Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for fence companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Meza’s Fence, the key to keeping clients happy is simple: provide consistently excellent work that stands the test of time. “We take a lot of pride in what we do, and it shows,” says President Juan Meza. “From using first-rate materials to thoroughly cleaning up at the end of each workday, everything we do makes us stand out.”

Meza’s Fence has been building and installing fences, gates, arbors, retaining walls, and other wood hardscape products for residential and commercial customers in Santa Clara, San Mateo, and Santa Cruz Counties since 2000. The family-owned and operated company uses high-quality lumber to ensure the longevity of its creations, and it also offers free estimates for its clients’ convenience.

Unlike less experienced fence contractors that take an “assembly line” approach to every job, Meza’s Fence takes the time to talk to its clients so it can provide results that meet their stylistic and practical needs. “Once we determine what a customer is looking for, we invite them to our shop where they can explore our huge inventory of wood,” says Mr. Meza. “We also have detailed photos of all the jobs we’ve done in the past, so they can see examples of finished products that they may want to replicate.”

Ultimately, Mr. Meza sees Meza’s Fence’s decades of experience as its most important attribute. “I’ve worked with some of the best fence contractors in the South Bay, and I started this business to give homeowners the security of working with a company that has a long-standing tradition of quality,” he says. “We truly love what we do, and we always look forward to working with our hands and creating something beautiful for our customers.”

Industry Info

Simply comparing prices for fence estimates may not be a good way to choose a contractor.

The bottom line is important—most of us have budgets, so getting price quotes from contractors before agreeing to hire them for home improvement projects is smart. However, just like so many other industries, a price estimate alone can’t tell you all the information you need to hire a fence contractor who can produce the results you’re looking for.

Juan Meza, president of Meza’s Fence in San Jose, says this is particularly true when it comes to wood fencing. “Consumers should definitely know about the quality of the redwood that’s being used. There’s a lot of cheap lumber out there, so it’s important to make sure you’re getting quality products.”

Your fence contractor should be willing to give you all the details of your job, including:

  • The type of lumber (redwood, Ipe, pine, etc.)
  • The grade of wood (you can verify this with the distributor)
  • The thickness of the individual boards
  • The exact height and width of each individual fence panel or section
  • How deep the posts will be set
  • Number and size details for posts, rails, pickets, gates, and hardware
  • The brand names of any manufactured parts
  • The name of the wood distributor
  • How long the estimate is valid

Contractors should also include information about staining, weatherproofing and any other specific details you want included (additional fees should be listed for those services). You may also want to ask about the installers, including their level of experience and whether they’re company employees or subcontractors.

Once you have this information, you’ll be able to compare the cost of the new fence and the quality of the installation each contractor offers. It should become clear that cheap bids usually don’t include the same quality of materials and labor as the more expensive bids. While you’ll need to choose the bid that best reflects your budget, keep in mind that higher-quality fences will last longer than cheaper ones, so you may be better off spending a little more upfront.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How quickly can you start my project?
A: We’re usually booked about a week in advance for estimates and about four weeks in advance for projects, which is pretty standard in this industry.

Q: Who does the installation and repair work?
A: Our team of in-house employees performs all the work. They’re each trained by the company owners, so you can expect the best quality.

Q: Can you help me decide which kind of fence is best for my needs?
A: Yes. You can come to our shop in San Jose or we can come to your home and show you samples and photos of your options.

Q: Do I need to be concerned about the type of wood I’m using to build my fence?
A: Not if you buy high-quality wood. Sometimes medium-grade wood can create problems, but we’ll look at your lumber before we install anything so there won’t be any surprises.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Julian Meza

Julian Meza: Fencing Pride

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN JOSE — When asked how he got into the fencing industry, Julian Meza says he was simply raised in it. “My father, Julian Sr., has been in the industry since the late ’80s. My brother, Juan Carlos, and I grew up going with him to jobsites and learning the trade. As we got older, he would send us to pick up lumber or have us handle smaller projects. In 2000, he founded Meza’s Fence, and we’ve been working here since the beginning.”

