“We aspire to live up to our company slogan every day: the Home of Old-Fashioned Service. Our company is built on quality and professionalism. We believe customer care is our most important asset. It starts with a client’s initial call to our office—speaking to a real person rather than listening to recorded options—and extends to the field with our highly skilled sales staff, technicians, and installers. We work hard to determine our clients’ needs and optimize their comfort, and we look for the best ways for them to earn incentives and rebates.”

Comparative Summary

Few companies in the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) field earn the prestigious Diamond Certified award, which means they’ve been independently rated Highest in Quality. Even fewer have also been family-owned and operated for nearly five decades, but that’s exactly the case for Valley Heating, Cooling and Electrical. “When we purchased the company from its original owner, we knew it was important to uphold its original philosophy,” explains Cindy Faulkner, who owns the company with her husband, Jeff. “It was founded on family values, and we’re proud to have maintained those standards over the years.”

Valley Heating, Cooling and Electrical services and installs all brands of air conditioners, heat pumps, furnaces, fan coils, filtration, thermostats, fireplace inserts, blown in attic insulation, and tankless and standard water heaters for residential and commercial clients. The company also handles duct cleaning, dryer vent cleaning, and residential and light commercial electrical services, including panel upgrades; wiring and repair; and installation of lighting, fans and switches. In 2009, the company expanded its services to include sales and installation of solar photovoltaic systems.

Unlike HVAC companies that emphasize project volume over personalized customer interactions, Valley Heating, Cooling and Electrical is committed to providing exceptional customer service on every job, regardless of the size. “Our goal is to create long-term customers, so making each client happy is very important to us,” says Mrs. Faulkner. “Our field management staff constantly reviews our work and makes sure we follow the right policies. They also conduct weekly training sessions with our employees to ensure their work meets our high standards for quality.”

Valley Heating, Cooling and Electrical’s highly trained and experienced technicians utilize their wide range of skills to provide electrical services that other companies can’t, including electrical panel upgrades, recessed and security lighting, ceiling fans, dedicated circuits for spas, electrical code corrections, solar site evaluations and solar system installations. “Our installers can handle even the most difficult, high-tech systems,” confirms Mrs. Faulkner. “They work hard to determine our clients’ needs and optimize their comfort.”

Industry Info

Make sure you choose the right air filters for your HVAC system. Air filters are a vital part of every heating and cooling system, but many homeowners fail to realize the importance of regularly changing them. Since they’re not often a visible part of the system and slowly lose efficiency with no drastic changes, it can be easy to ignore them. However, there are many reasons to choose the right filters for your system and change them regularly.

Not all air filters are built to offer the same cleanliness and efficiency, and not all fit every system. “Standard disposable air filters are only about 5 percent efficient, but they keep the majority of harmful particles out of your system,” explains Cindy Faulkner, co-owner of Valley Heating, Cooling & Electrical in San Jose. “Then there are pleated filters, which are 40 percent efficient and filter out allergens. There are also washable electrostatic filters that can be up to 95 percent efficient. Ultimately, the type of air filter you choose should depend on your HVAC equipment requirements and comfort needs.”

Once you install the right filters for your HVAC system, it’s important to change them on a regular basis. Here’s why:

• Dirty filters are the primary cause of HVAC equipment failure. Once they become clogged with dust, dander and debris, they can seriously restrict air flow and make the system’s fans work harder to blow air. This can cause undue strain on the system and burn out the fan motor.
• Clogged filters make HVAC systems work harder to draw in clean air, which wastes energy and increases your monthly bill.
• Dirty filters eventually allow dirt particles to enter ducts and vents, which can increase the amount of dust in your home and aggravate allergies and asthma problems.

People with severe allergies or compromised immune systems may want to go a step further and choose electronic air filters in addition to the air filtration provided by their HVAC units. “Electronic filters can literally change a person’s life,” says Mrs. Faulkner. “They’re actually able to filter out cold viruses, and a few of the HEPA electronic cleaners will kill mold that can develop in air conditioning units.”

Most air filters last for about 90 days, but that depends on the quality of filter you choose, the efficiency and age of your system, how dirty your air is, and whether or not you have children or pets. If you live in a location with a higher pollen count or more dust, you may need to replace your filters more often.

You can replace most filters by yourself—they’re usually located next to your HVAC system’s air handler, which is the large box that houses the fan and motor. Most units have small, hinged covers that allow easy access to the filter. Simply slip out the old filter and replace it with a new one, taking care to not shake or disrupt the dust and debris on the old filter. If your system has multiple or oddly sized filters, consider hiring a professional to help you with the initial replacement. Many HVAC companies also offer annual maintenance plans that include periodic filter changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How often should I have my HVAC system professionally maintained?

