He was very personable and did a very nice job. The carpets are older, but he did a good job and discussed future carpet purchases with us. He gave us advice on what type of carpet to purchase.

He was on time, courteous, friendly, and efficient. He got it done quickly and didn't leave the carpets too wet. He used a lot of extraction to get the water out of the carpets. He also had us do the right thing by having us open the doors and windows so that the carpets would dry faster.

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for carpet cleaning companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Maximum Carpet Cleaning, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: instill confidence in each client by taking a detail-oriented approach to their job, regardless of its size. “My customers appreciate the fact that I do quality work and take the time to establish relationships with them,” says owner Dave Steely. “This is a family-owned and operated business, so they know they’re going to get someone who has a vested interest in their satisfaction.”

Maximum Carpet Cleaning has been cleaning carpet, upholstery, area rugs, and tile and grout for residential and commercial clients throughout Central Contra Costa County since 2006. The company exclusively uses the hot water extraction cleaning method, which is designed to deep-clean without the use of soap or harsh chemicals, and it’s available 24/7 to clean water-damaged surfaces.

Unlike carpet cleaning companies that hire inexperienced workers in an effort to reduce their operating costs, Maximum Carpet Cleaning provides the expertise of an IICRC Certified cleaner on every job. “I take a lot of pride in being IICRC Certified,” affirms Mr. Steely. “To achieve the status of Master Textile Cleaner, I had to earn certification in areas like upholstery cleaning, leather cleaning and spot dyeing, which means I’m a specialist in everything I do.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Maximum Carpet Cleaning is its commitment to staying at the forefront of industry innovation. “My goal is to give my customers the best of what the carpet cleaning industry has to offer,” says Mr. Steely. “By researching new products, attending supplementary education courses and reading about upcoming developments, I’m able to do just that.”

Industry Info

If you need your carpets cleaned, consider the benefits of hot water extraction. As the carpet cleaning industry has continued to develop over the years, innovation has led to numerous cleaning methods, and one of the most common is hot water extraction. Sometimes erroneously referred to as “steam cleaning,” hot water extraction uses a combination of high water pressure and hot water to ensure a thorough cleaning. According to Dave Steely, owner of Maximum Carpet Cleaning in Concord, hot water extraction offers many practical benefits. “This method gets as much dirt out of carpet as possible while leaving minimal residual moisture,” he explains. “Whereas some methods can leave a carpet wet for days, with hot water extraction, drying usually takes place within an eight-hour period.”

Besides being an inconvenience, a carpet that stays wet for an extended period of time can result in other, more serious issues. “When a carpet remains saturated for too long, it can lead to mold or mildew growth,” says Mr. Steely. “You might start to notice a moldy odor and, in some cases, when you pull up the carpet, you’ll see mold on the backing, which is a health hazard for everyone in your house.”

In addition to leaving carpets drier, another benefit of hot water extraction is that it’s approved by most carpet manufacturers. “In many cases, a carpet’s warranty will only be good if the owner uses a manufacturer-approved method like hot water extraction,” says Mr. Steely. “By hiring a company that uses an alternative method like Chem-Dry, you could potentially void your carpet’s warranty.” To avoid this, be sure to review your carpet warranty before hiring a carpet cleaning company.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will you be here at the scheduled appointment time?
A: We understand how valuable your time is, so we strive to be on time every time. If there’s a delay for any reason, we’ll let you know immediately.

Q: Can you remove any type of stain?
A: We can remove most stains, but if it sounds complicated, we may need to come to your house and look at it before giving you an answer.

Q: What if a stain reappears after you’ve treated it?
A: If a stain reappears, give us a call—we’ll come back and clean it again.

Q: Can you get rid of pet urine odor?
A: Yes, we use a deodorizer to remove odors caused by dog or cat urine. Besides getting rid of the smell, the deodorizer decreases the chance of your pet going back to that same spot because it’s no longer a marked territory for them.

Q: How long will my carpet be wet after you clean it?
A: Our hot water extraction method allows us to clean carpet with a minimal amount of residual moisture, so your carpet should be fully dry within eight hours.

Q: What if I have an emergency and need my carpet to dry faster?
A: That’s no problem—we can leave fans to speed up the drying process, and we’ll come by later to pick them up.

Q: Do you use organic products?
A: Yes. We originally switched to organic products because some of our old products had a very strong smell that was irritating some of our customers. Our organic carpet cleaning products are odorless, highly effective and completely safe.

Dave Steely: Maximum Integrity

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Program Reporter

CONCORD — Dave Steely started cleaning carpets right out of high school, but it took him a while to find businesses that shared his personal values and professional integrity. “Back then, the bait-and-switch tactic was very prominent, with fly-by-night companies closing as fast as they were opening,” he recalls. “One time, I showed up to work to find the door padlocked because the IRS had seized the property. Another time, I showed up to an empty building—the company owner had skipped town without paying us. It wasn’t long before I decided this was no way to make a living.”

