Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for water heater companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Water Heaters Only, Inc., satisfying customers starts with having a solid team of dedicated employees. “Besides being a family-owned business for almost 50 years, we have a very long staff tenure,” explains Marketing Director Yana Carpenter. “In fact, some of our field supervisors have been with us longer than some companies have been in business. Having a loyal team that’s invested in our success makes a big difference in the quality of the customer experience we provide.”

Water Heaters Only has been installing and repairing all types of water heaters (including tankless, electric and high-efficiency models) for residential and commercial clients in Solano County, Sacramento County, and the Greater Bay Area since 1968. The company has the in-house capabilities to solve most types of water heater issues, and its technicians are available 24/7 to handle emergency situations.

Unlike companies that spread themselves too thin by taking on a wide range of plumbing-related projects, Water Heaters Only draws upon its unique expertise to provide its clients with highly specialized service. “After exclusively working on water heaters for five decades, we have a level of expertise that’s unparalleled in the industry,” affirms Ms. Carpenter. “Besides the experience that comes from doing this day in and day out, our employees receive ongoing education on the latest innovations and changes in water heater technology, so they’re familiar with all the various products and plumbing codes.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Water Heaters Only is its round-the-clock responsiveness. “When a water heater fails, it’s almost always unexpected, which can be very inconvenient and frustrating,” says Ms. Carpenter. “That’s why we answer the phone 24/7, 365 days a year. Whether it’s two in the afternoon or two in the morning, we’ll be there to restore our customers’ hot water as quickly as possible.”

Industry Info

Due to changes in plumbing codes and technology, replacing your water heater may involve more than a simple swap.

“Water heaters have changed a lot over the last 15 years,” explains Yana Carpenter, marketing director at Water Heaters Only, Inc. in Grass Valley. “For example, new water heaters are being designed to comply with increased state and federal requirements for energy efficiency, safety, and air quality. Because of this, if you need to replace your water heater, there’s a good chance the new one will be a lot different than your old one, which can lead to complications.”

Ms. Carpenter says sizing is one of the most common problems that can result when replacing a water heater. “Because of the updated design, a lot of newer models are a bit wider than their predecessors, so if your water heater is located inside a closet, the new one may not fit. Another potential issue is ventilation. Since the burners on modern water heaters tend to be more sensitive to combustion air flow, there are some scenarios where ventilation needs to be improved to ensure safe and efficient performance.”

Due to these and other potential factors, Ms. Carpenter says water heater replacement should only be handled by a professional. “It’s really important to hire a qualified company that understands the new products and the code requirements for how they should be installed. Don’t try to do it yourself or have a handy friend do it for you—that can lead to an unsafe condition. Furthermore, if you decide to sell your house and the water heater isn’t installed to code, you could find yourself in a bind.”

While a professional’s expertise is crucial for replacing a conventional water heater, it’s even more critical when converting to a tankless water heater. “Tankless water heaters have very different power and ventilation requirements than conventional water heaters, and these need to be addressed at the time of replacement,” explains Ms. Carpenter. “We’ve had cases where we’ve gone out to service a tankless unit and found that none of the retrofit work was done correctly. This affects both functionality and safety, which is why converting to a tankless or high-efficiency water heater should only be done by a licensed professional who’s familiar with the technology and code requirements.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will my new water heater last?
A: Most water heaters last 10 years, depending on water quality and usage. Some fail after six years and some last up to 15 years, so it really depends on your situation.

Q: Should I get a tankless water heater for my home?
A: Tankless water heaters are a great option for some people, but they’re not right for every home. When a tankless water heater is sized and installed properly, it can free up space and provide enough hot water for the entire home. However, even though they’re more efficient at heating water, that doesn’t always translate to savings. If your hot water usage increases, it can actually negate the savings and upfront cost of the installation.

Q: Why is my water heater leaking?
A: If your water heater is leaking from the bottom, it’s usually because the internal tank is rusted and cracked. This happens when the glass coating wears off and the steel tank inside rusts away. Occasionally, a plumbing fitting will fail and a part on the water heater will need to be replaced. Water heaters can also leak when there’s excess pressure in the system and the safety valve opens to relieve the pressure. For this type of leak, the water will come out from a hose attached to the pipe.

Q: Why don’t I have hot water?
A: The pilot light on the water heater probably went out, which means the water heater can’t heat itself. This could be due to a faulty part or a small leak at the bottom of the tank. If you don’t feel comfortable relighting the pilot light yourself, we can send a technician to diagnose and fix the problem.

Q: Why is my water heater making a banging noise?
A: When sediment buildup hardens inside a water heater, the tank can make a loud, rumbling noise when the burner is on. It isn’t dangerous, but it is a sign that the water heater is working harder than usual and is on its way to failing.

Q: Do I really need to flush my water heater?
A: These days, most water heaters come with a self-cleaning dip tube that limits the amount of sediment that accumulates on the bottom of the tank. So, flushing your water heater isn’t as important as it used to be, but it’s still a good idea to drain a few gallons from the bottom of the tank once a year to help eliminate sediment buildup. If there’s hard water in your area, this is even more important.

Nic Ratel: Heating Up

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

CONCORD — Nic Ratel started working for Water Heaters Only, Inc. part-time during college, but once he decided to go full-time, his career began to heat up fast. “I started out working the late shift, answering customer calls and booking jobs,” he remembers. “At the time, I was studying graphic design and attending classes in the mornings. I actually had some plumbing experience—my father was a maintenance technician and I worked with him a lot throughout high school. At Water Heaters Only, I found that I enjoyed dealing with customers, and I eventually decided to join the company full-time. Over the past 11 years, I’ve worked my way up from answering phones to running the company’s entire Northern California operation.”