A: Furnaces and air conditioning systems should be maintained every year. Ducts and dryer vents should be maintained every two to four years.

Q: Do I really need an efficient furnace and air conditioner?

A: Efficiency is definitely important when it comes to furnaces and air conditioners. In addition to being better for the environment and costing less to maintain, high-efficiency HVAC systems tend to be a lot quieter than regular systems.

Q: How big does my HVAC unit need to be?

A: It depends on your living situation and the square footage of your house. We can come out and do a heat load calculation, but most of the time we can provide an accurate estimate based on square footage.

Q: How long will it take to install my HVAC system?

A: Every job is different, so we’ll let you know how long it will take when we provide the estimate.

Q: How soon can you install my new HVAC system?

A: We can usually complete an installation within one week of the initial call, depending on what it involves. If you need service or an estimate, we can turn it around the next day.

Q: Will you keep my home clean during the installation?

A: Absolutely. If the job takes longer than one day, we’ll make sure everything is neat and clean for the next day. We’ll even haul away any removable items on the first day of work. At the end of every job, we do a thorough cleaning and haul away all the old equipment and debris.

Cindy Faulkner: A Natural Transition

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN JOSE — After 16 years as president of Valley Heating, Cooling, Electrical & Solar, Cindy Faulkner looks back on her accession to ownership as a natural transition. “For more than a decade prior, I was basically running an HVAC company for someone else, and there were many things I would’ve done differently if I were the owner,” she remembers. “After the company was sold, I felt it was time to strike out on my own, so when the opportunity arose to purchase Valley Heating, Cooling, Electrical and Solar, I jumped at it. The transition from employee to owner felt natural, not only because of my prior industry experience, but also because I came here knowing what I wanted to do.”

Originally from the Midwest, Cindy moved to the West Coast in 1990, where she found work as an installation coordinator for a local HVAC contractor. Later, she was promoted to company vice president, and soon after she met her husband, Jeff. “I actually hired him as a service manager,” she laughs. “We’re still working together—he oversees the technical side and I handle the operations. We make a great team!”

After three decades years living in San Jose, Cindy says she enjoys being part of the local business community, citing the local Rotary Club as a key connecting point. “Since I’m from out-of-state, getting involved with Rotary was the best thing I could’ve done. When I first came here, I didn’t have any local connections—now I feel like I have 450 friends! In addition to being beneficial from a networking standpoint, it feels great to be part of a club that gives so much back to the local community.”

When she’s not working, Cindy engages in a variety of activities, from skiing and boating at Lake Tahoe to wine tasting in the Napa Valley. Additionally, she and Jeff enjoy traveling. “My family is in Colorado and my best friend is in Orange County, so we make it a point to visit them regularly,” she says. “Also, my husband is a big racing fan, so we attend a lot of the major racing events, including the Indianapolis 500.”

In her life and career, Cindy espouses the value of positive thinking. “The quote I always tell everyone is, ‘Life is too short not to be happy.’ In addition to doing what you love, I think it’s important to keep a positive outlook, because it really affects everything and everyone around you.”

When asked the first thing she’d do if she could retire tomorrow, Cindy says she’d head straight to her lake house. “If I retired, I know I would have one,” she laughs. “That’s the goal. As soon as I’m able to buy a lake house, I’ll know I’ve made it and then I can retire.”

  • 3 Home Heating Options: Gas, Electric and Hybrid

SAN JOSE — With all the energy efficiency requirements and incentives coming out in California, many homeowners are reconsidering their energy usage, especially as it pertains to things like heating. Some are even making the switch from traditional gas heating to electric or hybrid heating systems. If you’re considering one of these options, make sure you get the information you need to make a good decision. Here’s some basic info about three home heating options.

    Gas heat

A gas-powered, forced air furnace is the traditional mode of heating a home. The main benefit a furnace offers is comfort, as the forced air gives you that warm, cozy feeling. The main drawback is it runs on natural gas, which produces carbon monoxide. Besides polluting the environment, this requires you to have your furnace maintained and inspected regularly for safety.

In terms of energy efficiency, today’s furnaces range from 80% to 99% efficiency. What does this mean? With an 80% efficient furnace, for example, 80% of the gas goes toward heating your home and the other 20% goes out your roof. At the end of the day, 100% of the cost comes out of your wallet, so it’s easy to see the advantage of a higher efficiency furnace.

