They seemed to be upfront and honest about the situation. We had just bought this home and the well situation was not the best it could be. It was actually pretty bad. For where it was and where it is at now, I could only rate them at a "10" plus.

Comparative Summary

Few water well contractors earn the prestigious Diamond Certified award, which means they’ve been independently rated Highest in Quality and Helpful Expertise. Even fewer can also claim almost 70 years in the industry, but that’s exactly the case for McLean & Williams, Inc. “We’ve been building this company on word of mouth since 1949,” says co-owner Sherry Salinas. “We do every job so the customer doesn’t have to think about who to call the next time they need someone to work on their well.”

McLean & Williams provides water well and pump services for residential, commercial, and agricultural clients throughout Napa County. The family-owned and operated company has the in-house capabilities to handle everything from water well drilling to pump installation and service.

Unlike less experienced water well companies that rely on other contractors to perform the actual drilling or maintenance, McLean & Williams has the training to handle every project from start to finish. “We do the drilling, maintenance and everything in between,” affirms Ms. Salinas. “Our clients know we’ll be with them every step of the way, and they really appreciate having that type of support.”

Another distinguishing feature of McLean & Williams is its ability to fabricate parts that are needed for certain jobs. “Whether it’s in our shop or in the field, we’re capable of making parts that fit any type of water well or pump equipment,” says co-owner Gonzalo Salinas. “In fact, we have a reputation in the Napa Valley for being able to handle situations that other companies won’t even try to tackle. Our wide range of equipment and vast amounts of industry experience allow us to complete any task that’s requested of us.”

Industry Info

When considering the location and design of a water well system, it’s important to recognize a few key factors.

Location accessibility
The first factor to consider when choosing a well location is accessibility. Due to the large equipment needed to drill and service a well, it’s important to choose a location where water can be found and large equipment can gain access with minimal property damage. Drilling a well requires a very large drill rig that’s about the size of a semi-truck (nearly 40 feet tall when fully mobilized). In addition, there are many pieces of equipment that are necessary to support drilling operations, as well as designated areas to contain drill cuttings, fluids and discharge water from the development process. Regarding system maintenance, pump trucks equipped with hydraulic hoists and multiple pieces of large support equipment are needed to help pump technicians perform system installation, repair, and maintenance for the life of the well. Therefore, identifying a location that can handle large vehicles and support equipment is a top priority.

Utility setbacks
The second factor you should consider is utility setbacks. This includes (but isn’t limited to) the distance to overhead/underground power and gas lines, water lines, and septic equipment. When designing and drilling your ideal well system, location of septic systems should be considered, as drilling a water well too close to any part of a septic system is against county regulations, which are in place to protect you and your neighbors from potential contamination. Another setback that should be considered is the distance between the well and power/water lines running the necessary pumps. Long distances between power and the well can increase system installation costs due to the increase in wire size and the possibility of larger pumps to perform the desired task. Your well contractor should advise you to choose a location that’s more cost-effective for installation and maintenance, as long as well yield isn’t being sacrificed.

Property lines and road setbacks
Many counties (Napa in particular) regulate the distance that a well can be from a property line and from the centerline of roadways. This is to ensure the water system is constructed on and stays within the intended property while leaving room for any road expansion or construction that may occur.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How will you pick the best location to drill a well on my property?
A: “Well location depends on many factors. Usually, property setbacks limit us to a drilling location that can accommodate all the equipment that’s necessary to construct a well. We also consider the proximity to utilities in an attempt to reduce the installation cost of the pumping system. On a larger parcel, our years of experience help us determine the location that has the highest probability of finding water by looking back on other wells we’ve constructed in that area.”

Q: How familiar are you with the water formations in my area?
A: “We’ve been drilling water wells in Napa since the 1940s, so we have all the necessary knowledge to determine well completion depths and potential yield based on other wells in the area.”

Q: Can you drill, install and maintain my water system?
A: “Yes, we pride ourselves on being a one-stop shop for water systems. We handle everything from the initial site meeting to the final installation. We also offer 24-hour water system service and well remediation such as cleaning and relining.”

Q: What should I expect when you drill my water well?
A: “Drilling a well can be a loud, messy process that generally lasts five to seven days. It takes a large drilling rig, several pieces of equipment, and support vehicles onsite to handle fluids and cuttings. Once the well is complete, we’ll clean up the site with an emphasis on minimal disturbance of the property.”

Q: Can you customize my water system to meet my needs?
A: “Yes. No two water systems get used exactly the same way. Our many years of experience have provided us with a wide range of abilities to dial systems so they function the way our clients desire.”

Q: What’s the difference between a conventional water system and a constant pressure system?
A: “A conventional water system requires control valves and, often, multiple pressure tanks. A constant pressure system fits into a much smaller footprint and maintains a system pressure with just a few pounds of fluctuation. Over the last 10 to 15 years, constant pressure systems have become the preferred system for the majority of our clients.”

