Savvy consumers always search for ways to save money, but sometimes they’re willing to splurge a little. Photo: Closet Factory, 2017

I’ll be the first to admit that I really like getting good deals and saving money, but like most of you, I also like to splurge on some things. Sometimes I find that saving money can actually mean spending more on a quality product that will last a long time. For example, during a kitchen remodel, I bought a faucet that was on sale and it failed in the first year. The second faucet I purchased was three times more expensive, and so far it has lasted seven years. I’m so happy that I decided to splurge for a quality product.

I’ve been asking my friends what they like to splurge on and they say they never cut corners on new computers, healthy foods, and help from professionals. One colleague looks for products that come with lifetime warranties so she’ll get replacements if anything goes wrong, even after 15 or 20 years. Some people say it’s smart to buy quality luggage, backpacks, kitchenware and shoes.

Speaking of quality shoes, that’s something I do splurge on. I’m not happy if my feet aren’t happy, so that’s a top priority for me. I’m also willing to spend good money on a great haircut, and I justify that by not spending too much on other personal care services. I’ve always thought that buying the best mattress you can afford is a good investment because quality sleep matters. And when it comes to chocolate, I prefer to spend my calories on high-quality candy from See’s and specialty chocolatiers rather than drug store-variety candy bars.

What I won’t splurge on is a high-end car with all the bells and whistles. I won’t pay full price for expensive designer clothes, and I would never pay top dollar for a first class airline ticket. But that’s me. What about you? What do you splurge on and why? I would love to hear from you—I’m @ASavvyConsumer on Twitter.