    Electric heat

Electric heating systems run on heat pumps. Unlike a forced air heater, a heat pump doesn’t generate heat; rather, it collects heat from outside and transfers it into the home (sort of like a reverse air conditioner). In order for an electric heating system to make sense financially, it typically needs to be combined with solar power. A solar-powered heat pump system will allow you to heat your home at little to no cost. It’s also a cleaner way to heat your home, as it doesn’t introduce any natural gas into the atmosphere.

While electric heating may be affordable and clean, it does have a couple of drawbacks in the way of comfort. A heat pump will certainly heat your home, but it won’t give you that toasty feeling you get from a forced air furnace. Additionally, a heat pump needs to intermittently kick into defrost mode to remove frost from the outside coil, which requires the air conditioner to turn on for about 10 minutes. This usually happens in the morning, when the system first turns on for the day.

    Hybrid heat

Also known as a dual fuel system, a hybrid heating system offers the best of both worlds by utilizing either gas or electric heat depending on the outdoor temperature. You can set your gas furnace to turn on if the temperature goes below a certain threshold, which will give you that warm, cozy feeling. On warmer days, the system will utilize the heat pump to minimize energy consumption and air pollution. Thanks to this dual functionality, you won’t have to sacrifice comfort for energy efficiency or vice versa.

  • Benefits of a Ductless Mini-Split System

SAN JOSE — There’s a lot of talk about ductless mini-splits these days, and for good reason. While ductless systems have been around since 1959, they’ve only recently gained popular acceptance as an alternative to central heating and cooling.

Ductless mini-splits are powered by electricity and have both heating and cooling capabilities. A mini-split system consists of an outdoor condenser/compressor unit and individual units (usually wall-mounted) that are situated in each of the home’s rooms. Mini-splits don’t rely on air ducts to deliver conditioned air to the home; rather, the indoor and outdoor units are connected by copper tubing lines that circulate refrigerant between each unit’s coils.

Here are some of the benefits a ductless system offers:

    Custom climate control

Whereas a centralized HVAC system heats/cools the entire house to a uniform temperature, ductless mini-splits offer a customized approach to climate control by allowing you to adjust the temperature in individual rooms. Likewise, you have the option to heat or cool some rooms and not others, which can save you money on your energy bills.

    Improved energy efficiency

Since mini-splits don’t rely on ductwork (which is where the majority of heat loss or gain occurs in a ducted system), they can greatly reduce your home’s carbon footprint.

    Easy installation

Ductless mini-splits are a particularly good option for homes that don’t already have central heating and cooling, as they’re much easier to install. This also makes them a good heating and cooling solution for home additions.

    Low maintenance

If you use a ductless system, you’ll never have to clean your air ducts again.

  • How to Replace Your Thermostat

SAN JOSE — Whether your current thermostat is broken or you’re just ready to upgrade to a programmable model, replacing a thermostat is a cost-effective way to improve your home energy efficiency. Fortunately, thermostat replacement is something you can easily perform yourself. Here are some simple steps to follow:

    1. Determine which type of thermostat is compatible for your system. For instance, the most common type for a 24-volt system is a universal thermostat. However, this won’t work for baseboard heating, which is a different application.

    2. Turn off the power to your heating unit. Typically, there will be a switch located either on your furnace or on the wall next to the furnace.

    3. Remove your old thermostat from the wall, and pay attention to the color and configuration of the wires (i.e., R to red and W to white).

    4. Attach the new thermostat to the wall and reconnect the wires in the correct configuration.

    5. Put the cover on the thermostat and restore power to the furnace.

    6. Test the furnace to make sure it operates properly. If you have air conditioning, you should test that as well.

    7. Once you’ve determined that everything is working properly, you can program your new thermostat.

Throughout the process, it’s important to reference the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure both safety and correct installation.

SAN JOSE — Host, Sarah Rutan: In caring for your home’s HVAC system, its important to know how to install a new thermostat. Today, we’re in San Jose with Diamond Certified Expert Cindy Faulkner of Valley Heating, Cooling, Electrical and Solar to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Cindy Faulkner: If your thermostat is broken or you’re ready to upgrade, it’s fairly simple to replace it yourself. The first step would be to determine what thermostat is compatible for your system. The most common for a 24-volt system would be a universal thermostat. This will not work for baseboard heating; that’s a different application.

The second step would be to read the manufacturer’s instructions completely. Make sure that you’re very clear on that. Turn off the power to your heating unit next. There is a switch that’s either located on your furnace or on the wall next to the furnace that you can just flip off.

Next, you’re going to remove your old thermostat from the wall and you’re going to make a map of where the wires go. So, it’s going to be R to red and W to white. Make sure you make that clear because it’s going to be the same when you put the next one back on.

