher in the Rye.” I first read it in high school, and I picked it up again recently and really enjoyed it.

Q: What’s your favorite tree?
A: The Dawn Redwood. During a trip to New Zealand, I went to a park and found a Dawn Redwood that had been planted on the exact date that I was born, which, coincidentally, is International Arbor Day. It’s had a special place in my heart ever since.

Q: If you had a theme song, what would it be?
A: “Gettin’ By” by Jerry Jeff Walker. When I was a river guide, I used to bring my guitar along and regale my passengers by singing songs, and that was kind of my theme.

Q: What’s the strangest food you’ve ever eaten?
A: Chocolate-covered crickets.

Q: What’s your favorite newspaper comic strip?
A: “Lio.”

  • The New Paradigm of Landscape Irrigation

WATSONVILLE — After four years of drought in California, forecasts of a wet winter mean relief may finally be in sight. While the ongoing lack of rain has taken a toll on the state’s landscape production and water supply, it’s had at least one positive side effect: by forcing us to adapt our irrigation and planting techniques, it’s given us a greater sense of responsibility when it comes to our water use.

During the last four years, we’ve both improved the efficiency of our irrigation technology and implemented a more widespread usage of it. For example, many California residents are now installing water retention systems, which harvest water from home appliances like washing machines (as well as downspouts and trench drains) and reuse it for landscape irrigation. We’ve also increased the prevalence of water-efficient techniques like underground drip irrigation, which uses 60 percent less water than conventional sprinklers.

In addition to developing sophisticated irrigation technology, we’ve become more strategic in the way we plan and design our landscapes. For instance, drought-tolerant approaches like xeriscaping employ natural water-saving techniques like choosing plants that are appropriate for the local soils and microclimates. In addition to installing native plant varieties, many homeowners are installing native grass lawns, which use half as much water as conventional turf.

  • Video: The New Paradigm of Landscape Irrigation

    Complete Video Transcription

WATSONVILLE — Host, Sarah Rutan: Some people think things will simply return to normal after the California drought is over, but when it comes to landscape irrigation, what’s considered “normal” has shifted dramatically. Today we’re in Watsonville with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Jerry Allison of Jerry Allison Landscaping to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Jerry Allison: We’ve just lived through four years of drought, and although we hope this drought is over and that we can go back to normal, there’s really no normal anymore. We have all learned so much from this drought and living through it and learning to be responsible for the water that we use that all our methods have changed.

We now look at ways we can retain water on site through water retention systems. We actually have water catchment systems now that can pick up downspout water and also underground water from trench drains can be sent into cisterns, where water can be pumped out and put into the irrigation system. And not only ways of saving water and using water, but choosing appropriate plants for the soils and the microclimates in the areas on site that are most appropriate to those areas.

So as long as we can match the plants to the soils and try and use a good aesthetic approach to what we design and build, we will have long-term responsibility for what we do. There are many lawns now that are native grass lawns that use half as much as water as the old turf. And there’s underground drip irrigation systems that you can put in that use 60 percent less water than overhead sprinkler systems.

So we have learned a lot from the drought. We’ve learned to be more responsible. We’ve learned to be more careful with the use of water. And I think it will stick with us. Landscaping from here on out is different than it ever was and we’ll never go back.
