Company Philosophy

“We understand the importance of keeping long-term customers, so we work hard to exceed their expectations for pool and spa service. Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for swimming pool service companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Roger’s Pool & Spa Service Inc., the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: guarantee a high level of quality on every job and stand behind that guarantee at all times. “There are hundreds of pool service companies out there, but some of them are just guys with pick-up trucks and equipment who aren’t licensed and bonded, so they can’t offer any guarantees if something goes wrong,” says CEO John Pittman. “That’s where we separate ourselves–we always stand behind the quality of our work and do whatever it takes to keep our customers happy.”

Roger’s Pool & Spa Service has been maintaining and repairing pools, spas and related equipment for residential clients throughout the North Bay since 1972. The company has the capabilities to replace and install everything from pumps, filters and heaters to automatic pool cleaners, valves and pool covers, and it also sells products such as underwater lights, chemical pool cleaners and Little Giant fountains at its Sebastopol retail outlet.

Unlike less experienced pool companies that undervalue the importance of communicating with customers beyond their initial services, Roger’s Pool & Spa Service provides its customers with a direct line of communication that allows it to quickly respond to each question and complaint it receives. “We’re very responsive to our clients’ needs,” affirms Mr. Pittman. “If a customer isn’t satisfied or has a question about their pool, they know we’ll always be available to listen and respond accordingly.”

Another attribute that sets Roger’s Pool & Spa Service apart from its competition is its integrity in regard to the products it sells. “We only sell products that we can confidently guarantee,” explains Mr. Pittman. “It’s easy to buy pool products at a big box store, but those products aren’t backed with strong warranties. That’s why we only sell products made by reputable manufacturers that stand behind their work.”

Industry Info

Stay on top of filtration and sanitation to keep your swimming pool in the best possible condition. When it comes to keeping your swimming pool clean and comfortable, there’s nothing more important than having a working filtration system and making sure the water is sanitized and chemically balanced. “Whenever there’s a significant problem with a pool, it almost always comes down to either poor sanitation or inadequate filtration,” says John Pittman, CEO of Roger’s Pool & Spa Service Inc. in Sebastopol. “Some people try to cut down on filtering time to save money on their electricity bills, but this approach doesn’t work if you use your pool on a regular basis. If you want clean, healthy water in your pool, you have to be willing to spend the money to keep it maintained, which includes allowing it to filter for enough hours each day.”

The amount of time needed to filter a pool usually corresponds to how often the pool is being used. “California law requires commercial pools to run the filter every second they’re in use,” says Mr. Pittman. “The reason is that as long as there are people in the pool, organic matter is continually introduced to the water in the form of perspiration and other body oils. If you use your pool every day or you’re having a big pool party, you should run the filter constantly. If you don’t want to do that, at least let it run for about two hours afterward.”

Proper sanitation is another crucial component of keeping a clean pool. While many products can be used to sanitize a swimming pool, the most common by far is chlorine, which works by oxidizing any contaminants that enter the water. “Chlorine doesn’t make a distinction between algae and body oils; it simply oxidizes anything that’s organic,” explains Mr. Pittman. “It’ll start working as soon as someone gets in the pool, so if you’re having a big party, you need to use additional chlorine to make up for those extra contaminants.”

When it comes to sanitation, it’s not simply the presence of chemicals that’s important, but keeping the chemicals balanced as well. Swimming pools involve a lot more chemistry than you might think, which is why it’s a good idea to hire a professional pool service company to handle this aspect of maintenance. “The pH level is a crucial part of the chemistry of pool sanitation,” explains Mr. Pittman. “Basically, it’s a scale of 1 to 14 that measures the alkalinity or acidity of the water, with 7 being absolute neutral. If you have a chlorine count of 3 and a pH of 8, the effective chlorine in that water isn’t 3 because it’s measured at a half part per million. If, however, you simply lower the pH to 7.4, the effective chlorine will be 3. We can’t be perfectly neutral, so we always opt for between 7.4 and 7.6. It’s much better to be a little more alkaline than acidic, since acidic water that travels at high velocity is extremely disruptive to pumps, filters and heaters.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is the water in my pool green?