Q: How do I maintain my water system?
A: “Water systems require very little maintenance. Often, the treatment equipment takes the most attention. Manufacturers of pressure tanks recommend checking the air charge on an annual basis. Storage tanks should be drained and cleaned every three to five years, depending on water quality. A water potability sample should also be drawn every few years to make sure the well is healthy.”

Q: How long do water system components normally last?
A: “On average, most large components of a water system, like pumps and motors, last 10 to 12 years, but many last much longer than that.”

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Shane Ragan

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Shane Ragan is a fifth-generation water well and pump professional and project manager at McLean & Williams, Inc., a Diamond Certified company. He can be reached at (707) 809-5945 or by email.

Shane Ragan: Tapping the Wellspring

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

NAPA — As a fifth-generation participant in his family’s well drilling and pump business, Shane Ragan is further deepening an already profound professional legacy. “I was pretty much raised in this company, which was started by my great-great grandfather in 1949,” he says. “My grandpa started paying me to clean up the shop when I was 11 and things progressed from there. By the time I was 15, I was running my own crew—I didn’t even have a driver’s license! After all these years, I’ve grown to love this work and appreciate being a part of my family’s legacy.”

Today, as project manager at McLean & Williams, Inc., Shane says his favorite part of his job is taking on unusual or challenging situations. “I like tackling problems that our competitors aren’t able to figure out or just don’t want to deal with. That probably gives me the most satisfaction—coming into a situation where people think the job can’t be done and making it happen.”

A resident of Napa (where he lives with his wife, Rachelle, and their kids, Alyssa and Andrew), Shane says it’s a perfect place for someone in his line of work. “Here in Napa, we have great weather and an environment that allows for a wide range of systems and applications. We do a lot of winery and vineyard work, but we also service a lot of residential homes, so there’s a lot of variety, which keeps things interesting.”

Outside of work, Shane spends his free time on a variety of active pastimes. “I enjoy anything sports-related, from football, baseball and basketball to golf and bowling,” he says. “I also like going to my kids’ sporting events and watching them play.” Additionally, Shane and his family like to get out and about in the Bay Area. “We do a lot of exploring and enjoy visiting nearby beaches and national parks. Vineyards are beautiful, but when you see them every day, it’s nice to get a change of scenery.” When he’s not playing sports or out exploring, Shane can often be found working in his garden at home.

In regard to his professional career, Shane embraces the charge of filling what he considers some sizeable shoes. “When you have customers who know your parents or knew your grandparents, it creates some high expectations,” he affirms. “There are even a few people who remember my great-grandpa and have stories of when he took care of them or got them out of a bind. I clearly have some pretty big shoes to fill, but I get a lot of satisfaction from meeting those high expectations and maintaining our company’s reputation for quality service.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Shane says he would expand the scope of his regional explorations. “I’d do some more traveling and see some more of the world. In particular, I’m partial to locations that involve beaches and sunshine, like the Caribbean. I really want to see Australia, so maybe I’d go there first.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite sports team?
A: The Oakland Raiders.

Q: What kind of music do you like?
A: Country.

Q: If you could time travel, would you go to the past or the future?
A: The future. It would be neat to experience events in the past, but I’d rather see something new and unknown.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
A: Chicken fried steak with gravy.

Q: What’s your favorite holiday?
A: Christmas—it has always been a big deal in my family.

  • Monitoring Your Groundwater System

NAPA — While groundwater systems require ongoing maintenance by a professional manager, property owners can also assist with maintenance by monitoring system performance. This primarily consists of paying attention to unusual developments such as a PG&E bill that’s higher than usual or a noticeable dip in water pressure or quality. Since any of these can be indicative of an underlying issue, it’s a good idea to have your groundwater system manager come out and take a look. This proactive step will help you catch problems early and prevent them from becoming full-blown.

Besides contacting your groundwater system manager when unusual conditions arise, it’s a good idea to schedule an annual service and inspection. This will give your manager a chance to service the filter and other system components, as well as inspect the condition of the water tanks and check the pressure. Having these measures performed each year will go a long way toward keeping your system operating smoothly and preventing problems from occurring down the road.

  • Video: Considerations for a Groundwater System

    Complete Video Transcription

NAPA — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re planning to install a groundwater system on your property, you’ll need to know what kind of maintenance it will require. Today we’re in Napa with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Shane Ragan of McLean & Williams to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Shane Ragan: When going down the path of owning and maintaining your own ground water systems, there’s many things to consider, such as maintenance and ongoing monitoring to make sure everything is working correctly. Many of the things to pay attention to from the homeowner the standpoint or from the system manager standpoint is to make sure that the system is providing good pressure, water is nice and clear and that you’re not using more electricity than what you’ve been able to pay attention to over the course of the life of the system.

A lot of those are indicators of issues that you need to contact your well water system contractor to come and see if there’s an issue that can corrected in hopes of trying to catch that early before having to incur larger repairs and issues like that. This goes for whether or not your system is used for inside the house, outside of the yard or even in your vineyard type applications. They all kind of have a lot of the same symptoms when they’re working correctly or incorrectly.
