Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for painting companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Solidarity Painting, Inc., the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is combining high-quality services with an unconditional five-year warranty that’s rarely seen in the industry. “Our ability to satisfy our customers has been a very important part of our success,” says owner Greg Kuzmicki. “Not only do we get the positive feeling of a job well done, but those people also tell their friends and neighbors and spread the word.”

Solidarity Painting, Inc. has been providing interior and exterior painting services for residential clients throughout the North Bay since 1990. In addition to painting all types of properties, the family-owned and operated company performs waterproofing and restoration work, repairs trim, removes popcorn ceiling and wallpaper, and more. For a complete list of services and to see photos of past products, potential customers can visit www.solidarityinc.com.

Unlike painting companies that hire inexperienced painters in an effort to save on operating costs, Solidarity Painting, Waterproofing & Restoration employs only highly trained painting professionals who have many years of experience working for Mr. Kuzmicki. “My crew members are all very skilled and share my goal of maintaining customer loyalty,” he says. “I trust them to do the job right the first time, and they never disappoint me.”

Another attribute that sets Solidarity Painting, Inc. apart from its competition is its ability to work on homes that are difficult to access, including properties on hillsides and cliffs that require sling stages in order to safely paint. “Most painting companies won’t take on these types of jobs, but that’s one of our specialties,” says Mr. Kuzmicki. “Also, we don’t have to call in another contractor if we find dry rot or other problems, which means we can complete projects without excessive delays.”

Industry Info

Make sure your painting contractor checks for dry rot before doing any work. Dry rot is typically caused when poor paint sealer or caulking allows water to seep into a wood surface. Once dry rot becomes prevalent in your home, the only solution is to remove and replace the rotted wood, which is why it’s so important to make sure your painting contractor has the proper knowledge and training to deal with the situation.

There’s no point to painting over dry rot, and a professional painter won’t do it if you ask, but a lot of painters only look at the surfaces to be painted and miss the dry rot entirely. “Make sure your painter fully primes all surfaces before painting and caulking them,” advises Greg Kuzmicki, owner of Solidarity Painting, Waterproofing & Restoration in Santa Rosa. “During the estimation process, your painter should check every area of your house—not only at eye level, but at lower and higher levels as well—and feel for soft spots that indicate dry rot. If dry rot is discovered, make sure the replacement is included in the estimate before work begins.”

When it comes to comparing estimates from different painters, Mr. Kuzmicki recommends taking an “apples to apples” approach. “Typically, the most expensive aspect of a painting project isn’t the paint itself, but rather the labor involved in applying the paint and preparing the surface,” he says. “As with anything, you get what you pay for in terms of thoroughness, attention to detail and workmanship.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much will my painting project cost?

A: It depends on a variety of factors, including the type and size of the area to be painted, the type of windows and other trim work, the amount and quality of the paint, the level of protection needed for plants and furniture, and the extent of the surface preparation. We’ll provide a detailed estimate that takes all these things into account before any work begins.

Q: How long will it take to paint my house?

A: The process can take as little as four to five days from the time you make the initial call, but it can take longer depending on the condition of your home, the type of work required and the weather conditions (for exterior jobs). We’ll give you an exact time estimate when we submit our bid.

Q: Will you complete my job without interruption?

A: Yes. Weather permitting, we will work every day until your project is completed.

Q: Can you pressure wash my house before painting it?

A: Absolutely. As part of our standard service, we pressure wash every house before we paint it.

Q: What kind of paint do you use?

A: We only use high-quality paints made by industry leaders like Dunn-Edwards, Kelly-Moore and Benjamin Moore. You can request a different brand, but those are our standard paints.

Q: Do you provide free estimates?

A: Yes.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Greg Kuzmicki

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Greg Kuzmicki: A Brush with Destiny

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SANTA ROSA – When Greg Kuzmicki first arrived in New York at the age of 13, his initial impressions of the United States weren’t exactly ideal. “Coming from Poland to Brooklyn, New York was a complete culture shock,” he recalls. “All I could think was, ‘Is this all there is?’” However, after visiting his brother in California a few years later, he found a far closer resemblance to the picture of America he’d originally painted in his mind. “The climate was so much better and the people were so much nicer! Thirty-five years later, I’m still enjoying life in the Bay Area.”

Greg has been involved in the painting industry his whole life—he started doing summer work when he was a teenager, and when he moved from the East Coast to California, his first full-time job was with a painting contractor in San Mateo. After working for three painting contractors in San Francisco and Marin over a 12-year span, he finally established his own company, Solidarity Painting, Inc., in 1990. Greg’s professional emphasis on quality was evident in Solidarity Painting’s ability to not only withstand but actually prosper during the economic downturn of 2008. “When many painting businesses were folding, we were actually expanding,” he says. “In 2009, we moved from a 1,000-square-foot shop to a 2,500-square-foot shop.”