A: Green water is usually caused by a lapse in either sanitation or filtration. Your pool might not be filtering long enough, or it might have an inadequate amount of sanitizer or too much chlorine, which can offset its chemical stability. Another possibility is if your pool runs on well water—if there’s iron in the well, the water will change color when you add chlorine.

Q: Do I need to have my pool serviced during the winter?

A: Yes. The reason our maintenance service contracts are for 12 months is because even though you aren’t filtering as much, there are still leaves and debris that need to be cleaned up, as well as a balance of chemicals that we need to maintain.

Q: If I want to clean my pool myself, can you help me with the chemical aspects?

A: Yes. We provide a ‘chem check’ service, which includes checking your pool’s pH levels and making sure the water stays balanced. That’s a less expensive option than our full service, so it’s great if you’re on a budget.

Q: Can you analyze water samples?

A: Yes. You can bring a water sample to our Sebastopol facility and we’ll look at it free of charge. We’ll typically be able to tell if you need to add more of a certain chemical or increase your pool’s filtration.

Q: Can you perform pool inspections for real estate properties?

A: We do escrow inspections for many real estate companies in the area. We can’t inspect the integrity of the pool structure itself, but we can certainly give you a clear idea of what you have and ensure your heating and filtration systems are running properly.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM John Pittman

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • John Pittman is a 31-year veteran of the pool service industry and owner of Roger’s Pool & Spa Service, Inc., a Diamond Certified company since 2004. He can be reached at (707) 676-3984 or by email.

John Pittman: Swimming With the Tide

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SEBASTOPOL – Just prior to entering the swimming pool business, John Pittman found himself at a crossroads, both professionally and personally. “I was in between careers and had recently gone through a divorce, and I didn’t really know which direction to go next,” he remembers. A relatively recent Bay Area transplant, John had been provisionally working as a carpenter after spending more than a decade building yachts in Southern California. It wasn’t long, however, before a fateful meeting altered his course for good. “I met a fellow named Roger Shipley who owned a swimming pool maintenance business. We hit it off and became friends, and he actually hired me as a service technician. That was back in 1986. In 2001, Roger decided to retire, so I bought the business with another partner, and we’ve been running Roger’s Pool & Spa Service ever since.”

John grew up in the hills of Tennessee (“literally in a house with a dirt floor,” he says), but he’s spent the last three decades in Northern California, and he says he still has a deep appreciation for the aesthetic appeal of his adopted locale. “The Bay Area is a beautiful place to live and work, and I’ve really grown accustomed to the Mediterranean climate here.”

When he’s not working on pools and spas, John enjoys venturing out on extensive road trips with his wife, Donna, a retired school administrator and Sebastopol native. “So far, we’ve gone on three 7,500-plus mile trips in our class B motorhome,” he says. “My schedule isn’t as tight these days, so we like to seize the opportunity to just take off and explore America.” John also adheres to a strictly regimented golf routine. “Everybody who knows me knows I play golf on Thursdays,” he laughs.

Looking back on his life and career, John says one of the most valuable things he’s learned is to not get hung up on unresolvable issues. “I don’t spend a lot of time worrying about things I can’t change. Of course I try to resolve issues whenever possible, but experience has taught me that it’s pointless to dwell on things that are outside of my control. In some cases, it’s best to just let it go and move on.”

When asked what his retirement might look like, John says he’ll have to take a page from his wife’s book. “Donna is completely retired, but she still manages to stay busy all the time. I think it’ll have to be the same for me, because I’m the kind of person who always has to have something going on. Who knows—maybe I’ll take up painting!”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: Do you have a favorite sports team?
A: I’m a big fan of the Giants and 49ers.

Q: Did you play sports in high school?
A: I played football and basketball. In football, I was an offensive lineman.

Q: If you could time travel, would you go to the past or the future?
A: I would definitely go to the past. I’m an early American history enthusiast, and I’ve spent the last 27 years escorting eighth graders on trips to Washington, D.C., so I’d definitely be interested in going back to that period.