Completely remove it from the wall and then mount the new thermostat to the wall using your manufacturer’s instructions. Now you’re going to connect the wires back to your thermostat as per the map that you made and the color designation.

Once you’re done with that, you’re going to put the cover of the thermostat on and you’re going to restore power to the furnace by flipping that switch back on. Now to the last couple of steps, which are easy.

You’re going to want to test your furnace and make sure it operates properly, and if you have air-conditioning, you’re going to want to test that, too. Once you’ve determined that everything is working great, then you are pretty much done other than programing your thermostat. You can refer to the manufacturer’s instructions and set that up exactly how you prefer when it comes on, when it goes off, and so on.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Michael Ziegler

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Michael Ziegler is general manager of Valley Heating, Cooling, Electrical and Solar, a Diamond Certified company since 2005. He can be reached at (408) 827-8994 or by email.

Michael Ziegler: A Fascination with the Trade

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN JOSE — People get involved in the HVAC industry for a variety of reasons, from growing up in the family business to simply enjoying the work. For Michael Ziegler, his HVAC career started with a fascination for the scientific aspects of the trade. “I took a refrigeration class as a high school elective and it really piqued my interest in the HVAC field,” he explains. “I really enjoyed working with my hands and was amazed by how refrigeration worked, so I decided I wanted to pursue it as a career.” Later, after returning from a tour with the Navy, Michael furthered his industry education at trade school. After completing a year of training, he began working for an HVAC company in the East Bay.

Today, as general manager of Valley Heating, Cooling, Electrical and Solar, Michael says his favorite part of the job is the simple satisfaction derived from making customers happy. “I love the rewards I get from repairing air conditioning units and furnaces. When I see the happiness in a customer’s face when comfort has been restored to their home, it’s a great feeling.”

A resident of San Jose, Michael likes to take advantage of the many outdoor opportunities the local setting has to offer, especially when he’s with his two sons, Dylan and Austin. “My boys and I love outdoor activities, from hiking at Castle Rock to fishing at the local lakes. We’re also sports enthusiasts—every weekend we’re occupied with some kind of sporting event, whether it’s the boys’ leagues or A’s, Raiders and Sharks games.”

In regard to a personal philosophy, Michael finds inspiration in a phrase he appropriated from a Dunkin’ Donuts commercial. “Every morning when I wake up my boys, I say, ‘It’s time to get up and make the donuts,’” he laughs. “It may seem silly, but I’ve taken it to mean that it’s time to start the day and be productive, which is something I can apply both in my personal life and at work with my crew.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Michael says he’d gear up for a long road trip. “I would love to jump in an RV and just travel across the United States. I got to travel the world a bit when I was in the military, but I haven’t taken much time to see and enjoy this country, so that’s definitely what I’d do.”

  • Troubleshooting Your Air Conditioning Unit

SAN JOSE — If your air conditioning system doesn’t seem to be functioning properly, your first inclination may be to call a professional. However, in many instances, you may be able to identify and fix the issue yourself, which will save you the cost of an unnecessary service call.

When an air conditioner doesn’t seem to be operating at full strength or effectively cooling your home, you might assume it needs to be repaired. However, it’s possible that you’ve simply forgotten to set the thermostat to the “cool” setting or to a low enough temperature. Another factor that may affect the performance of your air conditioning unit is dirty or clogged components such as the filter or evaporator coil. Before calling a professional, clean these components and see if it makes a noticeable improvement.

Other times, an air conditioning unit may appear to not be working at all. In this instance, first make sure the unit is connected to power. Next, check your electrical circuit or fuse box to make sure the problem isn’t being caused by a tripped breaker or blown fuse. If there aren’t any power issues, it may be something more serious like a blown motor or compressor, in which case you’ll need professional assistance.

SAN JOSE — Host, Sarah Rutan: Before calling a professional, there are a few things that you can do to help diagnose your air conditioning system. Today, we’re in San Jose with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Michael Ziegler of Valley Heating, Cooling, Electrical and Solar to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Michael Ziegler: There’s three things you can check if you discover your AC is not working for you.

One is to make sure your thermostat is set in the cool position and your set temperature is below your indoor temperature.

The second thing to check is to locate your breaker and make sure it’s in an on position.

The last thing you want to check is your fuses. They’re located in a disconnect switch box near your air-conditioner. You can pull these out, take them to a local hardware store, and they’ll check them for you. You can always purchase them there also.

So, check your thermostat, make sure it’s set to cool, temperature is set below the indoor temperature. Make sure your breaker is in the on position. Check your fuses. And also check your filter and make sure you get yearly maintenance on your HVAC system.