Today, as project manager of Meza’s Fence, Julian says his favorite part of his job is the variety. “With fencing, every day brings something different, which keeps things interesting. Plus, the Bay Area is a very diverse place, so you never know where you’re going to be or who’s home you’ll be working at.”

A resident of San Jose, Julian spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “I like lifting weights, hanging out with friends and cruising in my 2016 Camaro,” he details. “I also enjoy traveling—I try to take time off throughout the year just to get away and recharge my batteries.” Additionally, Julian says he enjoys educating himself. “I do a lot of random research, whether on work-related topics or just current events in the news. That way, when I’m talking with a friend or a client, I always have something to contribute to the conversation.”

In his life and professional career, Julian expresses his pride at being part of his family’s business venture. “My family has worked really hard during the last 20 years to get Meza’s Fence to where it is today,” he explains. “When we started, my dad was working out of an old 1975 pickup truck; today, we have an entire fleet of work vehicles. It’s very satisfying to see the progress we’ve made and enjoy that success together as a family. I feel motivated to work hard every day and give my all, because I know it’s not just me—it’s us.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Julian says he’d buy some beachside property. “I would probably move out of San Jose and go live somewhere by the beach. One thing’s for sure: I wouldn’t miss the traffic!”

Ask Me Anything!

  • Understanding Redwood Fencing Grades

SAN JOSE — Redwood is known for being one of the best natural wood fencing materials available. However, since it comes in varying grades of quality, it’s important to know exactly what you’re getting when you hire a fence builder. Here are some general facts about redwood grades:

    •  Grades designated as “heart” (example: Construction Heart) are sourced from the inner part of the tree, known as heartwood. Grades designated as “common” (example: Construction Common) are sourced from outer parts of the tree, known as sapwood. Most “common” grades contain a combination of heartwood and sapwood.

    •  In general, the higher a redwood’s grade, the fewer/smaller knots it will contain. Higher grades also tend to be more consistent in color.

Let’s look at a few examples of redwood grades:

    •  Construction Common consists largely of outer cuts (sapwood) of the tree. As a result, it tends to have more/larger knots that higher grades.

    •  B-Grade looks similar in color to Construction Common (with a tint that ranges from pinkish/reddish to gold) but only contains knots smaller than a dime in size.

    •  Construction Heart is on the high end of the quality spectrum. Consisting of inner cuts of the tree (heartwood), it has fewer knots and more consistent color than lower redwood grades.

Due to the complex variety of redwood grades, plan to discuss this with your fence contractor and make sure their proposal specifies the products to be used.

  • Video: Differentiating Redwood Fence Materials

    Complete Video Transcription

SAN JOSE — Host, Sarah Rutan: When planning to install a redwood fence, it’s important to realize that not all redwood is of the same quality. Today we’re in San Jose with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Julian Meza of Meza’s Fence to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Julian Meza: When selecting a redwood fence, we have three qualities to choose from. The first quality is going to be the construction common to outer cuts of the redwood tree, unique traits of it. It tends to be pink-ish, red-ish, gold-ish – some knots in the board as well. The next quality on as well, it’s called B Grade Select as well. B Grade Select has the same type of color tint to it, but it tends to be towards the red, white, pink-ish, gold-ish as well. The only thing, it tends to have fewer knots. Knots are not acceptable bigger than dime-size, so it’s almost a clear board. Next quality on up as well it tends to be the top of the line which is the Con Heart inner cut of the redwood tree. A huge myth is that it tends to be a bit more termite-resistant, completely all red in color. It does have knots, but the unique of it, it comes from really nice, old-growth redwoods.

Their pricing was more than fair. I had a small job that needed to be done, and of all the places I contacted, the only place that returned a call was Meza's. They didn't care about size of job. They still came and did it when no one else would.
