Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for drywall contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Kapple Drywall, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: take a multifaceted approach to every project to ensure the client’s specific needs are met. “We use quality products, show up on time, do what we say we’re going to do and don’t stop until the job is complete,” affirms owner Curtis Kapple. “By taking such a comprehensive approach to drywall work, we’re able to make sure our clients have better experiences and receive better finished products.”

Kapple Drywall has been providing drywall services for residential and commercial clients in Sonoma, Marin, San Francisco, and Alameda Counties since 2004. The company has the in-house capabilities to handle every step of the drywall installation and repair process, from preparation to finishing work. “We make sure each phase of a project goes smoothly, and if there are any issues, we immediately address them,” says Mr. Kapple.

Unlike less experienced drywall contractors that take a “one size fits all” approach to every project in an effort to maximize their workload volume, Kapple Drywall takes a detail-oriented approach that’s designed to ensure quality results before, during and after the job. “We take a lot of pride in our work, and that means caring about the overall quality of each project,” says Mr. Kapple. “For example, when our carpenters and painters come into a house, they know they’re going to do some touch-up work after their initial work is completed, even if the customer isn’t expecting it.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Kapple Drywall is its highly experienced technicians, all of whom are trained to utilize industry-best installation and repair techniques. “I’ve been in the drywall industry for more than 40 years, and all of my employees have a wealth of experience as well,” says Mr. Kapple. “By combining a quality staff with fair pricing and detail-oriented work, we’re able to provide our clients with higher quality products.”

Industry Info

When taking on a drywall project, make sure you hire a contractor with the requisite training and experience. When it comes to building a home, most people know their choice of architect or builder is a crucial aspect of how the final product turns out. But did you know that the drywall contractor you choose can also define the way your home looks when completed?

Experienced drywall companies can provide specialized looks. The current trends with new homes are hidden reveals around doors and windows. These are openings that have no wood casings around them, so doors and windows appear to come straight out of the wall without a designated edging. Unfortunately, even if your architect includes these hidden reveals in your building plans and your contractor installs the doors and windows correctly, they won’t look as clean and professional without the skills of a good drywall contractor.

“There’s definitely a right way to handle windows and doors that don’t have casings around them,” says Curtis Kapple, owner of Kapple Drywall in El Verano. “First, a drywall contractor needs to apply a base and then run sheetrock down to that base. Then, the contractor should use an L-shaped piece of metal at the bottom piece of the sheetrock. When it’s done correctly, it creates a clean, sophisticated look.”

Quality installation matters, even for routine drywall hanging. It’s important to hire a good drywall contractor even if you aren’t having specialty features installed in your home. You’ve probably seen walls that have dime- or quarter-sized dimples or protrusions. These are called drywall nail pops, and they’re caused when the nails move and the drywall remains in place, or when the drywall shifts but the nails stay in place, both of which cause the nails to pop out of the drywall and create ugly blemishes. There are many reasons why nail pops happen, but sub-standard drywall installation is usually the culprit. To reduce the chances of drywall pops, Mr. Kapple recommends hiring a knowledgeable drywall contractor that always uses drywall screws rather than nails.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will it take to complete my drywall project?

A: We can usually complete the drywall for an average-sized house in two weeks. That includes everything from sheetrock hanging to finishing and cleanup. Texture jobs can usually be completed faster than smooth-wall jobs because they don’t have to be sanded. Regardless of your type of project, we’ll give you a specific time estimate before we start working.

Q: How do you secure drywall?

A: We use screws instead of nails to eliminate nail pops, which are bubbles or blisters in drywall that are caused when drywall nails loosen and the drywall moves. Screws pop sometimes, but nails pop all the time, so we use screws to reduce the chances of this happening.

Q: Can you repair dents or dings in my drywall?

A: Yes, and that usually only takes one day to complete.

Q: Can you provide specialty drywall textures?

A: Absolutely. We do high-end smooth walls; imperfect smooth walls; and hidden base, door, and window details that are very clean and simple-looking. We can also handle the drywall around non-case doors and windows.

Q: Is there anything I can do to speed up the drywall drying process?

A: Yes, heat and ventilation make drywall dry faster. The warmer the house and the more ventilation in the rooms, the faster the drywall will dry. So, you can leave your HVAC system on, plug in heaters and fans, or use other methods to warm and ventilate your home while the drywall is drying.

Q: Who is responsible for the quality of my job?

