Paul James: From Avocation to a Vocation
By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter
FREMONT — While Paul James initially regarded his interest in horticulture as a mere hobby, he later turned his avocation into a lifelong career. It all stemmed from his first job at a local plant nursery. “When I turned 16, I started working at a nursery down the street from my house,” he remembers. “At first, I was just loading plants into customers’ cars and that sort of thing. Then customers started asking me how to choose and care for plants, and over time, I learned a lot and became more interested in gardening and landscaping. I certainly thought of it more as a hobby than a career, but that all changed when I went to college, where I studied landscape architecture. After graduating with my master’s degree, I started working in the field, and I’ve been designing landscapes for 25 years now.”
Today, as senior landscape designer at Koch & Associates, Inc., Paul says he enjoys working with a well-rounded team. “Our crews are well-versed in many areas of construction, so when we’re tasked with putting together an elaborate project, we’re able to deliver the whole package. My favorite part of the job is seeing the client excited about the finished product.”
A resident of Pleasant Hill (where he lives with his husband, Jonathan, and their dog, Rhaegar), Paul spends his free time engaged in activities related to the stage and screen. “I’ve acted in community theater on and off over the years,” he details. “It’s been a while since I’ve been on stage, but I regularly get together with a group that does play readings, which serves to satisfy my acting bug. I’m also a bit of a film buff—I like to keep up with the Oscars and enjoy watching and critiquing the nominated films.”
In regard to a personal philosophy, Paul espouses the virtues of keeping a positive mindset. “I’m an optimist, so I try to maintain a positive outlook and not worry about things I can’t control. Whether it’s an important meeting with a client or a tight project deadline, it’s easy to fret about all the ways things could go wrong, but instead I choose to focus on the ways they can go right. I believe this mindset is a key component of success.”
When asked what he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Paul says he’d see the world. “I would definitely go traveling with my husband. There are lots of places I’d like to visit, including the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Greece, New Zealand and South America.”
