Comparative Summary

Few electrical contractors earn the prestigious Diamond Certified award, which means they’ve been independently rated Highest in Quality. Even fewer can also claim more than 30 years of industry experience and family members running key positions within the company, but that’s exactly the case for Reyff Electric, Inc.

Reyff Electric provides a full range of electrical services for residential, industrial and commercial clients in Marin, Sonoma, Solano and Napa Counties. For residential customers, the company installs electrical systems in new homes; maintains and upgrades existing electrical systems; sets up spas and hot tubs; upgrades panels and breakers; and installs attics, exhaust fans, motion detectors, flood lighting and more. On the commercial side, Reyff Electric offers its services to a wide variety of businesses and has developed a particular expertise for working on restaurant electrical systems. It also uses a boom truck to install and maintain parking lot lighting and exterior signs.

Unlike electrical contractors that emphasize the importance of workload volume over customer interaction, Reyff Electric believes in providing a personal touch on each of its jobs. “It’s common for our technicians to give their personal phone numbers to customers in case they have any questions or problems,” says Sales Executive Dustin Reyff. “Our goal is to be as responsive as possible and get the job done right the first time. If we can work through a problem on the phone and save the customer a service call, we’ll do it.”

Another distinguishing feature of Reyff Electric is its highly experienced field technicians, all of whom are either certified journeymen electricians or training to achieve that distinction. “Our technicians work in teams so they can check each other’s work and get the job done faster,” explains Mr. Reyff. “We evaluate them at least once a year to ensure their work meets our high standards. Their professionalism and dedication has been a big part of our success.”

Industry Info

Maintaining your electrical system is an important aspect of home ownership. Your home’s electrical system is simultaneously one of the most useful and potentially dangerous systems you encounter in your everyday life, so it’s important to know how to properly and safely make use of its components. To ensure your electrical system functions as efficiently as possible, consider the following tips:

Know how your outlets are wired. Understanding a little more about the outlets in your home can help you use them safely, conserve energy and troubleshoot potential problems. Most modern outlets come in pairs (known as a “duplex receptacle”) and are generally rated at 15 or 20 amps and 120 volts. It’s important to know your outlet’s rating: If you have to replace a receptacle, you should always install an exact duplicate.

Understand fuses. Fuses are safety measures designed to keep devices and appliances from drawing too much current from your electrical system, which can create a dangerous situation. When the current flowing through a fuse is greater than it was designed to withstand, the metal melts, interrupts the circuit and stops the flow of electricity. In this way, it acts like a kill switch. When a fuse blows, it needs to be replaced. For the sake of safety and proper functioning of your electrical system, always use an identical replacement for the blown fuse. The three basic types of fuses are plug, time-delay and cartridge. The wrong type won’t fit in place of the old fuse, but you also have to pay attention to the amp rating of the fuse being replaced. Never replace a fuse with one that bears a higher amp rating.

Conserve electricity. Routinely maintaining your appliances can go a long way toward reducing the amount of energy your family uses on a daily basis. For example, any device involved in the heating, cooling and ventilation of your home should be kept clean and in good repair. Make sure to regularly clean and replace heater and air conditioner filters. Keep the furnace room free of debris that can be sucked up into the fan. Clean ventilation ducts consistently to prevent them from becoming clogged. You can do a lot of these smaller tasks yourself, but you should always call a professional for larger maintenance tasks. The upfront expense may give you pause, but consider it an investment in your home and lowering your energy bills. You should also have your electrical system inspected on a regular basis so potential issues can be stopped before they become problematic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What’s your response time?

A: We always do our best to answer the phone, but if you don’t reach someone right away, we’ll call you back as soon as possible. For emergencies, we can usually make a service call that same day. For non-emergencies, we can schedule an appointment within the week.

Q: Are your technicians on time?

A: Yes. When we schedule an appointment, we’ll give a two-hour window and call 15 minutes before we arrive. If we think we’ll miss that window because of an earlier call taking longer than expected or heavy traffic, we’ll call and let you know.

Q: Do you provide free estimates?

A: Yes.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Will Phinney

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Will Phinney is operations manager of Reyff Electric, Inc., a Diamond Certified company since 2011. He can be reached at (415) 508-5638 or by email.

Will Phinney: From Brokering to Breakers

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

ROHNERT PARK — Formerly a real estate broker, Will Phinney moved into the electrical service field following the financial crisis of 2008. “I’ve known Ray Reyff, the owner of Reyff Electric, for over 20 years, so when the real estate market crashed, I came to work for him,” he explains. “Coming from a totally different field, it was initially a challenge to find my place here. I worked my way through the customer service, marketing and service departments before eventually moving to the administrative side. Today, as operations manager, I handle employee hiring and management, along with a lot of behind-the-scenes things that keep a business up and running.”

