I have recommended them to many friends. They are easy to communicate with, and we make a plan. If anything changes, they always call you back. The communication is always good, and they are very good listeners. They come up with better ways of doing projects. I didn't know how I wanted to do my project, and they came up with ideas that were better than mine that worked and were beautiful. They did concrete and paving both for me. They are licensed and registered when a lot of other contractors aren't. He guarantees his work. The work was really good, and I am very happy with it.

Their price was good, the quality of work was good, and everything went as planned. I like the owner, David. He got along with both my wife and I extremely well. He was easy to talk to, and he was very pleasant. I haven't seen a contractor work as well as they have.

David Figueroa, Owner

Kodiak Construction provides a wide range of concrete installation and repair services for residential and commercial clients throughout the Bay Area. In addition to handling every step of its customers’ patio, walkway and driveway projects, the company has the in-house capabilities to build retaining walls, perform foundation work and more.

Estimator Michael Figueroa says that although Kodiak Construction has undergone considerable growth during its two decades in business, it continues to embrace the values and principles that have defined it since the beginning. “My father, David Figueroa, started Kodiak Construction more than 20 years ago, and even though we’ve grown in size since then, we’ve kept our humble attitude. With every project, we adhere to the fundamentals of doing high-quality work and making our customers happy.”

Kodiak Construction also has the training and equipment to install decorative concrete, which Mr. Figueroa says brings an element of artistry to the company’s capabilities. “These days, there are almost unlimited colors and patterns to choose from for decorative concrete. By the time we’re finished with an installation, it looks more like a work of art than a driveway or patio.”

Company Philosophy

“We truly believe our clients are always right, so we do whatever it takes to make sure they’re satisfied with our work. We always keep them updated throughout their projects so they know what to expect, and we never leave a job until it’s 100 percent complete.”

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for concrete contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. Kodiak Construction believes the best way to achieve high levels of customer satisfaction is to offer the type of personalized service that can only come from a family-owned and operated company. “My father, brother and I run the business together, and we bring our extensive knowledge and family bond to every job,” says Estimator Michael Figueroa. “Our clients know we’ll be giving our absolute best at every phase of their projects, and they really appreciate that type of dedication.”

Kodiak Construction has been providing concrete installation and repair services for residential and commercial clients throughout the East Bay, Napa County, and Marin County since 1995. The company has the training and equipment to handle every step of its customers’ patio, walkway, and driveway projects, and it’s also qualified to build retaining walls, perform foundation work, and more.

Unlike concrete companies that only focus on one aspect of their clients’ projects and rely on subcontractors to complete the work, Kodiak Construction utilizes its concrete, carpentry and drainage experience to effectively manage the entire process in-house. “We understand the importance of building the whole home, not just the patio,” says Mr. Figueroa. “For example, we know how the concrete will affect the area adjacent to the patio in terms of drainage, which impacts our preparation and installation methods. The techniques we use are designed to positively impact our clients’ properties.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Kodiak Construction is its dedication to remaining on each client’s project until all work is complete, which Mr. Figueroa says isn’t always a given in the industry. “Some concrete contractors accept a down payment, start the job and then disappear for days or weeks at a time before coming back to finish it. We never work that way–once we provide a timeline and start working, we stick to the project and make sure the client is completely satisfied before moving on.”

Industry Info

If you’re thinking about installing concrete on your property, consider a custom installation that involves patterns, colors and unique styles. Gone are the days of the “one application fits all” approach to walkways, driveways, patios and other concrete surfaces. Today, there are a range of decorative applications that can make your home’s exterior and interior concrete surfaces unique and beautiful, including stamped concrete, colored concrete, colored overlays and concrete stain, and control joint designs. “There are a lot of great modern designs, like broom-finished concrete, which involves using a broom to create patterns and form in fresh concrete so it stands out more,” explains Michael Figueroa, estimator at Kodiak Construction in Martinez. “Regardless of your aesthetic preference, you have plenty of options.”

Applications like stamped concrete and colored overlays are popular when it comes to patios, pool decks, interior concrete flooring and countertops, walkways, and driveways. In part, the popularity stems from the affordability of concrete and its reputation as a long-lasting medium. Now, with the ability to customize the color and appearance, homeowners are finding new pride in their concrete surfaces.