Fortunately, rather than giving up, Dave started doing some research and found that even though there were less-than-virtuous carpet cleaning companies out there, there were also many legitimate businesses that held a high regard for customer satisfaction. “Once I realized I could actually earn a living doing quality work with a reputable company, I began to see more of a future in the industry,” he says. “I spent some time working for a couple of the major carpet cleaning companies, but eventually I decided I could do even better on my own and started my own business.”

Today, as owner of Maximum Carpet Cleaning, Dave says his favorite part of his job is the instant gratification it provides. “Since carpet cleaning provides immediate results, I get to see my hard work pay off right away. Even better, I get to see my clients’ reactions when they see how I’ve transformed their dirty carpets, so that’s very satisfying.”

Having migrated from San Mateo to Concord in 2005 (where he lives with his wife, Michelle, and their sons, Brandon and Anthony), Dave says he appreciates the area’s comparatively slow-paced character. “We moved to Concord when our boys were young because we wanted to give them more opportunities to be outdoors. Ten years later, we continue to enjoy its quiet, small-town atmosphere.”

Outside of work, Dave likes spending time with his family, especially on outdoor excursions. “We have a motor home, so we like to take road trips and go camping,” he affirms. “Michelle and I enjoy taking short trips to the coast when we get a chance, and the boys and I like going go to campgrounds and areas where we can ride our dirt bikes.”

In his professional career, Dave espouses the importance of designating enough time to ensure customer satisfaction. “One of the best parts of working for myself is I’m able to make my own schedule,” he says. “Since I don’t have that pressure to hurry from one job to the next, I can devote as much time as necessary to ensure a quality job for each client. I understand that time equals money, but in the end, customer satisfaction is the most important thing.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Dave says he’d hit the open road. “The first thing I’d do is pack up the motor home and take off on a cross-country trip with my family. Maybe we’d head north toward the Oregon Coast and just see where we end up.”

  • A Thorough Procedure for Preventing Carpet Stains

CONCORD — Spills on the carpet are never anticipated, but knowing what to do in the event of one can help you prevent a permanent stain. Follow this thorough stain prevention procedure:

    1. With a tightly folded, 100 percent cotton towel, begin blotting the affected area. Why 100 percent cotton? Because cotton is the most absorbent material—much more so than nylon carpet. As you blot (don’t scrub, it’ll only spread the stain), rotate the towel as each section becomes inundated with liquid. Depending on how much liquid there is, you might need a second towel.

    2. Once you’ve reached a point where your towel ceases to absorb liquid, take some table salt and spread a generous amount over the area. Gently rub your hand over the carpet fibers to further spread the salt. After letting the salt sit for 15 minutes, run your vacuum over the area to remove it.

    3. Using a simple mixture of one part white distilled vinegar, two parts water and a splash of dishwashing liquid, wet a new towel and blot the affected area. Keep an eye out for color transfer—it’ll tell you if your towel is still picking up anything from the carpet.

    4. When you see you’re no longer getting any color transfer, place a dry cotton towel over the affected area and put something heavy on top of it (equivalent to the weight of a 1-gallon water jug). A plastic container works best; don’t use wood or metal containers, as they can potentially stain the carpet themselves. Leave that to set for at least an hour, allowing it to absorb any remaining residue in the carpet. Finally, after letting the carpet sit for 24 hours, run a vacuum over the area to reinvigorate the fibers.

  • How to Properly Vacuum an Area Rug

PLEASANT HILL — If you own a fine wool, Oriental or Persian area rug, you obviously want to preserve its beauty and integrity. The simplest way to do this is by vacuuming it regularly. However, it’s not enough to merely take a quick pass with your vacuum cleaner every so often. Fine rug fibers (wool fibers in particular) tend to trap a lot of dry soil, so it takes a thorough job to actually get the rug clean. Follow this procedure for vacuuming your fine area rug:

    1. Adjust your vacuum to an appropriate height. If the vacuum’s level is set too low, it can create a suction seal to the rug, which actually makes it less effective at pulling up dirt. You want to allow a little air in between the vacuum and the rug, so if it’s noticeably hard to push, raise the level up a bit.

    2. Take multiple passes over the top side of the rug. Start with two complete up-and-down vertical passes. Go nice and slow to give the vacuum time to pull up as much dirt as possible. Next, take a couple of side-to-side passes—this way, you’re sure to hit those fibers from every angle.

    3. Vacuum the bottom side of the rug. Even if the bottom side of the rug hasn’t been tread upon, it may still be harboring a lot of dust and soil. Move the rug and sweep the floor beneath to provide a clean surface. Next, flip the rug over and take a few passes with your vacuum to pull out the soil.

    4. Take a final pass over the top side. After vacuuming the back side of the rug, flip it over again and go over the top once more. Don’t worry about going slow or coming from different angles—this is just a quick final pass for good measure.

