I liked them in general. They're a good business. We're also a small business, so we like that about them.

Dan Skiles Jr., Owner

Master’s Touch Upholstery provides a wide range of reupholstery services for residential and commercial clients in Sonoma, Napa, Marin, Mendocino, and Lake Counties. In addition to reupholstering all types of modern and antique furniture, the company has the in-house capabilities to make custom products like headboards.

Owner Dan Skiles Jr. says Master’s Touch Upholstery’s small size allows him to complete projects as quickly and efficiently as possible. “A lot of upholstery companies leave their customers’ furniture sitting around their shops for months, but I have what it takes to get the job done in a couple of weeks. I really enjoy taking a broken-down piece, bringing it back to life and seeing the look on the client’s face when they realize they have brand-new furniture to enjoy.”

Master’s Touch Upholstery offers a comprehensive warranty on upholstery fabric that’s treated with Fiber ProTector® Bay Area, one of the most technically advanced fiber protection systems on the market. “Fiber ProTector prolongs the life of upholstery, provides easier spot removal, effectively shields against oil- and water-based stains, and improves professional cleaning,” says Mr. Skiles. “Not only does it save time and money, it also provides peace of mind.”

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for upholstery companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Master’s Touch Upholstery, keeping customers happy is all about ensuring quality at every phase of the upholstery process. “In addition to delivering a high-quality product, I want to make sure every customer has a positive experience,” says owner Dan Skiles. “It really bothers me when a client is unhappy with something, even if it’s a minor detail, so I always strive to do things in a way that will ensure total customer satisfaction.”

Master’s Touch Upholstery has been providing re-upholstery services for residential and commercial clients in Sonoma, Marin, Napa, Mendocino, and Lake Counties since 1985. In addition to re-upholstering all types of modern and antique furniture, the company has the training and equipment to make headboards and other custom products.

Unlike less experienced upholstery companies that take on too many projects and leave their customers waiting as a result, Master’s Touch Upholstery focuses on providing a timely turnaround without sacrificing the quality of its work. “A lot of my customers complain about how long other upholstery shops take to finish their jobs,” says Mr. Skiles. “These shops might spend several months trying to recover a chair, whereas I can complete the same project in two or three weeks. I always strive to provide a quick turnaround while doing excellent work.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Master’s Touch Upholstery is its detail-oriented approach to upholstery work, which Mr. Skiles says allows him to ensure the best possible results. “I start by addressing the internal parts that no one ever sees and build the quality from there. I never cut corners, I only use top-of-the-line materials, and when the job is finished, I closely inspect it to make sure nothing was missed.”

Industry Info

Prior to having a piece of furniture re-upholstered, make sure it’s a worthwhile investment. If you have a favorite chair or sofa that’s fallen into disrepair, you may be considering having it professionally re-upholstered. However, due to the considerable cost of re-upholstery work, it’s important to consider whether the end justifies the means. “If a piece of furniture is well-made and isn’t too damaged, it can usually be restored to ‘good as new’ condition,” says Dan Skiles, owner of Master’s Touch Upholstery in Santa Rosa. “However, restoring a piece is usually more expensive than simply buying a new one, so if your piece isn’t special in some way, it might not make sense to pay the extra cost.”

Here are some scenarios where re-upholstery may be a worthwhile investment:

  • The piece is an antique.
  • The piece is a unique, custom-made or high-end item.
  • The piece is a family heirloom or otherwise has sentimental value.
  • The piece is part of a matching set and can’t be replaced.
  • The piece is of a particular size or design that’s hard to come by.

While any of the aforementioned scenarios may justify the cost of re-upholstery, one instance where it’s seldom worthwhile is with cheaply made, mass-produced furniture. “A lot of furniture stores are selling disposable furniture these days, and those products are so low-quality that re-upholstering them would just be a waste of money,” says Mr. Skiles. “If the frame isn’t good quality to begin with, there’s no point in having it re-covered.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much will it cost to re-upholster my furniture?

A: It depends on the nature of the project. If you email me a couple of pictures of the item you want re-upholstered, I can put together a quote that will give you an idea of how much the job will cost.

Q: Can you repair my upholstery?

A: Yes, I do all kinds of repair work, from fixing damage caused by pets to repairing items damaged in the commercial shipping process.

Q: Can you restore my chair’s cushion?

A: Absolutely. A lot of chairs come with cheap foam cushions that don’t last very long, so I can replace yours with a durable, high-resilience foam product.

Q: Can you explain my fabric options?

A: Yes, I have a variety of fabrics on display in my showroom, and I’d be happy to explain the differences in terms of durability, tightness of weave, and other attributes.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Dan Skiles Jr.