After 11 years at Reyff Electric, Inc., Will says his favorite part of his job is taking care of clients. “I enjoy being able to help the public with their electrical needs. When a customer is dealing with a tripped breaker or a beeping smoke alarm, it may be a small problem to us, but it’s a big deal to them, so it feels good to step in and be the hero who saves the day.”

A resident of Santa Rosa, Will spends the bulk of his time outside of work with his children. “I have a 20-year-old son, an 18-year-old daughter and a 13-year-old daughter,” he details. “As a single dad, I spend most of my free time with them. I take them to the beach, the movies…whatever it takes to engage them and keep them away from their phones!” When he’s not hanging out with his kids, Will enjoys spending time with friends and visiting Wine Country.

In regard to a professional philosophy, Will espouses the importance of treating employees not merely as workers but as people. “As a manager, I make an effort to come alongside our employees and meet them where they’re at,” he explains. “Everyone has good days and bad days, and everyone makes mistakes. Moreover, learning from your mistakes is a key part of growing and improving, so I try to communicate that. By taking the time to understand what an employee is going through or why they’re having an off day, I can gain some insight into how to help them overcome personal hurdles and be successful.”

  • Simple (But Impactful) Upgrades for Your Electrical System

ROHNERT PARK — Nowadays there are several electrical products and system add-ons that can improve functionality, energy efficiency, and safety in your home. What’s more, all of these products are affordable and easy to install, allowing you to reap numerous practical benefits for a modest investment. Here are a few examples:

    USB/HDMI receptacles

Over the last decade, more electrical devices require USB and HDMI ports for charging and use. Having USB and HDMI receptacles installed in your home will allow you to plug in your devices directly without the need for an adapter.

    Media panel

This recessed receptacle is designed to provide power to your TV, computer and/or sound system while minimizing the visual presence of cords. It also comes equipped with a surge protector and a reset button for restoring power after an outage.

    Timers

Timers provide an easy way to reduce energy waste in restrooms and other areas where the lights or fans can get left on. A timer can be set to switch off power within a span of anywhere from five minutes to four hours. You can also install timers for controlling your exterior lights and receptacles.

    Motion sensors

Similar to timers, motion sensors help minimize energy waste by triggering lights and fans to turn on or off depending on whether a room is occupied. There are also humidity sensors that can trigger bathroom fans to turn on when humidity levels rise.

    Dimmer switches

Whereas traditional light switches only have two settings (on and off), dimmer switches allow you to control variables like light level and ceiling fan speed. That way, you can always achieve a setting that makes you the most comfortable.

    Modern smoke detectors

In the last few years, smoke detector designs have been updated to improve safety. Instead of using 9-volt batteries, today’s smoke detectors come with built-in 10-year batteries, which rules out safety risks posed by missing or dead batteries.

    Smart home control hub

A great way to take advantage of modern wireless technology is to install a “smart” control hub in your home or office. Along with letting you monitor energy usage, this product allows you to control switches and other electrical system features via a smartphone or tablet.

  • 7 Common Electrical Panel Issues

ROHNERT PARK — Your main electrical panel is the control center of your home’s electrical system. Not only does this panel provide power to your home, it also protects you from hazards by shutting off the power when something goes wrong (commonly known as “tripping a breaker”). For these reasons, it’s important to confirm that your panel is functioning properly and address any outdated, worn-out or improperly installed components. Here are seven common issues to look for in your electrical panel:

    1. Double-lugged breakers
A double-lugged circuit breaker means there are two wires (circuits) going into a single breaker. This is an example of improper wiring, typically done as an attempt to fit wires where space is limited. When a breaker is double-lugged, it can result in over-feeding of the wires, which can cause the breaker to trip prematurely. In contrast, a panel that’s wired correctly will have a designated breaker for each individual wire.

    2. Incorrectly sized breakers/wires
Different sizes of electrical wires correspond to specific breaker sizes, so when wires and breakers are incorrectly matched, it can lead to problems. For example, installing a size 14 wire into a size 20 amp breaker may seem like a good way to gain some additional power, but this will actually cause the wire to break down and short out prematurely.

    3. Double-lugged neutral wires
Just as with double-lugged breakers, it’s common for neutral wires to be incorrectly paired up when space is limited. However, each individual wire should have its own space on the neutral bar. There are approved methods to create more space for neutral wires without resorting to double-lugging.