A: Our owner, Curtis Kapple, personally oversees every project and makes sure everything is going according to plan.

Curtis Kapple: Mud and Numbers

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

EL VERANO — Every kid likes to play with mud, but for Curtis Kapple, this took on a whole different meaning. “My father was a drywall contractor and started teaching me the trade when I was about five years old,” he explains. “By the time I was 10, I was mudding and taping, and by age 14, I was doing finish work. I spent all my weekends and summers throughout high school working full-time.”

After high school, Curtis went to college and studied accounting, but the idea of spending his workdays at a desk didn’t appeal to him, so after graduating, he returned to the trade he knew. “I stuck with drywall for a couple of reasons,” he explains. “Number one, I already had experience, so I could start back up as a journeyman and make a nice income. Number two, I couldn’t sit still when I was that age, so being cooped up in a cubicle all day just wasn’t going to happen.”

Even though he never became an accountant, Curtis’ college education nonetheless gave him an advantage in his professional livelihood. “A lot of drywall contractors are really good at drywall, but they struggle when it comes to the numbers and paperwork,” he says. “My experience with accounting really helped me in that regard because it gave me an edge over my competitors.”

Today, as owner of Kapple Drywall, Curtis says he enjoys the varied and fast-paced nature of his work. “I like the fact that we’re on different jobsites all the time. Usually, we’re in and out within two or three weeks, so we get to see a lot of different homes and meet a lot of different people, which keeps things interesting.”

Born and raised in Marin County, Curtis resides today in Sonoma County, where he appreciates the ample opportunities to demonstrate his professional proficiency. “I like that there are a lot of high-end homes in this area because it provides us with a lot of work,” he says. “Not only is the money good, but the customers are looking for quality, so it really gives us a chance to shine at what we do.”

Outside of work, Curtis engages in a number of active hobbies and pastimes. “I go to the gym regularly and I’m an avid golfer—I actually have a single digit handicap,” he says. “I also love to go fishing and crabbing in my boat. In just the last couple of weeks, I’ve been steelhead fishing in the Russian River and sturgeon fishing in the bay.” Another of Curtis’ favorite pastimes is working with his hands. “I love doing projects, whether it’s working on my house or on one of my boats. It’s like my therapy.”

In his life and career, Curtis espouses the importance of professional integrity. “Everyone makes mistakes, but it’s how you handle your mistakes that determines what kind of person you are,” he asserts. “You don’t walk away from your mistakes—you take care of them. As long as you do that, customers will hire you, because they know that, no matter what, you’re going to make things right.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Curtis says he’d devote more time to the activities he currently enjoys. “I’d still go to the gym, golf and go fishing. I’d also probably do some more traveling.”

  • Three Types of Drywall Compound

EL VERANO — If you’re planning a drywall project, one important consideration is the type of compound or “mud” you plan to use. Drywall compound comes in a few different classes, so it’s crucial to choose the right product for the specific application. Here are three key types of compounds:

    1. Taping compound is designed to allow for easy application of drywall tape to joints and angles. It’s basically 90 percent glue and can’t really be sanded, so you shouldn’t use this type of compound for your finishing coat.

    2. Topping compound is designed for finish coat applications, as it’s specifically formulated for minimal shrinkage and easy sanding.

    3. “All-purpose” compound combines the characteristics of taping and topping compounds in order to be usable in any phase of application. While not ideal for large or high-end jobs, this compound can work well for smaller jobs where detail is less important. If you want a fast drying time, a lightweight all-purpose compound can be a good choice.

EL VERANO — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re planning a drywall project in your home, you’ll want to be aware of the different types and grades of products available. Today we’re in El Verano with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Curtis Kapple of Kapple Drywall to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Curtis Kapple: These are the main products we use. This is what we call “Blue Dot.” It’s the first coat of taping that you put on it. This is 90% glue. You can’t really sand it. It’s what the nail should be spotted with the first time and the tape should be put on with. This is “Green Dot.”

I don’t use any lightweight products, as, in my opinion, they leave too many air bubbles, too easy to scratch. This is a more solid product, tried, true, and tested. A little harder to sand, but the finish, in my opinion, is twice as good as the lightweight products. The only lightweight product I use is in hot mud. We try not to use this as much as possible. In this house there is maybe one bag of hot mud used, as we needed sandability everywhere. On smaller jobs, we do use this in order to speed up the drying time.