Dan Skiles Jr.: Mastering the Craft

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SANTA ROSA — In the years following his employment at an upholstery shop, Dan Skiles Jr. went from sweeping floors to mastering a time-honored craft. “After graduating from high school, I got a job at a local upholstery place, where I started off pushing a broom and making deliveries,” he remembers. “Pretty soon, I moved up to stripping furniture and started learning how to sew. Along the way, one of the old-timers took me under his wing and taught me the finer points of the craft. In 1985, I started Master’s Touch Upholstery and have been here ever since.”

Today, Dan says that although shifts in popular consumption have had a diminishing effect on the upholstery trade, it has also created a more specialized niche for the craft’s remaining practitioners. “These days, most people don’t take their sofas to be reupholstered—they just buy a new one. As a result, there’s not nearly as many upholstery shops as there used to be. However, there are still plenty of people who have high-end or antique furniture they don’t want to get rid of, which helps keep us in business.”

A lifelong resident of the North Bay Area, Dan resides today in Santa Rosa with his wife, Cheryl, where he appreciates the luxuriant local landscape. “Here in Sonoma County, we have some of the most beautiful countryside around,” he asserts. “As a lover of the outdoors, I enjoy driving around and taking in the scenic beauty.”

Outside of work, Dan enjoys a number of hobbies and activities, including gardening, fishing, raising birds and playing guitar for his church’s worship band. “I like gardening on my property and fishing for largemouth bass at Clear Lake,” he affirms. “I also raise Indian Fantail pigeons, which I show, judge and sell.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Dan espouses the importance of integrity. “When we open up a piece of furniture, we have to make decisions depending on what we find,” he explains. “An upholstery shop can either cut corners and go the cheap route or do it in a way that yields long-lasting performance. By staying committed to the latter approach, we consistently do right by our customers.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Dan says he would continue enjoying the things that currently occupy his free time. “I would spend more time tending to my garden and birds, as well as fishing. I’ve never been much for traveling—I’m just happy being out in the fresh air and among growing things.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite snack?
A: My mom’s chocolate chip cookies.

Q: What’s your favorite holiday?
A: Christmas—it has religious significance for me and it’s a time for family to get together.

  • Considerations for Upholstery Cushions

SANTA ROSA — When it comes to reupholstering a chair or sofa, one aspect that’s sometimes overlooked is the cushion. However, a cushion can have a significant impact on how a piece of furniture looks and functions, so it’s important to look beyond the fabric and regard what lies beneath.

Few people realize that a cushion can make or break an upholstery project. Whether it doesn’t fit correctly or wasn’t properly installed, a cushion can make the entire job look bad. Additionally, a poorly installed cushion is often uncomfortable, which can defeat the purpose of having a piece of furniture in the first place. To avoid such issues, discuss your cushion options with an upholstery specialist and, if needed, do a little research before making your final decision.

Once your upholstery project has been completed, you’ll want it to last as long as possible. A good proactive measure in this regard is to regularly flip your cushion(s) over to ensure equal wear on both sides. Keep in mind that this pertains not only to the cushion’s cover, but also to the filler material inside. If you have a sofa, the cushions should also be reversed end to end (due to the way people tend to sit on sofas).

  • Video: Considerations for Upholstery Cushions

    Complete Video Transcription

SANTA ROSA — Host, Sarah Rutan: When having a piece of furniture re-upholstered, one important aspect to address is its cushion. Today we’re in Santa Rosa with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Dan Skiles of Master’s Touch Upholstery to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Dan Skiles Jr.: A cushion can make or break a project, whether it’s a chair, or a loveseat, or a sofa. If a cushion is done wrong or that doesn’t fit, whether it was done poorly, it can make a whole job look bad. You can do a reasonably good job of upholstering the sofa, for example; if the cushions are done bad, then the whole thing looks shoddy.

Another thing about cushions would be that if you sit on a cushion and it’s uncomfortable, then it kind of breaks the whole purpose of having the furniture in the first place. If it it’s too soft, too hard, or in some other way it makes you uncomfortable, then nobody’s going to want to sit on it.

The other thing i would say about cushions would be, you must reverse them regularly. If you have a chair cushion, it should be flipped over fairly regularly in order to make it last a long time – or long as possible; make it wear out equally on both sides – not only the cover, but the filler inside

You need to reverse the cushion fairly regularly. If you have a sofa, and somebody tends to sit on one end, then the cushion should not only be flipped over; they should be reversed end to end, to make sure that all the cushions last equally – and therefore, the whole job lasts longer

I’ve had people come in that – they just wore out one side of one cushion on a sofa of three cushions. It can really speed up the deterioration of the job when you do that.