    4. Jumbled wiring
A sloppy wiring job doesn’t just look bad, it also makes it difficult for you or your electrician to identify which wires go where. To avoid this, wires should be secured with zip ties to maintain a neat appearance.

    5. Loose meter clamps
Behind your panel, you’ll find the meter jaws, which are exterior connectors that send electricity from the panel into your home. Over time, a panel’s meter jaws can become loose, which can lead to problems like overheating and arcing. If left unresolved, this issue will eventually lead to power loss.

    6. No Romex protection
Romex is a composite cable that consists of several electrical wires bundled together by a plastic sheathing. To preserve Romex cables, protection like bushings and connectors should be in place at the holes where the cables exit the panel. Since these holes in the panel’s metallic box can be sharp, this protection will prevent deterioration from abrasion over time.

    7. No grounding
Grounding is a crucial aspect of any modern electrical system. However, it’s not uncommon for electricians to find panels and wiring that were installed before grounding was required by code, so make sure your panel contains proper grounding.

  • Video: Products to Improve Your Electrical System

    Complete Video Transcription

ROHNERT PARK — Host, Sarah Rutan: Did you know there’s a variety of products that can improve the safety and functionality of your electrical system? To learn more, we’re in Rohnert Park with Ben Graves of Reyff Electric, speaking on behalf of Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Will Phinney.

Ben Graves: Today we’re going to go over some devices that may inspire you to change in your home, or even upgrade in your home to make your home safe and give you a better value for your product. With what you have here is you really want your products to work best for you. So, in here we have some items that can help you clean the clutter in your home. So, we have some USB devices over here, we have some HDMI devices there, where you can plug them into the wall so when you move, you can just remove the device instead. Some tamper-resistant receptacles, so your children are safe, so you’re not plugging in devices that are unwanted to the electrical plug itself.

We have a media panel here, this hides all of your cords behind the TV, or your computer, and also has a surge protector that protects your media equipment, so if there’s a surge or a spike in the system, it protects your equipment and an alarm will actually trigger an alarm and notify you that something has occurred, and there’s a reset button inside. Over here we have some USB plugs, if your children are constantly losing your charging port like mine, I always have children that are constantly losing my charging device, so you just plug it in to the USB directly. So, here’s a basic GFI, tamper-resistant – tamper-resistant is code, so you always have to have a tamper-resistant receptacle on your building and your product, or someone who’s installing those.

Over here we have a couple timer functions. For your restrooms, I recommend the device on the left, you have a five-minute to four-hour, so if you’re wanting to have a room be an exhaust with a fan, or if you have your children are constantly leaving lights on, put in a timer, save your energy bill, have these products work for you, not you work for your product. Then you have an exterior timer that we recommend, you can kind of set it and forget. You basically set it for astronomical time clock and it will constantly change with the timing of the seasons and always have your lights, or whatever you may have, Christmas lights or exterior lighting, turn on and off on their own.

Over here we have a motion sensor, which is good for restrooms and different occupancy levels, like, again if your kid’s always leaving the light on, put in a motion sensor and your lights will always shut off on a time frame. Over here we have a humidity sensor, it’s great for restrooms when they’re taking showers or whatnot, the humidity will be picked up by that device and turn off your fan. The end result is that these products start to save you money instead of you constantly wasting your money, so get these things automatic, which is the best thing for you. Here we have a couple displays of dimmer functions, a couple different types and styles. There’s many more to choose from, just here’s a few. There’s a fan and light combination switch, the great thing about this device is it fits into one switch. You don’t have two switches, you have one.

With the fire dangers that our Northern California, we recommend these smoke detectors, one’s a kiddie and the other one’s a first alert. A first alert is a a ten-year battery lifelong battery. This is a kiddie, also has a ten-year lifespan, so you really have to set it and forget it. And then also, if you want your home or your business to go wireless, if you like to control and see the function of what your usage may be, or if you like to control your products via off your Bluetooth phone or tablet, you can do that, you can make your entire home a Smart Home. We just simply install these products, this is a hub.

If you would also like to do a three-way switch, you have a hallway, restroom, bedroom these are remote switches, you can sync up to ten devices on this one switch. So, what this does is we have a hardwired dimmer that will talk to this. We sync them, instead of running wires throughout your home, we can just put in these wireless devices. Got some daylight sensors, and some motion sensors as well. So, these are some of the products that’ll help you, but we want your products to work best for you and not you work for your product.