Types of decorative concrete techniques

  • Stamped concrete has long been popular with homeowners. With this method, contractors press a stamp into wet concrete to create a pattern or texture. Stamped concrete can resemble natural stone, brick, wood, tile and other patterns.
  • Concrete staining uses acid- or water-based stains to alter the color of the concrete.
  • Colored concrete is dyed before or shortly after it’s poured, which creates a uniform color throughout the surface.
  • Polished concrete is popular for interior floors and countertops. When coupled with added and natural aggregates in concrete, polishing gives a smooth and even shiny finish.
  • Engraving concrete with saws or specialty grinder blades creates patterns, designs and grooves in the surface. This treatment can make concrete look like brick, cobblestone or natural stone.
  • Decorative overlays can be applied to new or existing concrete surfaces. These overlays can include designs, colors, textures or other specialty features.

David Figueroa: It’s a Hardscape Life

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

MARTINEZ — After getting an early start in construction, David Figueroa worked in several aspects of the industry before eventually finding his niche as a concrete contractor. “I started doing construction when I was in junior high school, and I’ve been doing it ever since—more than 40 years now,” he says. “I got into concrete work in the early ’80s, but it wasn’t until the early 2000s that I had the opportunity to do it exclusively. Since then, our business has continued to grow, and I now work alongside my son, Michael, who is one of our estimators.”

Today, as owner of Kodiak Construction, David explains why he likes working with concrete in particular. “As a guy who likes to move around a lot, I appreciate the fact that concrete work is fairly fast-paced. You don’t have to wait three months to see the final product; you can see it right away and then you’re on to the next job. Also, you can do beautiful things with concrete, with a lot of room for creativity. There’s no mold for it—every project is different.”

Originally from Mexico, David came to the United States at the age of 20 and today resides in Martinez with his wife, Jane. “I really like the Bay Area setting: the weather is good, we’re surrounded by water and we have many different microclimates. For example, when it’s really hot in Martinez, you can go on the other side of the channel to San Francisco and it’s much cooler.”

In his life and career, David espouses the importance of honesty in business. “You have to be honest and straightforward with your customers,” he affirms. “When there’s a problem, you don’t hide from it; you do your best to take care of it. Sometimes, even when you try your hardest, things don’t work out as planned, but at the end of the day, if you’re honest and follow through with what you say you’re going to do, your customers will be satisfied.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, David says he’d do some traveling. “In addition to seeing more of the U.S., I’d like to spend some time in Mexico, just fishing and enjoying the simple life.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Italy. I’ve always wanted to go there.

Q: What kind of food do you like?
A: Mexican—basically, anything with a tortilla.

Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?
A: An early bird.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
A: I usually don’t eat breakfast, although sometimes I’ll stop for a donut and coffee.

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: I collect gold and silver coins.

  • Considerations for Concrete Installation

MARTINEZ — When installing a concrete feature such as a driveway or patio, it’s crucial to follow proper procedure—otherwise, the installation will be susceptible to settling over time. Here are a few important aspects to consider:

    • Whether it’s plain soil or base rock, the subgrade (the native soil) needs to be properly compacted. Ideally, base rock should be compacted to a 98 percent proctor density, which will provide a solid surface for the concrete to lie upon.

    • If the native soil doesn’t provide an adequate subgrade material, a fill alternative like sand, gravel or crushed stone may be necessary to achieve the low compressibility needed to support the concrete installation.

    • To provide maximum reinforcement, the steel rebar should be placed at center depth of the concrete slab. For example, if the slab is four inches thick, the rebar should be placed at a depth of roughly two inches.

  • Video: The Importance of Soil Compaction

    Complete Video Transcription

MARTINEZ — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re installing a new concrete driveway or patio, don’t overlook the importance of the soil base beneath it. Today we’re in Martinez with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor David Figueroa of Kodiak Construction to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, David Figueroa: When you do a concrete driveway or patio, make sure the subbase is compacted, whether it’s just plain soil or it’s base rock. And make sure it’s drained first. And the rebar should be on the middle of the concrete. If it’s four inches thick, should be somewhere between one and a half and two inches into the concrete. And get it back to compact. And if you don’t compact the sub-soil, eventually the water will get on the patio, the driveway and the concrete will tend to sink.
