Julian Meza: Fencing Pride
By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter
SAN JOSE — When asked how he got into the fencing industry, Julian Meza says he was simply raised in it. “My father, Julian Sr., has been in the industry since the late ’80s. My brother, Juan Carlos, and I grew up going with him to jobsites and learning the trade. As we got older, he would send us to pick up lumber or have us handle smaller projects. In 2000, he founded Meza’s Fence, and we’ve been working here since the beginning.”
Today, as project manager of Meza’s Fence, Julian says his favorite part of his job is the variety. “With fencing, every day brings something different, which keeps things interesting. Plus, the Bay Area is a very diverse place, so you never know where you’re going to be or who’s home you’ll be working at.”
A resident of San Jose, Julian spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “I like lifting weights, hanging out with friends and cruising in my 2016 Camaro,” he details. “I also enjoy traveling—I try to take time off throughout the year just to get away and recharge my batteries.” Additionally, Julian says he enjoys educating himself. “I do a lot of random research, whether on work-related topics or just current events in the news. That way, when I’m talking with a friend or a client, I always have something to contribute to the conversation.”
In his life and professional career, Julian expresses his pride at being part of his family’s business venture. “My family has worked really hard during the last 20 years to get Meza’s Fence to where it is today,” he explains. “When we started, my dad was working out of an old 1975 pickup truck; today, we have an entire fleet of work vehicles. It’s very satisfying to see the progress we’ve made and enjoy that success together as a family. I feel motivated to work hard every day and give my all, because I know it’s not just me—it’s us.”
When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Julian says he’d buy some beachside property. “I would probably move out of San Jose and go live somewhere by the beach. One thing’s for sure: I wouldn’t miss the traffic!”