Depending on your lifestyle, you should perform this procedure every one to three months. For instance, if you have children or pets, or the rug is in a high-traffic area, you should probably do it more frequently. By following proper procedure, you’ll preserve your fine area rug for the long-term.

  • Video: The Proper Way to Vacuum an Area Rug

    Complete Video Transcription

PLEASANT HILL — Host, Sarah Rutan: In order to maintain a fine area rug, you need to know the proper way to vacuum it. Today we’re in Pleasant Hill with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Dave Steely of Maximum Carpet Care to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Dave Steely: So, here’s a pro tip for all you homeowners with area rugs. Today we’re going to talk about the proper way to vacuum your area rugs, especially wools, Orientals, Persians, things of that nature. Wool fibers tend to trap a lot of dry soil in there. Most homeowners will take their vacuum cleaner and just do a quick single pass right over the rug and think that that’s good enough. Well, it’s not. You really need to thoroughly vacuum these rugs. In order to get all the dry soil out of them, it’s going to require to go a little bit slower, make multiple passes.

So, the first thing you’re going to want to do is allow your vacuum to work properly. The way you do that is by adjusting the height to the thickness of your area rug. If your vacuum is set too low and it becomes too hard to push, it’s actually not moving air, it’s not breaking up the dust, it’s not pulling anything, it is simply creating a suction almost like a seal to the area rug itself and will not remove any of the soil. So, you got to adjust that correctly. Then we’re going to go over it nice and slow. You’re going to go up once, bring it back. So, make two complete passes on there, and then we’re going to go in different directions. You’re going to go up and down vertically, then we’re going to go side to side to make sure we’re hitting those fibers from every angle.

Once that is done, once we’re finished vacuuming the top of the rug, we can lift the rug up, and sometimes we’ll see visible dry soil underneath the rug. At that point we’re going to want to sweep the floor to remove that, get rid of all that, flip the rug over, and then vacuum the other side. When we vacuum from behind, we will pull even more soil out of there. So, then we flip it back over once again, we’ll be back to the surface of the rug, and then we’ll go over it one more time not quite as aggressively, not quite as slowly, just to vacuum it and finish it off.

This is a process that should be done probably about every one to three months, depending on your lifestyle: depending on if you have kids, pets, is the rug being used every day, where is it located at, things of that nature. And again, this is all something to help preserve the life of your rug. So, just follow these simple steps, and this will go a long way to properly maintaining your area rugs in between professional cleanings.

  • Video: Cleaning Spills on Your Carpet

    Complete Video Transcription

CONCORD — Host, Sarah Rutan: When a spill occurs on your carpet, knowing how to deal with it properly can make all the difference in preventing a permanent stain. Today we’re in Concord with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Dave Steely of Maximum Carpet Cleaning to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Dave Steely: So, today, we’re going to address what to do when something gets spilt on your carpet. This is the proper way to absorb – and this can be any kind of liquid. For this demonstration we’re going to use red wine – which is unfortunately a common occurrence with our clients – but anything will do.

We got a little bit of a red wine spill here. So, first thing you want to do is grab a one hundred percent cotton towel. You’re going to place that towel right on top of the affected area. Now, cotton is much more absorbent than your nylon carpet. So, as you can see, we’re getting color transfer, and that’s what we’re looking for. So, we’re going to rotate that towel, and we’re just going to keep blotting. We’re trying to get as much liquid out of here as we possibly can. Now, this may take one or two towels, maybe more depending on how much liquid. But, we just keep repeating, repeating, repeating.

Once we’ve got it to the point where we’re no longer getting any transfer, we’re going to just kind of lightly spread this apart. We’re going to grab some table salt, and we’re going to put a generous amount of salt on there. The salt is going to absorb the liquid. So, what we want to do – once we get it on – we’re going to spread that carpet again, let that salt work its way all the way down to the back end of the carpet just by gently rubbing it here. Then we’re going to apply some more.

Now, we’re going to want to let that sit for at least fifteen minutes. Once that’s done, we’re going to take our vacuum and we’re just going to vacuum it up. Then we’re going to take a simple mixture – this is one part white distilled vinegar, two parts water, and just a splash of dishwashing liquid – we’re going to apply that on the affected area. Once again, we’re going to get our cotton towel. We’re going to put that on there, and we’re going to blot again. What we’re looking for is color transfer. We want to see is anything still coming off onto the towel.

Once we see we’re no longer getting transfer, we’re going to take it and we’re just going to gently raise that carpet up. We’re going to take a dry cotton towel, we’re going to place that on the affected area, and then we want to take something that weighs about the equivalent of a gallon of water. We want to make sure this is a plastic container. We want to be sure we don’t use wood or metal. Wood or metal can both stain the carpet and create much more damage.

We leave that set roughly for at least an hour – let it absorb the rest of that liquid out of there. Once it’s done, we’re just going to pull that up, remove it, let it sit for twenty-four hours, run a vacuum over it, and that should take care of it.
