If you want to add more privacy to your life, consider soundproofing your home. Your home should be your respite from everyday life, but loud neighbors, traffic sounds, and outdoor noises can interrupt your peace and make your environment less relaxing. Fortunately, there are soundproofing options that can keep your home quieter by blocking incoming sounds from the outside and other rooms. “Soundproofing is an up-and-coming service that more homeowners are asking for,” shares Mike Mayock, president of Michael B. Mayock Inc. dba A Complete Drywall Company in San Rafael. “People are catching on to the idea that they can install products that will improve room quietness and even eliminate unwanted sounds.”
Maybe you’ve tried using area rugs, carpeting, bookcases, or acoustic padding or tiles to deaden sounds and make your home quieter. These are fine choices to temporarily dampen noise, but for true soundproofing, you need to work with a contractor that understands the materials, products and installation methods that will get you the best results. Mr. Mayock says many soundproofing options are dependent on the homeowner’s preferred outcome. “If you want soundproofing added to walls, you can choose a double layer of QuietRock on top of the existing sheetrock. That will help limit sounds that enter and exit the room, but it won’t completely eliminate them.”
If you want complete soundproofing, you can opt to have a contractor pull your existing sheetrock and install soundproofing materials and QuietRock in the walls and ceilings. “This option will soundproof your home so you don’t get sound transfer between rooms or from the outside,” affirms Mr. Mayock. “You can also install noise barriers, acoustic wall panels, acoustic putty, and sound isolation clips for windows and doors.”
For complete soundproofing, Mr. Mayock recommends working with a sound engineer to put together a customized soundproofing package and then hiring a contractor to install it. If you want to soundproof walls so noise isn’t heard from room to room, there are many ready-made systems that can make a big difference.