After three-plus decades of living and working in the Bay Area, Greg’s initial appreciation of the climate and people hasn’t dwindled a bit. He also enjoys taking advantage of the activities offered by the local topography. “I love hiking, waterskiing and rock climbing,” he says. “One of my favorite things is going to Zion National Park and doing some free climbing. Climbing a couple hundred feet without ropes is quite a thrill—it’s almost the same as getting up on a 40-foot ladder to paint a house!” When he’s not scaling a ladder or a rock face, Greg enjoys spending time with his two children, 19-year-old Monica and 16-year-old Adam.

When asked to sum up his life and career, Greg says one particular quote stands out. “I’ve always said, ‘We are where we are because of the choices we make.’ When you do high-quality work, you can expect a certain amount of repeat clients, and I think the same applies in life. If you try to be a good person and live right, good things will come back your way.” Greg applies this motto to his daily life by sponsoring children in undeveloped counties and lending his time and expertise on goodwill missions to Mexico. Following retirement, he says he would like to do more charity work, both at home and abroad. “I’d love to visit some of the countries where I’ve sponsored kids. As an animal lover, I’d also like to volunteer at a local animal shelter.”

Q: How do you like your eggs?
A: Over easy.

Q: If you could travel to the past or the future, which would you choose?

  • How to Prevent and Repair Dry Rot

SANTA ROSA — Dry rot isn’t something most homeowners think about, but by the time you notice it in your home, you’ll wish you had. Dry rot damage can be extremely detrimental to a home’s structure and the removal and subsequent repairs can be very costly, which is why dry rot prevention is one of the most important things you can do to protect your home.

    First and second causes
The main instigator of any dry rot infestation is latent moisture, but there are numerous secondary causes that contribute to its development. One the most common is poor construction. When building a new home, some inexperienced contractors neglect to adequately prime and seal the edges of the siding panels. These structural lapses allow moisture to enter, which creates an ideal environment for dry rot to take root.

    Remove, repair, replace
Before taking preventative measures, it’s vital to remove any existing dry rot. This means locating all the problem areas in and around your home to ensure a complete eradication. Since dry rot is so detrimental to a home’s structure, removal often involves repairing and replacing things such as siding and window frames.

    Prevention
Once you have thoroughly removed every trace of dry rot and made the necessary repairs, it’s time to take preventative measures. The best prevention against dry rot is impermeability, so thoroughly prime and seal every gap and joint on your home’s exterior where moisture can penetrate. Before putting up new siding, make sure your panels are primed on all the edges, front and back. Be sure to use a high-quality caulking material for sealing. Don’t be fooled by gimmicks that attest to the longevity of a less expensive product—when it comes to protecting your home, only the best is good enough. By spending a little extra time and money on prevention, you can ensure your home will be safeguarded from dry rot.

  • Video: Identifying and Treating Dry Rot

    Complete Video Transcription

SANTA ROSA — Host, Sarah Rutan: Repairing dry rot can be costly. So, today we’re in Santa Rosa with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Greg Kuzmicki of Solidarity Painting to learn about how you can repair and prevent dry rot.

Expert Contributor, Greg Kuzmicki: Dry rot on a home is something you don’t really think about, but by the time you notice it, it can get very costly. When new home builders build homes, they don’t back prime the edges or the sides of the panels so you have a lot of water absorption, which causes dry rot down the road. You can see the example on here. This is a bay window and you can see how the water got absorbed into the siding and causes a lot of damage.

So, here is one more really good example of how the siding was not properly installed. It was never sealed, it was never primed so when you have raw wood over raw wood and the caulking breaks down, the water just absorbs and causes dry rot. So, before you put up new siding, you want to make sure your panels are primed on all the edges, the front and back. This will prevent this from happening – we pulled this away from a chimney, this was the bottom of the chimney, you can see how it’s all disintegrated.

So, once again, very important to locate all of the problem areas on your home. Number two, remove all the dry rot. Number three, prime all edges on new siding, backs, everything, really, really good. Then use a really good, high quality caulking material. Here’s an example of what you don’t want to use, even though it says 25 year, 35 year, 50 – it don’t make any difference, its all marketing. You do want to use something like this, its Side Winder and even though it’s made by the same brand, this is a very superior product and also this one here, it’s called Lifetime GE, it’s a urethane based, very high quality caulking material.

Host, Sarah Rutan: Thank you to our Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Greg Kuzmicki of Solidarity Painting. I’m Sarah Rutan.

Briefly, they charge, so your going to pay money, but the amount of work they do, surface prep, colors up and then second coat, you will be happy you spent it. Call them. You'll have to wait, but the wait will be well worth it.