Q: What’s your favorite smell?
A: Vanilla

Q: Who makes you laugh?
A: Steve Martin.

Q: What’s your favorite fruit?
A: Cantaloupe.

  • Preparing your Pool for Summer

SEBASTOPOL — Following its winter dormancy, you’ll need to spend a little time getting your swimming pool ready for summer use. Preparing your pool primarily consists of two aspects: cleaning and sanitation.

    Cleaning
Use a vacuum and/or handheld net to remove stray leaves and any other debris that has accumulated in your pool during the winter. In addition to cleaning the pool itself, you should clean your filter by disassembling it and using a garden hose to wash off the individual parts. Keep in mind that once you start using your pool again, you’ll need to adjust your filter’s runtime from the offseason minimum to about eight hours a day.

    Sanitation
One of the main aspects of sanitation is obtaining a proper pH balance, which should fall between 7.2 and 7.4. You’ll also need to add chlorine—aim for a chlorine-to-water ratio of between 1.5 and 3 parts per million (ppm). A good way to determine if your pool’s chemical levels are correct is to take a water sample to your local pool supply store for testing (many stores provide this service for free). Once you have your pH and chlorine levels stabilized, all that’s left to do is enjoy your pool.

  • The Three C’s of Swimming Pool Maintenance

SEBASTOPOL — Proper swimming pool maintenance consists of three primary aspects, which is why it’s important to remember the “three C’s”: consistency, chlorine and cleaning.

    Consistency
Examine your pool at least once a week to make sure all systems are functioning properly. Taking a few minutes each week to check on things will go a long way toward preventing major issues.

    Chlorine
One of the most crucial aspects of pool maintenance is sanitation. As both a sanitizer and an oxidizer, chlorine offers the most cost-effective means of keeping your pool germ-free.

    Cleaning
To keep your swimming pool an enjoyable and relaxing place, it’s important to skim for fallen leaves and debris, clean the filter baskets, and perform other general upkeep on a regular basis.

  • The Pros and Cons of Salt
Water Chlorination

SEBASTOPOL − Most pool owners use chlorine to keep their pools germ-free, but many are also interested in alternative sanitation options such as ozone, ionizers and copper-based algaecides. The reality is, unlike chlorine—which acts as both a sanitizer and an oxidizer—most of these products have to be used in conjunction with another chemical component to provide an adequate level of sanitation in a pool.

The alternative option that most closely matches the effectiveness of traditional chlorine is salt water chlorination. While both modes involve the use of chlorine, the primary difference between them is in how the chlorine is produced and delivered to the pool. A salt water chlorination system produces chlorine by electrolysis, which occurs when sodium chloride attaches to electrical plates. As the sodium breaks down, chloride molecules are released into the water.

One of the primary benefits of salt water chlorination is its balanced distribution of chlorine. While manually adding chlorine to a pool can cause levels to spike, a salt chlorination system continuously delivers an even amount of chlorine to the pool. This prevents many of the unwelcome side effects of disproportionate chlorine levels, including overwhelming odors and eye or skin irritation.

One of the downsides of salt water chlorination is that salt is extremely corrosive and can damage a pool’s metallic components over time. However, since salt-chlorinated pools require relatively low levels of saline concentration, such damage usually results from extenuating factors such as improperly maintained pool chemistry or a malfunctioning system. As salt water chlorination continues to gain popularity as an alternative mode of sanitation, industry innovators look for new ways to minimize the potential for corrosion.

SEBASTOPOL — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you have in your backyard, you’ll need to know the three C’s of pool maintenance. Today we’re in Sebastopol with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, John Pittman of Rogers Pool & Spa Service to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, John Pittman: A clean swimming pool requires three things. I call it the three Cs: consistency, chlorine and cleaning. Consistency should be – check your pool once a week. Less than an hour each week and you will have a clean pool. Chlorine is what you need to sanitize the pool, it is the most cost effective and it’s the best sanitizer oxidizer. Then you finally have the cleaning back in the pool when needed, keep a clean filter, clean baskets and skimmers and you will have a clean swimming pool.