Today, Nic says his favorite part of his job is still interacting with customers. “I enjoy talking to people, hearing their stories and helping them with their water heater problems. I love it when I get a call from a customer who’s happy and excited about their experience with us—as a people-person, I find that very fulfilling.”

A resident of Sacramento, Nic spends his free time on a variety of pastimes, from working out to hanging out. “I’m an avid weightlifter,” he reveals. “I have a friend who’s a competitive bodybuilder and we work out together regularly. I also enjoy going four-wheeling, range shooting, and hanging out with friends and family.” Additionally, Nic likes to pursue his passion for music. “I love all kinds of music and play a few different instruments, including trombone, guitar and drums. I don’t play in a band or anything—it’s just something I do for fun on my own.”

In regard to his professional career, Nic espouses the importance of customer care. “Essentially, I try to treat every customer like family,” he explains. “Our technicians are trained to be personable and make sure customers are well taken care of. The goal is that by the end of each job, we’ve not only served a client, we’ve made a friend.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Nic says he’d take his first real vacation. “I’ve been working ever since I got my first work permit at the age of 12. I’ve never taken a real vacation—it’s always been just one or two days here and there. So, if I retired, I would take a week or two and go somewhere tropical, like the Caribbean.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: If you could immediately master a musical instrument, what would you choose?
A: Piano.

Q: What’s your favorite snack?
A: Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.

Q: Would you rather live in the city or the country?
A: I do appreciate the city, but if I had to choose, I’d probably pick the country. I grew up in Grass Valley, so I’m a country boy at heart.

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: Mementos from life experiences, like photos and concert tickets.

  • Two Considerations for Tankless Water Heaters

CONCORD — When selecting a new water heater, you may be interested to know if a tankless water heater would be a good fit for your home. While this depends on several factors, there are two basic considerations to look at right away.

    1. House size
Generally, tankless water heaters are better suited for smaller homes where there are fewer water fixtures and shorter distances for water to travel. Since tankless water heaters function “on demand,” longer water line distances mean longer unit run times, which leads to increased energy consumption. Additionally, long distances to fixtures results in a “cold water sandwich,” where the cold water in the pipe has to run out before the hot water can arrive. For these reasons, tankless water heaters typically won’t deliver optimal performance or energy savings in large houses.

    2. Maintenance needs
Not all plumbers are qualified to work on tankless water heaters, so it’s important to find a qualified technician in your area before you buy—otherwise, you may find yourself in a bind later. Additionally, tankless water heaters require yearly maintenance, such as flushing vinegar through the unit and cleaning the inlet filter. A tankless model can potentially lower your utility bills, but you’ll need to factor in this annual maintenance cost when calculating your savings.

  • Pros and Cons of Water Heater Design Changes

CONCORD — Water heaters have changed a lot over the years, especially in regard to their design. Many of the design changes have been implemented due to state and federal government mandates for improved safety and energy efficiency. As a result, today’s units are less susceptible to accidental hazards and can produce more hot water while burning less gas. Unfortunately, despite these improvements, modern changes in water heater design have also brought a couple of drawbacks.

One of the biggest drawbacks of modern water heater design is that the tanks have become more sensitive and are consequently more prone to premature failure. While standard water heaters used to have a life expectancy of more than 20 years, today’s models have a typical operating lifespan of 10 to 12 years. Another drawback of modern water heater design is that replacement parts are harder to come by and often more expensive. Parts availability varies depending on a unit’s model and serial number, which is something to keep in mind when choosing a new water heater.

Considering the benefits and drawbacks of modern water heater design, it’s a good idea to consult your local water heater technician before selecting a new water heater. By asking about energy efficiency, unit lifespan, maintenance requirements and parts availability, you’ll be able to make an educated decision.

CONCORD — Host, Sarah Rutan: Water heaters have changed a lot in recent years, bringing benefits in some respects and drawbacks in others. Today we’re in Concord with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Nic Ratel of Water Heaters Only to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Nic Ratel: One of the most common questions we get at Water Heaters Only is regarding pricing and why tanks have gotten so much more expensive. Throughout the years, the California and the federal government have stepped in and mandated changes for efficiency and safety. With these changes have come design changes that make parts harder to get. Parts availability depends on the model and serial number of the water heater.

Also, the efficiency laws have changed. The tanks are more efficient. So, they burn less gas and actually produce more hot water in most cases. The tanks have become more sensitive and prone to leakage sooner. They used to give you about 20 to 30 years of life. And nowadays they give you about 10 to 12.

  • Video: Tankless Water Heater Considerations

    Complete Video Transcription

CONCORD — Host, Sarah Rutan: Before installing a tankless water heater, make sure it’s the optimal option for your circumstances. Today we’re in Concord with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Nic Ratel of Water Heaters Only to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Nic Ratel: One of the most common calls we get at Water Heaters Only is regarding tankless water heaters, how much it will cost, and if it’s a good fit for the situation. Choosing where to place a tankless is key in its ability to thrive. Now, larger homes don’t necessarily get all the gas savings you will get if you put them in a smaller one. It depends on the number of bathrooms and the insulation requirements vary from job-to-job, city-to-city, and house-to-house.

And one thing that they don’t mention when you’re doing your research online is maintenance. Tankless water heaters require yearly maintenance to be performed, flushing vinegar throughout the unit, and cleaning an inlet filter. And they do save money on a yearly basis. However, the cost of the maintenance is typically offsetting to the savings that you will get.
